Doctor Moira MacTaggert is the head of a genetic research facility on Muir Isle which takes care of the unfortunate effects of being a mutant. Many years ago she met and fell in love with Charles Xavier, they married and had a son David, who would one day grow up to be the psionic monster known as Proteus.
After 15 years of marriage, Xavier left Moira to pursue his dream of peaceful co-existence between humans and mutants. The day after he left, his 12-year-old son David got his mutant powers, but Moira was forced to contain him.
Many years later, when Xavier was visiting London on his world tour, the 19-year-old David sensed his presence and escaped from his laboratory. Moira called Xavier immediately. With the combined efforts of Professor Xavier, the X-Men, Moira, Colonel Braddock and Agent Thomas they managed to track David's location to a local fast food establishment, there he was confronted by Wolverine who he then possessed and used his body to attack his friends.
Colonel Braddock managed to drive him out of Logan's mind and he escaped into hers, where he was eventually killed by Colossus. During David's funeral, Charles told Moira of his plans to disband the X-Men.
When the world found out that Charles Xavier had tricked them into believing that Magneto was dead, not only the X-Men but also Moira, doctor Knox and their patients of their Muir-Island facility had to relocate to a safe-house at the Glasgow Central Station in Scotland. (Ultimate War #2) Although Moira remained positive, time was becoming short as it became very difficult for them to find the necessary supply of medicin for the sick children. Meanwhile Nightcrawler, who was heading towards the Scottish safe-house, contacted her while he was being chased by the German police. In the end, Nightcrawler got captured and sent to Camp X-Factor on Cuba, where S.H.I.E.L.D.’s telepaths entered Nightcrawler’s mind and learned the addresses of all the safe-houses, including that of Moira. It is unknown if S.H.I.E.L.D. did capture Moira and the rest in Glasgow. She was, however, later on seen on a Parents-day at the Xavier-institute, where she found out that Betsy Braddock was still alive, although in another body. (Ultimate X-Men #27-32)
Moira MacTaggert may not be a mutant herself but she designed and built the prototype of Cerebro.
Her ex-husband Charles Xavier even describes her as being one of the world's best genetisists.
