Born on Tatooine, A’Sharad Hett is the son of Sharad Hett, a famous human Jedi in his own time. He was born after Sharad joined a tribe of Sand People, also known as Tusken Raiders. A’Sharad was raised by his father and the Sand People, and his mother died in a sandstorm while he was still an infant. Growing up, young Hett proved to be Force-sensitive and Sharad taught him what he had known before he had left the Jedi Order.
The crime lord known as Jabba the Hutt had started a war with the Tusken Raiders. A’Sharad, now a young adult joined his father’s tribe in their retaliation against Jabba’s forces and whatever other allies the Hutt had. The Hetts’ tribes soon met up with the Jedi Council Member Ki-Adi-Mundi, who had been looking for Sharad. With Ki’s help, the Tusken Raiders gained the upper hand in a battle with Gardulla the Hutt’s mercenaries. The tide would turn against A’Sharad and his people when Jabba’s army came to rescue Gardulla, and Sharad was killed by the bounty hunter Aurra Sing. The Tuskens were lost and scattered, but A’Sharad found a new home with the Jedi, and became Ki-Adi-Mundi's Padawan. With the order, he continued his Force training, and would use both his lightsaber and that of Sharad’s. Hett also learned that Tuskens and humans could not interbreed, realizing that his mother was human and not a Tusken as he always thought she was. In keeping to his Tusken roots, he continued to wear their customary headpiece.
Later, after helping his fellow Jedi on Malastare, Hett joined Ki-Adi-Mundi and Adi Gallia to find and capture Aurra Sing, who had recently killed more Jedi. During their search, their starship was destroyed by Sing, but the three Jedi were rescued by the Quarren senator Tikkes. The senator took them to a temperate world to continue his own agenda, and there they met with the Jedi Master, the Dark Woman. As Ki and Adi went to help the Dark Woman with Aurra, Hett was left behind to protect Tikkes. Sing soon made her way to the senator and Hett fought his father’s killer. He defeated her, but gave in to his anger to do so. A’Sharad felt ashamed about this and, fearing the Dark Side, intended to the leave the Jedi for Tatooine. The Dark Woman convinced him to stay, with her as his new master. Under the Dark Woman’s guidance, A’Sharad Hett became a Jedi Knight. He later had his own Padawan, a Nikto named Bhat Jul.
As the Clone Wars broke out, A’Sharad became a general in the Republic’s new military and fought against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, better known as the Separatists. Over a year into the war, A’Sharad and Bhat were among the Republic forces fighting the Separatists on the desert planet Aargonar. Baht died in the battle that separated Hett and fellow Jedi Anakin Skywalker from their army and A’Sharad had to endure Anakin’s resentment towards the Sand People during their trek. Entering the Separatist camp, Anakin lashed out against the enemy there in a blind rage, picturing them as Tuskens. Hett was also attacked by Skywalker, who confessed to have wiped out the Tusken tribe that killed his mother. A’Sharad was able to subdue Anakin and calmed him down by removing his Tusken headgear, revealing the truth behind his parentage. Once they had made peace and helped to defeat the Separatists on Aargonar, Hett kept what Skywalker had done on Tatooine a secret, believing that he will admit his wrongdoing eventually.
Near the end of the Clone Wars, A’Sharad took part in the Siege of Saleucami, which lasted for months. The Republic would win on Saleucami, but took many casualties, including Hett’s close friend Xiaan Amersu. At the war’s end, Order 66 was given, and the clone troopers turned against the Jedi. Hett killed the clones that were with him and believed that he was the last living Jedi. He returned to Tatooine and led several Tusken clans in retaking their lands. One of these areas was the Lars homestead, which was under the protection of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hett dueled with Kenobi, but was defeated and lost his right arm. Abandoned by the Tuskens for this, Hett yield to Obi-Wan’s demands to leave Tatooine forever.
Hett later got an artificial arm and started a life as a bounty hunter. Tracking and killing a target on the Sith tombworld of Korriban, he heard a voice calling him deep within the tombs. A’Sharad found and accessed the holocron of Xoxaan, one of the most ancient of Sith Lords. Under her spirit’s tutelage, Hett spent decades learning to master the Dark Side of the Force. When he left Korriban afterwards, A’Sharad was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong prior to their invasion of the galaxy. The Vong both tortured Hett and modified his body, replacing his left eye and artificial arm with biological constructs. He also met Vergere and from his conversations with her, he had a vision of himself leading a new breed of Sith to create a new order to the galaxy. Hett escaped from the Vong and returned to Korriban to make his vision a reality. He renamed himself Darth Krayt, after the dragons of his homeworld, and created his new order of many Sith as one, abolishing the Rule of Two. Over the century of remaking the Sith, Krayt would periodically go into stasis to stay alive, and to hold off the coral seeds the Yuuzhan Vong infected him with.
Krayt’s Sith started to take the galaxy by first sabotaging the Jedi’s Ossus Project, which led to the Sith-Imperial War. The Sith allied with the Galactic Empire to defeat both the Galactic Alliance and the New Jedi Order. After most the Alliance surrendered and the Jedi were scattered, Krayt usurped the Imperial throne from Roan Fel and became the new Emperor. His body still ravaged by the spores, Krayt sensed a Jedi using extraordinary healing powers at the massacre on Ossus. He wanted this Jedi found, as well as Roan Fel, who would oppose his rule. Krayt also had the Jedi temple on Coruscant remade for his Sith.
Seven years after becoming Emperor, Krayt sent Darth Talon after Roan’s daughter Marasiah in hopes of drawing him out. Though Talon failed her task, Krayt learned anyway that Roan is on the fortified world of Bastion, and Cade Skywalker is the healer he’s been looking for. Cade was eventually captured by the Sith, and Krayt coerced him to join his order. The Sith Lord and Darth Talon would teach Cade about the Dark Side until Cade made a second attempt to rescue the captive Jedi Hosk Trey’lis. Krayt tried to make Skywalker kill Hosk, but did it himself when Cade refused. After Cade defeated Darth Nihl and Talon, he and Krayt did battle until he escaped the Sith Temple.
During the fight between Darth Krayt and Cade Skywalker, remnants of the Galactic Alliance stole a prototype Star Destroyer from the Imperial shipyards at Dac. This theft fueled Krayt’s rage that had started with Cade’s escape. For the ship’s loss, the Dark Lord ordered to have ten percent of the Mon Calamari people exterminated, and the rest put in camps where they would be worked to extinction.
