First Appearance: Victoria Campos
Origin: X-Factor Investigations
New Costume: Rictor, Siryn, Wolfsbane
Joins: Layla Miller, M, Siryn (X-Factor Investigations)
Death: Victoria Campos

Rictor, having lost his powers on M-Day, considers jumping to his death from a high building. Hoping to talk him down, but not feeling optimistic enough himself, Jamie Madrox sends a duplicate to do the job. Rictor explains to Jamie’s dupe how the loss of his powers has changed the way he sees the world, and the dupe explains how X-Factor Investigations was revamped when Jamie won a million dollars on a game show by using his mutant talents. With the money, Jamie was able to buy their building, and bring in some new people, including Siryn and M.

At the Power Plant bar, Siryn meets with Victoria, an informant who has become infatuated with Theresa because of her newfound ability to mesmerize others with her vocal power. Before Theresa can explain, the two realize Victoria was set up, and she is fatally wounded by a drive-by shooter, dying in Siryn’s arms. Strong Guy tries to stop the shooter’s car, but fails, incurring Siryn’s wrath, who follows after the car. Siryn catches up with the shooter, who, despite Theresa’s willingness to fight, shoots and kills herself.

Wolfsbane arrives on the scene of Rictor’s prospective suicide, and using a bullhorn and religious rhetoric, loudly assures him that his fate will be much worse if he goes through with it.

At X-Factor Investigations’ building, a girl named Layla Miller asks Siryn a question, gives Strong Guy some information, and unilaterally joins the X-Factor team.

Rahne’s assurances having finally convinced him, Rictor agrees to safely exit the roof, but before he can, the dupe reveals something shocking about himself. He’s the part of Jamie that compels him to do the unexpected. He’s the fly in the ointment, the spanner in the works. He’s unpredictable. He’s the X-Factor. And with that, he shoves Rictor off the building.

First Appearance: Singularity Investigations; Damien Tryp, Sr.; “Old Man"; Gloria Santiago; Rachel Santiago; Jack Vaughn
New Costume: M
Joins: Rictor (X-Factor Investigations)
Death: Rachel Santiago

As M-Day protestors march through the streets of Mutant Town, Layla reorganizes X-Factor’s files, assures Siryn that inapt retaliation against Singularity Investigations would be a very bad idea, and welcomes their newest client, Gloria Santiago.

Before Wolfsbane can reach him, Monet St. Croix swoops in and catches the falling -- and shocked -- Rictor, gibing Rahne at the same time.

Jamie confronts his rogue dupe, the two trading philosophical barbs, before Jamie reabsorbs him with a promise to never release him again.

As the crowds outside grow more restless, Gloria Santiago explains to X-Factor that her sister has changed recently, believing an evil mutant to be responsible. Siryn doubts her theory, but before she dismisses Ms. Santiago, Layla tells her that she’s the way into Singularity, and that she knows this purely because she’s Layla Miller. Siryn agrees to help, hoping the case brings her face-to-face with Singularity.

At Singularity Investigations, Damian Tryp, Sr. questions his “Old Man” over a change in the course of the day’s expected events, namely Siryn’s distinct lack of crashing into SI’s headquarters, ending up shot to death. The two debate what it means and what ramifications could result--not to mention the grammatical confusion of the “Decimation”--as their plans for Madrox and X-Factor involve the team playing an important part in the future, although they are uncertain how. Either X-Factor will be responsible for re-empowering the disenfranchised mutants--which Singularity does not want, or they will maintain the status quo--which would mean that SI intervening would be disastrous. Flustered, Damian sends off the “Old Man” for better intel, lamenting the challenges of being evil.

Rictor rides his motorcycle to X-Factor, with M floating alongside, annoying the depowered mutants. She suggests that he come inside, but Julio declines, not wanting to end up hating the team for retaining their powers, and because Jamie--in a sense-- just tried to kill him. Before riding off, Rictor accepts a coupon from Layla for a particular gas station nearby.

At the Marquis hotel, Rachel Santiago engages in some off-the-books recreation with a Mr. Vaughn, while Siryn takes pictures from an outside ledge, laughing at Gloria’s theory.

While Rictor refills his motorcycle at Layla’s choice gas station, an ex-mutant couple come out fighting over their different takes on M-Day, with Ronnie readying to shoot his girlfriend rather than let her break up with him. She begs Rictor to intervene, hiding behind him as he douses Ronnie in gasoline. Ronnie threatens Rictor, telling him that he has no idea what they’re going through, but Rictor replies that he does, warning Ronnie not to fire. Ronnie pulls the trigger, the spark from the hammer engulfing him in flames, and Rictor and the girlfriend ride off on his motorcycle, leaving Ronnie behind.

