Bobby Drake is the youngest and one of the last X-Men to join, Bobby was attacked by a group of mutant-hunting Sentinels, luckily the X-Men were on hand to help him, he was then sent with the other X-Men to help free thier newest recruit Wolverine from Wraith and the Weapon X Program. Iceman and the rest of the team were then sent to rescue the Presidents daughter who had been kidnapped by the Brotherhood of Mutants, being held in Croatia, the X-Men were ambushed by the Croatian military leaving fellow X-Man, Beast mortally wounded.
Bobby was one of the few X-Men present at the White House when Magneto and his army of re-programmed Sentinels attacked and laid waste to Washington D.C.. Iceman aided his teammates in destroying the Sentinel army and saving by-standers while Professor X and Wolverine defeated Magneto.
Bobby took a weekend off to spend time with his family and parents. During his time there he met a young girl whom he told everything to, him being a mutant, the Xavier Institute, everything, when he came back to the School, Xavier effectively wiped his and the young girls memories of these events.
Weeks later, Bobby and the X-Men were captured and forced to serve the Weapon X Program and had Neural Implants installed into their skulls to assure their obediance. They were eventually freed by the combined efforts of the Brotherhood of Mutants, they're teammate Wolverine and S.H.I.E.L.D..
In the following weeks Bobby developed a crush on his best friends girlfriend, Ororo Munroe. He accompanied the X-Men to London to help promote the Professor's new best-selling book. While there the X-Men were called to Muir Isle to help Moira MacTaggert track down her and Charles' insane son, Proteus.
They soon tracked Proteus to Germany who attacked the X-Men while in possession of Betsy Braddock. Bobby, too frightened to do anything, was only brought into the conflict when Proteus threatened Storms life. Iceman attacked but was badly wounded.
After Bobby’s parents were more or less forced by senator Andrew Border Turk, who paid for all of Bobby’s medical bills, Bobby’s parents filed a hundred-million-dollars lawsuit against Charles Xavier. Senator Turk wanted to close down the Xavier Institute and therefor Bobby had to publicly state how Charles brainwashed the X-Men to go on dangerous missions and how it scared him psychologically. And although his parents did not really want to force him into this position, they saw this compensation claim as a way for them to start over again elsewhere. Because ever since people found out that their son was a mutant, the Drakes faced one setback after the other. First, his father lost his job, then his mother’s friends started to avoid her or stopped talking to her completely and finally their porch and mailbox got vandalized on a daily basis. But on the day that Bobby had to make his false statement, Bobby refused and told the world that, although the X-Men are sent on dangerous missions which may kill them, that they only did it to help ordinary people and to eventually become superheroes. During his statement, Bobby stated that he did not want to help a senator close down a school, where they teach ideas that scared the senator. (Ultimate X-Men 21-24)
During the time that the X-Men had to go in hiding from both the Ultimates and Magneto, whose mental blocks placed by Charles were lifted by the Brotherhood’s psychics, Bobby and his parents were also on the run, but from the police. Even though Iceman wanted to help his friends, his father warned him that he would have his mother’s life on his hands if he did so. But in the end, Bobby could not abandon his friends and joined them in a fight against the Ultimates and S.H.I.E.L.D.. Thanks to Iceman, S.H.I.E.L.D.-equipment went dead just long enough for the X-Men to get away unnoticed, although they had to leave Charles behind. (Ultimate War 3-4)
After the X-Men escaped from S.H.I.E.L.D., they went in hiding again. Although they undertook missions against the Brotherhood of Mutants to convince the general public of their innocence, it did not change a thing. So the X-Men had to go after Magneto himself. In an attempt to locate Magneto, Marvel Girl, Shadowcat and Iceman went on a mission and broke in a S.H.I.E.L.D.-station, but discovered that S.H.I.E.L.D. had no clue either where Magneto was. It was only after they picked up Cyclops’ signal at Magneto’s Citadel that they were able to find him. Together with the rest of the X-Men, Iceman defeated Magneto. (Ultimate X-Men #26-32)
Iceman is able to lower his external and internal body temperature, thereby radiating intense cold. In addition, he can transform himself into ice at will and freeze any moisture in the air around him - thus generating slides, shields, bats and other objects. He is immune to sub-zero temperatures.
