First Appearance: Star Wars: Legacy #0 (June 2006 - cameo), Star Wars: Legacy #1 (June 2006 - fully)
Known Relatives: Astraal Vao (sister), unnamed parents (deceased)
Group Affiliation: New Jedi Order
Shado Vao is a male Twi’lek and an orphan. At a very young age, Shado and his twin sister Astraal were in a transport that crashed on the planet Vendaxa. The siblings survived, but their parents were killed. As orphans, they were taken in and cared for by the Imperial Mission, a charitable organization from the Galactic Empire. Shado was found to be Force-sensitive and was recruited into the New Jedi Order while Astraal, who could also use the Force, decided to stay with the Mission. The two Twi’leks kept in touch and promised to meet at the crash site on Vendaxa if there ever was an emergency. Shado became the Padawan of Kol Skywalker and was close friends with his master’s son Cade.
When the Dark Side group known as the One Sith launched a brazen attack on the Jedi Temple on Ossus, Shado and Cade fought their way to Kol Skywalker and Wolf Sazen. While Cade wanted to help fight off the Sith, Shado helped to get the younglings on the remaining Jedi shuttle. After Cade got Sazen onboard, Shado piloted the ship off the planet and were then pursued by Predator starfighters. When Cade’s Twintail fighter was destroyed while fighting the Predators, Shado presumed him to be dead and had to get the shuttle into hyperspace. <img src="http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/headshots/dh/yngshado.gif" align=right hspace=10 alt="Shado as a teen">
Seven years after the attack on Ossus, Shado, now a Jedi Knight, met with Wolf Sazen along with two other Jedi on Daluuj. He listened to Wolf’s plans to find Cade and reunite the Jedi until a small group of Sith attacked them. Shado and Wolf were the only survivors as they cut down their assailants. Tired of hiding after all these years, Vao agreed to help Wolf in his endeavour.
As the two Jedi had just begun their search, Shado received a call for help from Astraal. Shado and Wolf went to Vendaxa to rendezvous with his sister and Princess Marasiah Fel, and they arrived just in time to save Astraal from a ferocious acklay. They soon met her other companions that included the now-bounty hunter Cade Skywalker and encountered a Twi’lek Sith named Darth Talon. Talon attacked them twice, and in her second assault, Shado dueled with her and revealed that his lightsaber is double-bladed. The two fought until Shado and his allies escaped onboard Cade’s ship, the Mynock and fled from Vendaxa. Once Princess Sia was returned to Roan Fel, Cade dropped off Shado and Wolf on the space station known as the Wheel.
Shado Vao and Master Sazen soon caught up with Cade at the desolate Jedi Temple on Ossus. They also met the Whiphid Jedi Master K’Kruhk there and helped Cade resume his Jedi training. A couple of weeks later, while Shado and Cade practiced various Force techniques on each other, they fell into a lower level of the temple and found not only some Jedi artifacts, but also a pair of Yuuzhan Vong warriors. Shado and Cade fought them until Nei Rin, the two Vongs’ leader and a friend of Shado’s deceased master, called them off. Afterwards, when Cade had a vision and left to find Hosk Trey’lis, Shado stayed with the others and confided to K’Kruhk that Cade’s careless lifestyle was always present, even before the massacre at Ossus. The Twi’lek vowed to put an end to Skywalker should he completely cross over to the Dark Side of the Force.
Some time after Cade’s departure, Shado, his fellow Jedi and the three Yuuzhan Vong hid beneath the Ossus temple as an Imperial patrol had arrived. When a pair of stormtroopers found the Jedi, Shado used a mind trick to make them believe that no one was there. Though the patrols soon stopped, Shado and his comrades faced another danger as Darth Stryfe had the temple obliterated from orbit. K’Kruhk saved them from being buried, but took injuries while doing so. The Whiphid mentioned to them of a secret Jedi refuge on Taivas, and Shado and Wolf brought K’Kruhk there for aid.
Later on Taivas, Shado and Wolf met with Cade and his crew, along with Princess Fel’s delegation, who secretly followed Cade. Following Cade and Sia’s meeting with the Jedi Council, Shado confronted his old friend about his dealings with the Dark Side. Cade responded by showing Vao the deadlier side of his healing abilities, but spared him to show that he still had control over himself. Shado would join Cade on his quest to destroy Darth Krayt, but mainly to keep an eye on Skywalker.
