The mutant son of Charles Xavier and mutant researcher Moira MacTaggert, David's mutation manifested itself the day after Charles Xavier had left his mother Moira. Unnable to control his growing mutant abilities, Moira was forced to contain her son until she found a way to stabilize him, he remained a vertual prisoner most of his young life and grew an intense hatred towards his father for abandoning him.
Years later his father Charles Xavier was visiting London with his X-Men when David sensed his presence, a day after his arrival David escaped Muir Isle by possessing peoples bodies and made it to the mainland.
The X-Men managed to track David down to a local fast food establishment. Wolverine was sent in to talk him out but instead was attacked and possessed by Proteus. Using Wolverines body, David attacked his father and the X-Men but was driven off by Colonel Braddock with the use of a "psi-grenade" causing David great pain. Curious to see the extent of Wolverines healing factor, David threw himself into oncoming traffic, leaving Wolverine's body he took a new one, Colonel Betsy Braddock, killing her partner Dai Thomas.
Proteus soon revealed himself to the X-Men and attacked them badly wounding Iceman in the process. He was eventually stopped with the combined efforts of Betsy Braddock and Colossus, who crushed both David and Betsy.
Proteus possessed vast psionic ability to manipulate and alter reality. Proteus existed in a state of pure psionic energy, and hence has no physical powers. He could take possession of human bodies that his energies eventually "burned out", destroying them as they did his own original body.
