Magneto was leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, who had given the original group of X-Men a lot of grief. Since then he has reformed, and when Xavier became too ill to lead the X-Men, Magneto took over.
His brutal methods caused great disagreement among the group and a few of the members left to create their own group X-Factor.
Recently Magneto and his X-men have been away on the Shi'ar home world, but they had just returned in time to help Havok and The Six in the fight against The Goblin Queen. Magneto and his X-Men were a big help in defeating the Goblin Queen, but was apparently killed by the newly reinstated S.H.I.E.L.D.. Instead he and the other X-Men were saved by their ally/enemy, Apocalypse, and taken to his Antarctic base. Magneto helped in fighting alongside the Six and Apocalypse to stop his former friend, Professor X. Xavier was defeated and Magneto and his X-Men have moved to their moon base.
Magneto has the mutant ability to control magnetism and other related electromagnetic forces.
