At exactly the same moment, forty-three extraordinary children were born to single mothers all around the world. None of the mothers had shown any signs of pregnancy up to their unexplainable birth. The children that managed to survive were either abandoned or put up for adoption. Millionaire scientist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, also known as the Monocle, tracked down and adopted as many of these children as he could. He was only able to find seven. When he was asked why he adopted these children, he simply replied "To save the world," but from 'what' exactly he would not answer. This was the last anyone would see Sir Reginald and the children for ten years.
Quite suddenly, the Eiffel Tower began throwing people to their death. The police, unsure of what to do about this, received assistance from five masked children in school uniforms. The girl, refered to only as Number Three, dispersed the crowed and they all began to slowly rise into the air. At that moment, the tower attacked the children with a blast of green energy.
Flying high above the city, the Monocle watched events unfold far below. With him was watching another small girl known as Number Seven who had not been permitted to join the others as she had not special tallents like the others. Of their number, Number five was still unaccounted for. The Monocle could not be sure of his whereabouts, and actually did not care. He tells Number Seven to go practice her violin.
The children continued to battle the hostile steel construction. Number Four almost fell from the dizzying height but was saved by a tentacle projected from the abdomen of Number Six. Number Four attempted to contact the spirit of the engineer of the Eiffel Tower for help, but an impatient Number One struck the tower with a mighty punch, toppling it to the ground.
Inside the tower the children discovered a Zombie-Robot Gustave Eiffel, the original architect and engineer of the famous landmark. Reacting quickly, Number Two killed Eiffel with a well thrown knife to the head, but he reacted too quickly. The tower began a launch sequence, blasting off into space.
Having saved Paris, the children were warded the key to the city and free ice cream, but the Monocle noticed Number One lost in thought. He explained that wanted to go to space one day. The Monocle assured him that one day he would.
Twenty years later, Spaceboy (previously known as Number One and now in the body of a gorilla), receives an urgent call from the Monocle to return to Earth from the Moon. Back on Earth, Number Seven is woken by the telephone. She does not know who the bold caller is, but he asks her to audition for fist violin in his suite. She asks why she would be interested in doing so, but the caller tells her it would be for revenge.
Spaceboy lands at the Umbrella Academy, home of Sir Reginald, and enters the mansion. Inside Doctor Pogo, a talking chimpanzee informs Spaceboy that Reginald Hargreeves is dead, but he is also shock to find Number Five also waiting for him still apparently ten-years-old. Spaceboy has many questions, but Dr. Pogo tells him that he will have to wait; the others will arrive the next day.

The following morning, Spaceboy is woken up by Doctor Pogo. Pogo tells Spaceboy that his sister Allison, alias the Rumor, has arrived. Rumor is waiting at the foot of a statue of their brother Ben, the Horror. She attempts to comfort Spaceboy by telling his that he was not responsible for Ben’s death and also tells him that she recently filed for divorce. They are then joined by Séance who shares a few short and flippant words with his siblings before entering the house.
The next day a local carnival pays host to a strange group of robotic invaders called the Terminauts. They have predicted the reformation of the Umbrella Academy and have chosen the carnival as their base of operations. They are puzzled by the lack of concern shown by its patrons, so the proceed to destroy a merry-go-round.
Number five tells how he had visited the future and saw the end of the world. At first he rejoiced in his apparent freedom until he realized just how bad the situation was. He sought out a library and read a book written by Number Seven and learned how things had gone so wrong with the team; how number six had died and how they had all failed. Despite having been told that travelling back in time was impossible, he spent fifty years in calculations to find a way to return. He eventually succeeded, but unexpectedly emerged from the time stream too soon to join his now grown up siblings.
The Kraken explains that the security cameras in the house stopped functioning shortly before the death of the Hargreeves, but he had managed to perform a secret autopsy to discover that the apparent cause of death was a heart attack. Old tensions between the Kraken and Spaceboy begin to run high until Doctor Pogo gathers the team to attend the funeral.
As requested by Hargreeves, they all attend in costume. They are at a loss for words at his grave site, but are joined by their mother who begins to share some thoughts. Kraken interrupts her speech to rip off her overcoat to reveal that she is artificial; some sort of living mannequin. Kraken notes that it is unfortunate that Vanya could not attend. She could have played her violin.
Downtown, Vanya enters the rundown Icarus Theatre and finds herself in a sudden spotlight. She is told to play something. The music is beautiful in spite of her lack of practice. The house lights come up and her host introduces himself as the Conductor. He asks her to help him destroy the world by playing his new piece: The Apocalypse Suite. She walks out, but the Conductor is convinced that she will return.
Back at the mansion, the Kraken as pushed things to far and has started a fight with Spaceboy. Number Five breaks up the fight telling them that the end of the world that he had seen occurred three days after Hargreeves death. They have no time for squabbles. They notice the carnival is burning many miles away and Spaceboy recognizes it as the work of the Terminauts, constructions of Doctor Terminal. The team is reformed in order to deal with the threat.