Back at X-Factor, Siryn shows Gloria Santiago the pictures of her sister in the throes of passion with Mr. Vaughn, and M fails to hide her lack of surprise at a supposedly innocent girl giving it up for an A-list movie star. Gloria leaves rather abruptly, having more than paid for X-Factor’s services, wishing the team a good day. Jamie passes Gloria on her way out, praising M’s catching ability earlier, explaining that he’s been walking around trying to clear his head. M reminds him that it was one of his dupes that nearly killed Rictor, and Jamie says the situation is complicated. Rictor enters, asking for it to be simplified for him.

Later, Layla warns Jamie that a soon-to-be-incoming call is important, and when it comes, Gloria is on the other end asking for help, as she’s being arrested for the murder of her sister.

First Appearance: Damien Tryp Jr

While Theresa dreams of Ewan, Liam, lightsabers, and swimming down the toilet, Layla fiddles with her alarm clock, waking her early -- just in time to join Madrox on a mission. Before they leave, Layla warns Jamie not to take the car, so Siryn flies him to the Marquis hotel, where their client, Gloria Santiago, has been arrested for killing her sister. As they fly, Jamie thinks about Layla, the answers and questions she brings.

The two reach the roof of the Marquis, where Jamie dismounts using some Olympic gymnastics knowledge garnered from a dupe. Siryn asks if there is anything one of his dupes has not done, and Jamie replies, “had sex,” which surprises Terry, leading her to ask if he was being serious. Jamie says he was not, that his dupes have actually been pretty active, but that he is also not sure how much was them or him, explaining that for the years he has been reabsorbing dupes, he is not quite sure which memories are theirs, and which his.

Arriving at the edge of the crime scene, “Jamie Madrox, Esq.” uses his bar card to convince the police that they are Gloria’s lawyers, but is not allowed access to the crime scene. Siryn steps in, using her newfound ability to modulate her voice to persuade the officer to let them through, and Jamie makes fun of her for some Irish-isms she throws in, with Terry joking that he gets to walk home.

The two reach Jack Vaugn, Rachel Santiago’s lover, and Siryn tries the same trick on him, asking for the truth. Before he can respond, though, Damian Tryp, Jr. steps in, exposing them as manipulative mutants and himself as Mr. Vaugn’s attorney, son of Damian Tryp, and co-head of Singularity Investigations. He asks that Madrox and Siryn be escorted out before interfering with the investigation, offering them a business card sporting the tagline, “Your past and present is our future.”

Back at X-Factor, Rictor hears someone getting beaten up, and heads outside to help, encountering a gang of baseline humans ganged up on a former mutant. They trade words with Rictor, and prepare to do the same to him, until Guido and Rahne step in, and the thugs disappear around the corner. Their screams can be heard, so Rictor takes the victim inside, while Strong Guy and Wolfsbane head toward the din.

Inside, Monet complains to Layla about her very presence, as well as the lack of screws to hold the bathtub handles on, and Layla promises to let Monet know when she has fixed the latter problem.

Guido and Rahne come upon “the first serious riot in Mutant Town,” where “reals,” baseline humans who are self-anointed to wipe out the former mutant population, come head-to-head with it.

At Police headquarters, Madrox and Siryn question Gloria about her actions earlier in the night, which she cannot remember -- everything from arriving at the scene of the crime to being arrested for her sister’s murder. Madrox and Siryn debate amongst themselves whether her flat, lifeless voice is from shock or a telepathic mind-wipe courtesy of Singularity, and Jamie decides to call in their very own telepath, M.

Meanwhile, M prances around her apartment in X-Factor’s building, wearing only a bathrobe and headphones blaring “Too Sexy”. As M loses the robe, Rictor innocently asks to come in, and misinterprets her singing along as an invitation, leading to an awkward moment. M shoves him outside and demands privacy, denying Rictor’s request to help Guido and Rahne. Rictor heads back downstairs to check on the mobbing victim, but is blindsided by a Singularity Investigations agent, whose plan to cut Rictor’s throat, and make it look like an accident, is interrupted by Layla.

Outside, Strong Guy and Wolfsbane are embroiled in the riot, ex-mutant against ex-mutant, with “reals” adding to the chaos. In the end, Guido and Rahne drive out the invading rioters, swearing to kill them if they ever return to Mutant Town.

The SI agent calls his boss, Mr. Tryp, alerting him to Layla’s interference without knowing her name, and hangs up as he moves forward with his orders. Layla tells him of his plan, that SI believes that someone -- who was not supposed to -- joined X-Factor and is causing confusion about the future. She continues that SI is mistaken in its belief that Rictor -- as someone who almost died -- is the guilty party, that it is really her they are after, and the agent pulls out a blade.

Layla keeps talking, explaining how her hated job is to lie to X-Factor, to keep them from ever finding out the truth about the Decimation -- and to make it stick, and that because of it, she lost her parents twice. The agent offers her some cold comfort, promising to end her misery right now, but Layla tells him that he will not, “because of these.” She explains that the two metal implements in her hand mean he is “screwed.” Water begins to leak from the ceiling above the agent, and he sidesteps a falling panel. He scoffs, thinking Layla missed him, before a pair of dangling electrical cables mortally fry him. Upstairs, Monet floats clad in a bathrobe, headphones firmly in place, and yells about the lights going out.

