The mutant known as Mastermind was recruited into the anti-human terrorist organization the Brotherhood of Mutants by Magneto. He, along with his teammates, kidnapped the U.S. Presidents daughter and held her at Croatia. There, he had his first confrontation with the X-Men who then freed her and defeated the Brotherhood.
Mastermind and the Brotherhood then aided the X-Men in escaping the Weapon X Program.
Although it is not clear if Mastermind left the Brotherhood of Mutants after Magneto’s supposedly death, he was seen again as part of it after Magneto was freed from Charles’ mind-blocks and resumed leadership of the Brotherhood. After Magneto’s ‘resurrection’, the Brotherhood performed once again acts of terrorism. Together with Rogue, Juggernaut, Toad, Hard-Drive and Vanisher, Mastermind blew up the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, killing hundreds of people. After the Ultimates tracked down the six of them, most of them were taken out by the Ultimates but Mastermind somehow escaped. (Ultimate War 1)
Mastermind was able to rejoin Magneto. Magneto, who had decided to destroy the rest of the world, sent Mastermind, Multiple Man and Sabretooth on a mission to steal all the art at The Louvre in Paris. While Multiple Man sent his dupes around the place, Mastermind kept the humans busy by creating an illusion in which the humans were attacked by wasps. (Ultimate X-Men 27)