Death: The Conductor
Years ago, Number Seven had a lot of trouble accepting that she did not have a special talent. She felt she did not belong with her siblings, but Doctor Pogo offered her comfort. He told her that she was special.
Now, as she is being subject to the Conductor's torturous manipulations she learns that the Monocle kept a secret. After reading the Monocle's notes, the Conductor has learned that Vanya is quite possibly the most dangerous of all the siblings. Using the notes, she is painfully transformed.
Number Five flies through the city searching for the apocalypse. Joining him in his flight, Doctor Pogo questions Number Five's sanity. Number Five defends himself; he believes that what he saw will come to pass.
Spaceboy, Séance, Rumour and Kraken return to the mansion but old arguments are renewed and Kraken storms out. The remaining three decide to go and patrol the city.
Doctor Pogo and Number Five stop at a diner for coffee and are interrupted by a trio wearing strange outfits marked "Temps".
At the Icarus Theatre the Conductor explains his dream of finding a way to kill billions of people all at the same time. He tells of all his previous ideas which have lead this very night, as he introduces Vanya transformed into the White Violin. She slowly takes up her violin, turns to the Conductor and pulls her bow across the strings, splitting the Conductor down the middle. Applause rings out in the theatre as the White Violin proclaims that tonight will be the end of the Umbrella Academy, and tomorrow shall be the end of the world.

Death: Doctor Pogo
Inspector Lupo questions Agnes following the recent bloody events in Costello's Diner. She tells him how a small boy and a chimpanzee had come into the diner at approximately 5 AM and ordered coffee. Shortly afterwards the two had been confronted by a group of strangely garbed men and the boy quickly and mercilessly killed them before leaving.
Completing his report, Lupo returns to his cruiser to find Kraken waiting for him in the back seat. Lupo tells Kraken about the murders at Costello's and the description of the suspect. He also tells of how there have been many violin virtuosos reported missing recently, but when he turns he finds the back seat empty. Kraken has left through the window.
Back at the mansion Number Five searches the Monocle’s office for a gun. He plans to end his own life if the apocalypse starts offering the same courtesy to Doctor Pogo. He sidesteps discussion about the incident at the diner explaining that there are many things he has done in order to return from the future. As he begins to explain what he has done, he absently places Hargreeves monocle to his eye. In a flash he witnesses horrible experimentation being performed on a chimpanzee. The experience is too much for him and he passes out from the strain.
Spaceboy and Rumor take a few moments on a rooftop to catch up. Rumor begins to talk about her daughter but Spaceboy eventually remarks that he has not seen Rumor use her power and asks if she has lost it. Rumor asks why Spaceboy only talks about their powers and being a hero. He states that given his current appearance he can think of little else. They share a passionate embrace and she tells him that she is scared. Not far away, they are watched by Séance.
Downtown, Kraken goes to visit Vanya but only finds piece of paper with 'ICARUS' written on it.
The White Violin leads the Orchestra Yerdammten to the mansion and blows out all of its windows with a single draw across her violin. The next note slices the statue of The Horror in half. Doctor Pogo cannot contain his shock and cries out drawing the attention of the White Violin. She turns to him and blasts his brain out of the back of his head with another focused note, then calmly walks away. As Number Five looks down at the dead chimp, Spaceboy, Séance and Rumor fly up to the window and as what happened.

The Umbrella Academy has recently discovered that the pending apocalypse will be the result of their wayward sister Vanya Hargreeves, now calling herself the White Violin. As she plays, she leads the Orchestra Yerdammten in a symphony of death. The Kraken manages to sneak up behind her putting a knife to her throat. The White Violin manages to put him the Kraken off balance be telling him that he loves her long enough to strum her violin blowing her brother through a wall.
The siblings then join forces to stop the White Violin. The Rumour begins to speak what would become a truth, but her throat it slit open by another stroke of a violin. The Orchestra Yerdammten attacks, but Spaceboy grabs the Rumour and takes her away from the danger to a Hospital.
Out among the seats of the audience, The Séance suddenly appears. He is channelling the spirit of the Monocle and had brought Igor Stravinsky, Manchester Children's Orchestra and some members of the Ube tribe. The will play Stravinsky's Rite of Spring as a specific tempo in an attempt to cancel out the playing of the White Violin and the Orchestra Yerdammten. As they play, the White Violin's anger grows. The Séance tells her she has lost and she is an embarrassment. The Kraken tries to tell her that it is not true, but Number 5 suddenly shoots her in the head.
The Séance reveals that he was really no channelling their father, but is interrupted by the wounded but still alive White Violin lying on the floor. She may no longer be playing but what she has already set in motion cannot be stopped. A giant meteor is falling directly towards them.
Remarkably, the Séance stops the massive rock with a single outstretched hand. His powers of levitation are obviously far more powerful than anyone could have ever guessed.
In the hospital the Rumour's life has been saved, but she would never speak again. Vanya's life had also been saved, the bullet had not impacted any vital areas of her brain but had to be left in place for fear of disrupting the remaining nerves. It was believed that her memory would return, but she would never play the violin again. The Orchestra Yerdammten was arrested by Inspector Lupo, many of its members would receive a death sentence.
Returning home, the Umbrella Academy learns that the mansion has been destroyed in their absence by a crash landing Eiffel Tower. In the ruins of their home, Spaceboy takes a few moments to make himself a sandwich.