Layla stands in the dark, flashlight in hand, noting Monet’s anger and that she will have to shut off the water so the tub stops overflowing, and then get the power back on. She tells the agent, who lies on the floor, his seared flesh smoking, that his heart will give out in about five seconds, and that while his mother will mourn him, his wife won’t. He asks with his dying breath who she is, and she responds, holding the flashlight to her face, “I’m Layla Miller. I know stuff.”

At X-Factor, Monet answers a call from Madrox, who asks that she come to the police station to mindscan Gloria Santiago--adding that she should not stop for anything, which leaves Layla to clean up after her would-be assassin.

M soars over downtown Mutant Town, heading for the uptown police station, while below, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, and the depowered mutant population faces a police force called in by the “reals.”

M reaches the station, telling Madrox and Siryn of the riot, but as Jamie fears releasing his murderous dupe, he sends Siryn to help. When she steps outside, Siryn trades wits with Damian Tryp, Jr., who admits his attraction as she flies away.

After bantering with Jamie about the case, M places her hands on Gloria’s head, her eyes darkening to a solid black, as she begins to telepathically inspect the woman’s mind. M’s physical reactions concern Madrox to the point of trying to intervene. In her trance, M mindlessly socks Jamie, the force forming a dupe with some anger issues, who questions Jamie’s fear concerning his powers. Completing her examination, M promises to deal with the situation personally, refusing to give more details to Madrox.

At Singularity Investigations, Jack Vaughn demands to be allowed to return to Hollywood, and the elder Damian Tryp reluctantly agrees, wishing his client a good trip.

Guido and Rahne try to defend their actions, and those of their neighbors, as simply defending their home, but the S.W.A.T. team disagrees, claiming that they have no sovereignty. Siryn begs to disagree, trying and failing to “woo” the well-outfitted lead officer with her voice, so she switches to a backup plan. Siryn tells the officers to scram, to hit the road, that Mutant Town is a haven for any former mutant who feels afraid, threatened, and vulnerable, and that X-Factor is its first, best line of defense. The lead officer asks Siryn what will happen if they refuse, and she responds, “I’ll scream.” From a distance, a deluge of police cars and officers comes rushing down the boulevard, accompanied by Siryn’s cry, and Guido thinks that “that works.”

On a Global Films private jet, taxied at the airport, Jack Vaughn flirts with the flight attendant bringing him drinks, as M looms outside. M presses her hand to the window, her eyes again becoming solid, as Jack asks the attendant for a refill. She gladly brings it, comparing Jack’s murderous nature to an unquenchable lust for potato chips, all in the guise of an undead Rachel. Jack, disbelieving his eyes, listens to her recounting of the events of the previous night, his “accidentally” shooting Rachel, and her promises to be always with him, reminding him, teasing him. He snaps, threatening to kill “Rachel” at full volume, shocking both her and the pilot, the latter restraining him.

Outside an electronics store, watching the news on the televisions in the window, Madrox hears of Jack Vaughn’s arrest for Rachel’s murder, that he “was still ranting as authorities wrestled him into a police car.” M descends from above, silently landing next to Jamie, as the news continues reporting on the riot ended by X-Factor. Jamie comments on the craziness of the night, beginning to congratulate Monet on her success, before noticing her emotion. Tears flow from her eyes, as she recalls feeling what Rachel felt as she died. Jamie tries to comfort her with a hug, and M threatens to break him in half if he ever tells anyone about it.

Returning to X-Factor, Jamie discovers a ton of water damage and a bill from a private messenger service for $1,000, as Layla puts it, “because they’ll go anywhere at any time, and they don’t ask questions.”

In a Singularity Investigations loading dock, Damian Tryp, Jr. receives a large crate, which he rips open with his bare hands. Inside, his would-be assassin stands packed in bubble wrap, with a note attached, reading, “STAY OUT of MUTANT TOWN! xoxoxoxo X-Factor”, with Tryp anything but impressed.

On X-Factor’s front stoop, Siryn and Rictor trade war stories from the day, with Rictor recounting how when he came to, Layla told him that his attempted murderer “just got packed up and left.” Julio says that when he feels sorry for himself the best thing to do is get drunk, which Terry denies, reminding him that she’s a drunk. She deals with it by eating, asking him to breakfast at a diner two blocks away, but he refuses. Terry jokes that if he’s braving Jamie’s taste in breakfast foods, it’s his funeral, as she walks away.

Walking past an alleyway, Siryn is shot in the neck with a dart, which paralyzes her voice, and is bashed over the head with a pipe, which knocks her to the ground. Damian Tryp, Jr. stands over her as she struggles to breathe, a deadness in his eyes, before beating her with the pipe. He only stops after it is drenched in her blood, tossing the pipe as he walks away with a musical flourish.

