View Full Version : How about some ComiX-Fan gear?
distortion
May 14, 2002, 11:33 pm
i was thinking about this after noticing several threads about mainly the same thing, who we are, where we are, what we look like, etc. X-fans want to know each other, its obvious.
this culminated into a single thought.... T-Shirts!
now, this is strictly hypothetical, but, how many people here would put some cash down for an X-Fan T-Shirt? Help support the site both financially and via advertisment obviously. plus, we'd be able to spot each other in a crowd? so, how would you like an X-Fan T-Shirt?
(remember, this is strictly hypothetical, so don't get too excited... its just a curiousity question)

If it is possible to market the X-Fan logo (is there any conflict with Marvel branding?) the T-shirts, hats and mugs can be made to order. There is an online site, Cafe Press, that can help – http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/products/index.aspx - you can order the X-Fan logo on everything from hats to boxer shorts.
And even if you don't sell the items you can still make them (for a fee from Cafe Press) for your own use.
Just a thought.

Hey if XFan were up for it (I mean, he is the one who’d be responsible if Marvel were to get mad at this idea and start swinging the legal axe) I would love to get some XFan merchandize. A huge XFan mug would be very cool. Yeah, and a couple of T-shirts, a mouse pad....

Marvel cant do sh!t. They dont own the letter X, no matter how much they might want to. Putting the letter X with a hyphen and the word "fan" in no way violates marvel's copyright policies. In fact, if i'm not mistaken, eric owns the copyright/trademark/whatever to the X-fan name, encompassing not only the logo but the site content and any relation, etc, so forth.

I'd buy a T-Shirt or a short sleave button shirt with the X-Fan logo and possible web address, especially if it were to help keep the site alive.
My only thing is that it would have to be black or grey. I just don't wear many other colors.

X-Fan T-shirts, coffee mugs, antenna balls, and the like are things that are constantly in the back of my mind, and have been for years now.
But there's always one thing that's stopped me - money. I just don't have the dollars it takes to get things like the above made, as much as I'd absolutely love to. What better advertising is there than someone walking around wearing a t-shirt with your logo and address on it?!
That said, if anybody knows anywhere that would be willing to make X-Fan T-shirts etc to order, please get them to email me at xfan@ihug.com.au ASAP!

Well, the logo was created from the original X-Factor logo, so that could, in some circles, be seen as copyright infringement.
However, X-Fan has been online for almost six years now, and in all that time Marvel have never had a problem with my using the logo. In fact, they even printed it on the letters page of a recent issue of Wolverine!

logo/URL on the breast pocket, URL on back

Well currently I'm putting up shirts with just the logo/URL on the breast pocket. When I can get a good quality large version of the logo to whack on the back of the shirts, then I'll add that in. But for now, it's breast pocket only.
Eric J. Moreels
May 21, 2002, 04:39 am
Okay gang, now we come to the issue of prices.
The way CafePress work is that they have a set base price, which is what they get from any sales. Anything extra on top of that is the store owner's commission.
So, what would you be willing to pay for, say, a plain white t-shirt with the X-Fan logo/URL on the breast pocket?
strangerx
May 21, 2002, 04:41 am
Just checked out the shirts and they look great. I'll most likly be buying a grey one once I finally get around to getting my check cashed.
As for a price, I'd say just add 2/3/4 dollors to the price. I don't know what everyone else is thinking, but to me that seems reasonable. Maybe certain items you could add a bit more to.

Hey Eric,
Just a thought about the t-shirts. What if we had 'special' ones that said "X-Fan Staff" on it somewhere, like under the logo on the breast pocket or maybe a sleeve print; for Mods, Admins, Reviewers, etc... That might help lend a bit a credibility to us whenever we cover a convention.

here's what you do in that case. ok, you have the base X-Fan store, then create a new store for a new design, then when you link to it link with a comma inbetween store names like this http://www.cafepress.com/swirlunicorn,gryphon,knothair that way they all show up on one page. or you can make a front page of your own, but i am not HTML savvy enough to do that. :p

An idea how about X-Fan beach/bathing towels. If you lay them horizontally you could have the X-Fan logo enlarged and placed in the nub of it. And then the address and what not that you need at the bottom of the towel in black print, or can't you do that? If you do though, make the towels extra thick like the ones we stole from Florida, oh wait ... did I say that a bit to loud? :D

The quality of the merchandise was better than I thought it would be, the logos are inked into the fabric (no silly iron on sticker here- it looks like it will last) and don't look like they will wash off with the first cleaning in the dishwasher or when the fabric gets wet.

Glad you like the X-Fan Gear, Shazza! The products are from a company named CafePress.com, and it's they who provide the store. I provided the logos and such to be put on the various items.
And yes, X-Fan receives a percentage of each item sold. How much depends on the item - a clock will generate more revenue than a mousepad will, for example. But it's all good! :)

Are there any future plans for similar type items - but without the logo, necessarily? A big ol' yellow logo doesn't work for me, and I'm sure a few others. Maybe something like a faded, cropped screenshot of the home forum page?

Grrrrrrrr! Now I gotta spend money! Foul, evil beings!
Gotta have a couple of coffee mugs (overpriced) - and a t-shirt. I am grumpy that they're charging an extra three bucks for normal human sizes, whilst the midgits keep getting lower prices. (Good choice in brand, though. Hanes hold up very well.) Also am going to have to pop for a baseball cap - purely to solve the problem of being a Dodgers/Rockies/Braves fan. (What can I say? They're all doing terrific.)
(Side note to Eric: Lots of World Cup talk on the tube of late, mostly how it's airing "in the middle of the night". What? Sportscasters have never heard of VCRs? Anyhow, all the Spanish-language stations have great coverage, and even ESPN have made mention. Our media is sickeningly behind public interest in footie - although I think it will forever be called 'soccer' here. As for me, I mix in quite a bit of baseball news on my site - that's my addiction. If that ain't bad enough, my compatriot the 'Ubiqtorate Commander' knows even more about baseball than I do, and will be presenting a series of reviews of some of out great ballparks. Me too - but only of Dodger Stadium, my old stomping grounds and a place he fears to tread.Star Wars boards, Star Trek boards, Tolkien boards, X-Fan boards - every one has a sports subtext, and it's predominantly footie and baseball, to varying degrees. I mean - Juggernaut as catcher, blocking the plate? Quicksilver as pinch runner? The ideas are endless) -M.

Hey folks, don't forget that there's always new items being added to the store! And there's also always a special or two on, so head on over to the X-Fan Gear (http://www.cafepress.com/xfan) store and check out what's on offer!

I got my first order from X-world in the mail yesterday and I must say how happy I am (of course i put X-fan down as my reference). It was only a few back issues and a TPB, but it was stuff I needed and the shipping was fast, well packaged, and an overall very, VERY pleasent shopping experience. (wish I could say the same for some of my ebay transactions)
Highly reccomended!

Does anybody know if it's possible to get a Shirt, but except without the Back Logo?

Since this is ComiX-Fan now, will X-Fan merchandise be on clearance?

If there's enough demand for one, I can add it.

Items are made to order, so there's no left-over X-Fan stock to clear, sorry!

I still want my button up collared shirt! I only wear button ups (and no, polo/golf shirts dont count!)
They must let it be done one day!

Yeah I thought that was funny too! I wonder how much of a demand they’ll be for ComiXFan thongs. Of course, they do look pretty cool...

There might be some more ComiX-Fan art by Chris coming, but for now it's Captain Eric Xavier in a bumper car! ;-)
