Our non-descript hero says goodbye to his girlfriend as she boards a bus out of town. He is upset that she has to take a bus instead of a plane because of his low-paying job. On his way home, he stops in to visit little Bobby in the hospital who has been in a coma for over three months. He sits to talk to Bobby, telling him that he may soon get a promotion and with the extra money Bobby may finally get the operation he needs. After leaving the hospital he is mugged, but he is left with just enough money to take the subway home.

Angry and disappointed, he regrets simply handing over his money and not fighting back. He wishes he could get back at everyone who has been giving him a hard time, and in his anger he smashes a treasured Three Mile Island snow-globe from his paperweight collection on the floor.

That night as his collection of odds and ends sits on quietly on his desk glowing in the darkness. The glow-in-the-dark collection has been slowly changing our hero's genetic make-up for years, but the smashed object accelerates the transformation. His body begins to make strange popping sounds in the night and when he investigating he finds that the popping is new muscles instantly developing all over his body. His hair has also turned white.

The next morning his parents are too wrapped up in their own worlds to notice his physical changes. He discovers that he has gained new powers as he is able to read the small print on a cereal box from across the room. When leaving the house he accidentally rips the screen door off its hinges with new enhanced strength. He also finds that although he has missed his bus, but easily catches up to it despite its speed.

His boss is impressed by his physical changes, but rival co-worker Parsons simply believes that it is a ploy to get the promotion they are both after. His new appearance is also noticed by the office flirt Emily Carstairs, who comes on to him but he wants nothing to do with her. He decides that he must use his abilities as a super-hero and plans to go buy a costume.

Elsewhere, Mr. Parker has decided to kick out his noisy tenant Sanderson, but is surprised when he finds Sanderson wearing a bizarre costume and helmet. Sanderson's helmet removes Parker's confidence and forces him to abandon his plans to evict his tenant. Pleased with the success of his inventions, Sanderson decides to use his helmet for crime.

Our would-be hero admires the costumes at Super Hero Suits of Flushing and decides to settle on an economically priced bland, all white costume due to his low funds. That night he suits up and heads out into the city. He manages to stop a mugging, but then must confront their leader Sanderson. He is no match for the Sanderson’s confidence-sapping helmet and is beaten into unconsciousness.

The next day is like any other at work, but once evening comes our Generic Super-Hero paints a football helmet white to match his costume for added protection. He finds Sanderson and his thugs and manages to defeat them all this time. Sanderson's confidence stealing helmet did not work because the football helmet had been fitted with an audio cassette repeating the phrase "You can do it, you can defeat this guy."

The next morning at the boss at the office is arrested. Apparently he had been behind Sanderson's attempt at robbery, planning to cover up his recent embezzlement of company funds. His rival Parsons assumes the boss' position.