At Singularity Investigations, Madrox has a meeting with Messrs Damian Tryp, Junior and Senior, who offer to sign X-Factor to an exclusive deal for fifty million dollars. The offer is refused, and Jamie’s dupe is telekinetically tossed through a window, but recalled by Jamie, who stands atop the building. Jamie takes what he learns to plan the next move against Singularity.

Scott Summers arrives at X-Factor with some news for Siryn, passing Layla on the way, and failing to hide his knowledge of the mysterious girl. Scott tells Siryn of Banshee’s death, who doesn’t believe it, what with the X-Men’s history with fatality. A video will, featuring Banshee, wills her Cassidy Keep and her father’s pipe, but she is still in disbelief.

First Appearance: Doctor Malcolm Modern

X-Factor Investigations receives word from the X-Men warning of the dangers Pietro Maximoff poses, and the likelihood of his soon arrival in their New York protectorate of Mutant Town. X-Factor members express their doubts about the dangerousness of their former teammate, while Pietro walks in front of their building, where the mysterious Layla Miller is reading a book. Layla tosses a rock at a nearby ex-mutant and blames Pietro, prompting two ex-mutants to chase after Pietro, getting him away from the building. Madrox and Strong Guy exit the building, discussing the possibility of having been lied to by the X-Men, and Guido asks Layla what book she’s reading. Layla tells him, “Atlas Shrugged,” and Guido and Jamie walk off, discussing Layla’s inherent oddity.

Still inside X-Factor Investigations, Rictor works on a crossword puzzle, with Monet St. Croix helping/making fun, and Siryn vocalizes her disgust over the Superhuman Registration Act praised in J. Jonah Jameson’s Daily Bugle. Siryn argues with Monet about the logic of the Act, and Rictor asks about the X-Men’s position, with Siryn questioning X-Men leader Cyclops’ strange behavior around Layla. Rictor wonders if Layla could be a spy, just as she comes in, telling them that she doesn’t know of any spies, and she warns Siryn not to answer an incoming call: Jamie asking her to talk to other superheroes about M-Day. On her way out, Layla passes a suited man on his way in, who mentions that Layla’s not in his files and asks if he should know her, with Layla saying that no one does. Alone again, Layla quietly apologizes as she watches Siryn fly away from the building.

Now inside X-Factor’s office, the man refers to Monet’s muscle control as she performs a one-handed handstand, but she disagrees with his reasoning, asking why Jamie sent a duplicate back to the office. The Madrox “co-original” explains that he’s from the government, and that he’s there to sign them up pursuant to the Super Hero Registration Act, flashing his badge and introducing himself as Jamie Madrox: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Back outside, a flying man soars past Layla, one of the previously depowered mutants that had been chasing Pietro. He praises Pietro’s miraculous ability to return his missing powers, with Layla responding in shock that that wasn’t supposed to happen. She explains how the two ex-mutants were supposed to chase Pietro, forcing him to use his new power to shunt into the near future and get hit by a truck, saying that the flier messed things up, and calling him a big dummy. The repowered mutant threatens to land and teach Layla some manners, but he loses control of his power and floats off into the sky with a resounding scream, as Layla pouts over her unusual failure.

At Modern Labs, Madrox and Strong Guy learn from Doctor Malcolm Modern that the head of Singularity Investigations, Damian Tryp Sr. and his supposed son of the same name have identical DNA; they are the same person.

Elsewhere, Spider-Man foils a robbery with the help of a sonic lance courtesy of Siryn, and the two debate the philosophy of the Registration Act. With Spider-Man heralding honesty, Siryn uses her newfound ability to vocally coerce him into telling her everything he knows about the Decimation.

Rahne returns to X-Factor, learning that Layla’s waiting outside for something that she’ll know when it arrives. Once Rahne heads inside, a deformed man, the other formerly ex-mutant chasing Pietro lays blame on a shocked Layla. Once inside, Rahne learns that Monet and Rictor have complied with the Registration Act, as both claim they have nothing to hide. Back outside, Layla apologizes to the deformed mutant before he loses control of his power, turning to liquid and running into the gutter. Rahne comes back outside, telling Layla that she looks as though she has the weight of the world on her shoulders, and asks how she deals with that. Layla responds simply that she shrugs. As Jamie walks home with Guido, Siryn calls to tell him all she learned from Spider-Man, that the X-Men know why the mutants lost their powers. Although Siryn wants to go kick in the Institute door, ask some questions, and kick some “arse,” Jamie orders her to meet him back at headquarters.

