Gambit was adopted by Jean-Luc LeBeau, head of the Thieves Guild, based in New Orleans. Gambit became a thief and was at one time partnered by Bloodstorm, who during a conflict with the Horsemen of Apocalypse transformed Gambit into a vampire. On this mission Gambit and Bloodstorm kidnapped two children for Sinister, the boy was turned over to his employee but the Girl Gambit kept and brought up as his own. whom he named Raven.
As part of a peace pact between the Thieves Guild and their rivals, the Assassins Guild, a marriage was arranged between Gambit and Bella Donna Boudreaux, the daughter of the head of the Assassins. Peace was achieved between the two clans and the United Guilds of Thieves and Assassins was formed and Gambit became their leader.
Years later The Six came to New Orleans and crossed paths with the Guilds. One of their own members Julien, Gambit's brother-in-law, betrayed the Guilds to S.H.I.E.L.D. Bella Donna was killed by S.H.I.E.L.D. Espers and Raven was taken into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody, Gambit then joined the Six.
Recently Gambit was kidnapped by the Outacasts, who planned of killing Gambit by tying him to a cross and allowing the sunlight to turn him to dust. Gambit was saved by Bloodstorm, and given a Serum created by the holographic Henry McCoy which cured him and Bloodstorm of their blood craving and sunlight problems.
When Raven was brought back to Earth he abandoned his team mates to escape The Goblin Queen.
Gambit has the mutant ability to tap into the potential energy contained within an object and transform it into kinetic energy. When Gambit thus charges an object with kinetic energy and throws it at a target, the object releases this energy explosively on impact. He can transform into mist and control vermin, due to his vampiric nature.