Back at X-Factor, Pietro returns and asks Layla if he knows her. She responds, using his codename, Quicksilver, that he does and that they are nemeses. Pietro compares Layla to his daughter, whom he hurt out of love, and asks Layla to imagine what he could do to her out of hate or anger or revenge. The two trade philosophies on good and evil, with Pietro trying to explain how they’re on the same side. Layla disagrees, calling him evil and claiming that evil is impotent, that it has no power but what it is allowed to extort. Layla tells Pietro that they’re waiting for him, and Pietro warns her that it would be best to stay out of his way, with Layla admitting that that would be the right thing to do. Pietro says that they’re agreed then, and heads inside, wishing Layla a good day as Jamie and Guido come down the block and Siryn lands atop the building.

Jamie Madrox finds it difficult to keep the peace at X-Factor Investigations in the wake of Pietro Maximoff’s arrival. Pietro’s involvement in the House of M and Decimation angers almost everyone, but his revelation that his exposure to the Terrigen Mists allows him to empower ex-mutants and anti-Registration stance leads to more uncertainty within the team. Jamie is called upon to make a decision, but he instead leaves the office.

Outside, Jamie confronts Layla Miller about her knowledge of the House of M, but they ultimately come to the stalemate that she’s still a help. Layla points him to a particular northward intersection, that’ll help him make up his mind about the Registration Act, telling him to pick up a hat, scarf, and gloves on the way. Jamie assures Layla that their issues haven’t been resolved, and she agrees; they‘ll be arguing for a long time to come because they eventually get married.

Jamie follows Layla’s directions, running into former New Warrior Aegis, who’s fleeing from an approaching S.H.I.E.L.D. team hunting him for unregistered heroics. Aegis compares the current singling out of superhumans to other forms of discrimination and urges Jamie to get to safety. Jamie refuses, saying that villains should be afraid of heroes, and that they shouldn’t be afraid of the people they’re trying to rescue. The two run into an empty building as the S.H.I.E.L.D. team forms around the entrance, and demands that Aegis come out. A small army of Madrox duplicates storms the agents, keeping their attention, while the original and Aegis are able to get away, hidden by the same hat, scarf, and gloves as the dupes. Aegis thanks Jamie and heads into the subway system in the hopes of running into Captain America, and Jamie, whose dupes have been identified, calls them all rushing back to him like gusts of wind.

In a boutique, Pietro picks out a new suit, when most of the Astonishing X-Men (Beast, Colossus, Cyclops, Shadowcat, Wolverine) arrive and call him out. Layla shows up, informing the team that X-Factor knows that they were lied to about the Decimation, and that they figured it out themselves. Wolverine tells Layla that she should run home to her folks, but Layla explains that she’s really an orphan, her parents only alive again in the “other” world until she woke up again in the orphanage in the world she hated. X-Factor shows up, ready to fight the X-Men for their deceitfulness, and the teams exchange a sonic scream for an optic blast, the latter taken by Madrox, who converts the concussive force into a mob of dupes. Jamie dares Cyclops to continue the battle, with Cyclops defending his decision to withhold the truth from them, and at Rahne’s request, informing them that the X-Men’s official stance on registration is neutral. Pietro appears among the group, having used his time-traveling powers, compares the government’s actions to those of the Nazis, and vanishes again. Jamie tells Cyclops that he’s going to hold a press conference announcing X-Factor’s opposition to the Registration Act, and asks if the X-Men will support them. Cyclops says that they can’t, that they’ve already agreed otherwise, and Jamie tells them to get the hell out of Mutant Town. Cyclops agrees, but warns Madrox to keep Quicksilver in Mutant Town because otherwise they’ll know and come after him again. Cyclops further tells Jamie to enjoy his little kingdom while he can, because when it all falls apart, they won’t be there to help. As the X-Men depart, Rahne asks Jamie if they won, and he responds that he honestly doesn‘t know.

First Appearance: Andras, Dai, Alix Buchanan, Professor Henry Buchanan, Mrs. D
Death: Dai’s mother (mentioned, flashback), Professor Henry Buchanan

In 1347, in the south of Wales, an angry mob of villagers calls out Andras, demanding that he present his son, Dai. They believe him to be a changeling that replaced the real Dai, responsible for a plague ravaging the area, as evidenced by his inhuman strength and intelligence, and “the way the very air protects him.” Believing the illness to be Satan’s doing, the villagers have already killed all of the “wicked” cats, allowing the rodent population explode, and leaving Dai as the only likely suspect. Andras refuses to sacrifice his son, thinking that the others will eventually come to their senses, but they instead set the house on fire. Dai tries to defend them, calling down a wind to blow out the flames, which instead spreads the fire to the rest of the town.

Dai finds himself on a precipice overlooking the town, which is engulfed in flame. Dai wonders what has happened, what he has done, when an apparitional Damian Tryp, Sr. assures him that he only did what he needed to, that Dai will understand in time, as he did. Damian’s state, out of synch with the physical world around them, makes Dai think he is a ghost. Dai also wonders if he may have died in the fire, which is gone when he looks back to the town, with the villagers still talking to his father at the front door. Dai thinks that he’s lost his mind, that it’s the end, but Damian corrects him, that “as cliché as this will sound… this is just the beginning.”

In the modern day, Damian Tryp, Sr. plans his day with assistant Mrs. D, learning that Henry Buchanan, a Singularity employee who never before missed a day of work, has called in sick. Realizing the potential implications, Tryp asks for Mr. C‘s number, in case his services are needed.

At their home in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Henry Buchanan and his wife, Alix, discuss his recent emotional downturn. Alix suggests that if it is his work that is bothering Henry, he quit, at which he scoffs, claiming that there is no “quit,” that Singularity would “…disapprove.” Furthermore, Henry explains that if he tells Alix any details, she would be put in danger, and that going to the police or government would be pointless, as Singularity has a very long reach. Alix proposes trying an independent organization, with Henry asking her to leave town -- to go to her sister’s cabin in Seattle -- for her own safety. Henry thinks he’s found help: X-Factor, who are the subject of a front page article in the Daily Bugle.

Jamie Madrox wakes battling a hangover headache, wondering why the government hasn’t yet rounded up his team, who respected Jamie for making a decision. He runs into a lascivious dupe he doesn’t remember forming, who drops some vague hints about the night before, with Jamie reabsorbing him. Theresa appears and gives Jamie a passionate kiss, telling him how fantastic he was the previous night, that their former relationship must have been just a warm-up. Surprised enough as it is, Jamie then runs into Monet, who gives him an equally fiery kiss, claiming that because of the previous night, she now knows why he’s called the “Multiple Man.” Monet and Theresa then bicker over use of the bathroom, each ignorant of the other’s recent activities. Jamie wanders off, thinking to himself, when he encounters Layla, who tells him that the downstairs bathroom is free. Jamie reluctantly asks Layla if the two of them had done anything the night before, which she assures him they didn’t, as she’s saving herself for their wedding night.

Guido whistles and plays with his yo-yo while he walks toward a street corner, having Henry Buchanan literally run into him, rambling about “them” wanting to kill him. Guido asks who “they“ are, regretting wanting to see them try, as a bazooka fires at the two from a nearby car. Jamie, Rahne, and Siryn hear the explosion and rush outside, asking Guido if he’s okay, but he can’t hear because of the blast.

The group calms the situation, learning about Buchanan’s connection to Singularity, and Layla admits to not being able to read either Henry or Guido as well as she can most people. Henry explains that he is a microbiologist, most of his tenure at S.I. having been forensic, but that for the past year, they’ve had him working on a virus. A virus that would target and kill mutants. Jamie lashes out at Henry, raging at the thought of someone recreating the Legacy Virus, as he had experienced death by the virus via one of his dupes. Jamie reminds himself that Henry’s not inhuman, as he came to them for help, apparently wanting to stop it. Henry tells the group that he has proof of Singularity’s wrongdoings: memos, notes, CD-ROMs -- things he smuggled out of the office. They are now in a safe deposit box at the Manhattan Bank on 34th and 6th, so Jamie asks Guido to escort Henry to the bank by car to retrieve his files.

At a local medical center, Pietro Maximoff and Julio Richter discuss the latter’s recent loss of mutant status, as well as the former’s apparent ability to restore such power. Julio doubts Pietro’s skills, as he’s heard stories about the “restored” powers turning on their former masters. Pietro explains his belief that M-Day served as part of a divine test, designed to restore the nobility of the mutant species by leaving only the deserving intact. Pietro continues, detailing that the results of his restoration of power rely on the deservedness of the afflicted, that those whose powers twisted and warped were merely reflecting their own natures. In Pietro’s mind, the question should not be, “What will go wrong?”, but rather, Julio finishes, “Will I be judged deserving?”

While Henry and Guido chat on the drive to the bank, Henry expresses his discomfort over being in a Hummer, and confusion over Jamie’s supposed “death” of the Legacy Virus. Guido’s phone rings, and he receives a mission of some sort, with Henry reminding him that there is a law against it, that he doesn’t want to get pulled over. Guido tells Henry that there’s a change in plan, before brutally and efficiently killing the man. Guido tells his boss that he completed the mission, that he has to hang up now because of the laws against talking on a cell phone, as he wouldn’t want to be pulled over. Damian Tryp, Sr. agrees -- they wouldn’t want that, further instructing Guido to bring the corpse to the rendezvous point. Tryp asks Mrs. D to “inform Personnel that Henry Buchanan won’t be back. It appears he has moved on.” “Yes, Mr. Tryp.”

First Appearance: Damian Tryp
Origin: Damian Tryp, Jamie Madrox

Years ago, Damian Tryp, Jr. meets with Joan and Daniel Madrox, to discuss their young son, Jamie. Tryp wants Jamie to join Singularity, while his parents are leaning more toward Charles Xavier‘s care, the predominant expert on mutants. Tryp claims that Jamie is not a mutant, as evidenced by his powers having surfaced at birth, rather than during adolescence. Tryp instead asserts that Jamie is a “changeling,” one of the “replacement people,” a “killcrop,” like himself. He explains that in ages past, those born with superhuman abilities were often killed at birth, and so, over time, evolved the time-delayed nature of the modern day mutant, “upping the survival likelihood.” Joan asks Tryp what his killcrop powers are, and Damian replies that the most pertinent to them is elemental manipulation, such as the ability to command the wind. He could summon a tornado to kill them both, and everyone would believe it an act of God, “And who knows? Maybe they’d be right.” Tryp wishes the couple a goody day, encountering the young Jamie outside. He asks Tryp to confirm if what he’d heard -- that he’s not really a mutant -- is true, with Damian alleging to not remember saying that and asking if that’s what Jamie remembers. Damian then asks Jamie if he remembers him at all, with the boy responding, “No.” Tryp walks away; “I didn’t think so.”

Now, Jamie learns from Guido that Henry Buchanan has disappeared, and takes the news poorly. Guido explains that when he took Buchanan to the bank, he was asked to wait in the lobby, and that while he waited, Buchanan had gone. Guido wonders how he could have screwed it up, with Rahne trying to assure him, until she picks up a scent on his hand. She smells Buchanan’s blood and spittle, but Guido vehemently denies having any knowledge of it, and Jamie orders Monet to take Guido. The super-strong telepath burrows into Guido’s mind, seeing flashes of Damian Tryp, Sr., telling Jamie that she believes he has flipped, that he’s working for Singularity, before being thrown through a brick wall. Guido rages, tearing up the room, until Siryn screams him outside, and Layla refuses to clean up the mess. Outside, Guido grabs Rictor by the head and threatens to squeeze, while M continues reading his mind, identifying another personality. Guido screams in agony, burning from the inside out, seemingly a fail-safe installed by Tryp. Quicksilver reveals himself, having used his restorative powers on the still-powered Guido, causing a sort of cellular feedback and knocking him out for hours. The others are surprised by the revelation that Pietro can knock out any mutant he wants, and Pietro announces his protection of Rictor.

Back inside, Layla explains that Guido was apparently brainwashed by Singularity at some point, programmed to respond to a codeword. Jamie is especially disturbed that he didn’t notice Guido’s recent change in behavior, believing his darker tone to be caused by his fallout with long-time friend Lila Cheney. Monet reasons that Guido may have been unable to recall his break with Lila, as well as Sean Cassidy’s identity as Banshee, as that type of mental manipulation could cause memory gaps. Agreeing that there is enough blame to go around, the team plans their next move against Singularity, deciding to acquire the original documents on Buchanan’s research into the deadly-to-mutants virus. Layla gets Mrs. Buchanan on the phone for Jamie, and she tells him that her husband kept all of his work in his office in S.I.’s building. Jamie, with a little more help from Layla, deceptively reassures Alix of her husband’s safety, and prompts her to get on the road immediately. Jamie tells the others of his plan to get into S.I. To retrieve Buchanan’s files: confusion, everyone gone, the element of surprise.

As Alix Buchanan readies to leave, writing a quick note to the mailman, she opens the door to Damian Tryp, Jr., who asks if he can help.

Outside Singularity Investigations headquarters, the FBI, Homeland Security, and the Fire Department and Police have all been called in to investigate a bomb threat, to the annoyance of Damian Tryp, Sr. Inside, what appear to be Bomb Squad officers order out the last of S.I.’s security, taking command of the monitoring hub. Alone now with Rictor, Siryn takes off her cumbersome mask, identifies herself as “Screaming Mimi,” and radios “Schizoid Man” that they are good to go, as Big Brother is no longer watching. Jamie responds, entering from the roof with Monet and Rahne. He and Monet trade quips about felonious acts being committed, and she expresses her appreciation with a quick moment of physicality, the “rump grab” shocking Rahne, despite Jamie’s assurance that it was not what it appeared. Room 435, Henry Buchanan’s office, the three encounter an elderly Damian Tryp, who wishes to explain why they are on the wrong side, why Singularity is trying to save the future of mankind, and how X-Factor’s activities “may well destroy everything. Have a seat. There’s water in the fridge if you’re thirsty.”

Origin: Damian Tryp
Death: Damian Tryp, Jr., Damian Tryp, Sr.

Damian Tryp -- the one from the future -- explains the fate of the world if X-Factor succeeds in restoring the mutants depowered by M-Day.

Years from now, Damian Tryp’s future is explored, where the powerless baseline of humanity are killed by the multitudinous mutants. Tryp explains how his elemental attunement has allowed him to exist at all points in his own lifeline, as a true “Multiple Man.” His present and past forms are physical enough, as time has caught up to them, while he remains as mutable as the future. His existence having become unstable, Tryp required, or will require, supporters to maintain his health by using technology. Unfortunately for Tryp, the lab where his followers were keeping him was attacked and destroyed by a mutant group, although Damian himself escaped to somewhere between then and now, not really existing in either. Tryp blames the sheer number of mutants in the future for his current condition, and blames X-Factor for their continued existence; X-Factor Unit 27 reports in, “Target Tryp located and believed terminated.”

In the present, Jamie refuses to believe Tryp’s story, Rahne attacks, and Tryp offers her a glimpse of his future. Tryp tosses them about, causing Jamie to produce a dupe, who runs off while Jamie calls him “gutless.”

At X-Factor, Layla orders several pizzas and a pair of bolt cutters, the latter for the favor of a horse race tip.

Outside S.I., high-speed winds whip up, prompting officers to move people away from the building. The cause of the weather shift, Damian Tryp, Sr., walks the halls of Singularity with his “son,” who explains that Alix Buchanan is hidden away, in case they need leverage. The senior Mr. Tryp decides that it’s time to take down X-Factor permanently, which Junior thinks is long overdue.

While poring over Singularity’s computer records, Rictor finds a list of names titled “Test Subjects,” some of which he recognizes as former mutants. Siryn, meanwhile, locates a weapon cache filled with high-powered armaments.

Elsewhere, Monet attends to the unconscious Rahne, while the eldest Tryp explains that in his time, X-Factor was instrumental in restoring the powers lost in the Decimation, which elevated them above the X-Men in the eyes of mutantkind. However, Tryp claims, this only served to shift the countdown to extinction to baseline humanity; “No more humans.” He taps Monet’s psychic powers with an energy charge, showing her and Jamie what he means, a world where warring superhuman powers wreak havoc, a world of utter chaos, “no world at all.” Tryp claims that the Decimation was part of the natural order, and that the virus Singularity is designing will kill all of the former mutants to prevent the recovery of their powers, to avert Tryp’s cataclysmic future. The alternative is that he and Singularity will destroy X-Factor. Monet confirms that Tryp is telling the truth, but Jamie won’t accept that those are the only two options, he won’t let people die. Tryp explains that people will die, regardless of whether Jamie lets them, starting with Alix Buchanan, who will be killed if X-Factor does not vacate Singularity immediately.

The van carrying Alix sits idle, as four pizza delivery trucks had collided non-fatally at an intersection, stopping traffic for blocks, while the van’s back doors lay ajar, with a pair of bolt cutters sitting beside.

Siryn and Rictor set out to join the bomb squad on the 18th floor, only to be ambushed by the younger Messrs Tryp. Senior disables Rictor, while Junior shoots a paralyzing dart in Siryn’s neck, as he had before beating her nearly to death. He tells Siryn that she should have taken his first warning, and she tells him that she now wears a kevlar collar, having learned from their last encounter, and thrusts him back with a sonic scream. Jamie arrives, telling the others to stand down, as they are leaving to keep Alix safe. The younger Tryp’s assure everyone that any “evidence” collected during the incursion would be wholly inadmissible, though they agree with Jamie to finish the battle another time.

Tryp’s Jr. and Sr. travel to the weapon cache, where they encounter a Madrox dupe rummaging through the ordnance. He explains that Jamie called him “Gutless” because he fooled Jamie, messed with him, which he does because he’s pretty messed up himself. He remembers Tryp, he remembers his killing of Jamie’s parents and that is why he is what he is today; Tryp asks what that is. The dupe explains that he’s the part of Jamie that compels him to do the unexpected. He’s the fly in the ointment, the spanner in the works. He’s unpredictable. He’s the X-Fac-- The dupe's statement is interrupted as he detonates a belt of explosives, blowing up the top floors of Singularity Investigations, along with himself and the younger Messrs Tryp.

Outside the building, Jamie feels his dupe’s death, and is startled by the flood of recovered memories, of Tryp killing his parents after telling them that Jamie wasn’t strictly a mutant. The dupe died feeling relieved he wouldn’t have to remember it anymore, and X-Factor heads for home.

At X-Factor Investigations, Layla retrieves an e-mail from Rictor with attached evidence of Singularity’s virus scheme and a reminder of his continued distrust of the “little freak.” Alix Buchanan sits with Layla, asking how she knew where she was and where her husband is, so Layla offers to get some milk to help with the shock. As Layla pours the milk into a glass, the eldest Tryp appears to her, explaining that he now realizes that she is the reason they’ve had so much trouble, not Rictor’s joining the group as they had previously thought. He wishes they had been partners, lamenting that they have instead been at odds. Now, he continues, his earlier selves are dead, and he only survived because of his being trapped between time. He warns Layla that they know each other now. “When chaos battles order, a balance is reached. When two chaotic forces battle… expect the unexpected.” Layla stands motionless before the refrigerator, the glass overflowing with milk, splashing onto the floor. She is alone.
