Two young boys, Gavin and Rich, are spending their Sunday afternoon at the New York library. When Rich stumbles on a novel, written by Carol Danvers, he shows it to his friend Gavin. However, Gavin isn’t to sure about Rich’s choice because they already read sci-fi the day before, but Rich is so taken by the woman, called Binary, on the cover, that Gavin gives in. Because Gavin has already read the book a couple of years ago, he searches for chapter ten in the book, which he believes is pretty cool. As Gavin starts to read, something strange happens with his words. The words seem to drift away, reaching other people, whose eyes turn totally white.

The story begins after Binary has left the Starjammers and flies alone through the galaxy. During her time alone, Binary realises that the things that make her human don’t count anymore and that she somehow finds comfort in the galaxy’s cold expanse. After several months, Binary comes across another living creature, which was only a voice at first, but after following the voice for a couple of days, she finally encounters the creature, who is the most beautiful thing Binary has ever seen. When the creature tries to talk to Binary, she can’t understand but luckily for her the creature can speak her language. The creature asks Binary’s help because the Keepers, a race to which the creature belongs, are dying. The Keeper tells her that the Keepers’ race is as old as the beginning of creation, and that the Keepers witnessed how a black cloud, also called the Swarm, became a side effect of creation. The Swarm, which is also called the anti-creation, can eat away all life from the universe if left unchecked. The Keepers saw it as their duty to contain the Swarm and keep the young universe safe. As millenia went by, the Keepers’ numbers dwindled until they weren’t with enough to contain the Swarm and so the Swarm escaped, endangering the very existence of the universe.

At the same time that Gavin is reading the chapter, Carol Danvers and Simon Williams are about to grab a bite to eat. While Carol is reading the menu, Simon tells her that it has been great seeing so much of her lately and that he thought it might be nice to spend some more time with her, but without the bad guys. Just as Simon is about to ask Carol something, their attention is drawn to something gigantic, which appeared in a blink of an eye in the middle of New York. As Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man fly towards the gigantic creature, they too hear the words that come from Gavin’s lips. Ms. Marvel immediately recognizes them from her own novel ‘Binary’. When Wonder Man, who hasn’t read the book, asks her what the creature is, Ms. Marvel explains to him that the creature is called the Keeper. Suddenly, while the two are investigating the solid creature, Wonder Man loses consciousness and starts to fall to the ground, but Ms. Marvel is able to catch him, after which she lands him on the pavement. After she lies the still unconscious Wonder Man on the ground, she tries to figure out what is happening. When she looks up, she notices that every person has lost consciousness. Suddenly, although Ms. Marvel still doesn’t understand why she isn’t affected, she notices that the words are coming from the library.

To her surprise, Ms. Marvel doesn’t enter the library but space itself. Rather quickly, Ms. Marvel is able to make verbal contact with the frightened Gavin. When Carol notices a green planet, she starts flying towards it, believing it to be Gavin, but Gavin warns her that she is flying in the wrong direction. When Ms. Marvel finally stops not far from the planet, she witnesses how the green planet is being destroyed by the Swarm. Unfortunately for Ms. Marvel, the Swarm notices her too and goes after her. As Carol is flying for her life, she asks Gavin how real the situation is but although the boy doesn’t know for sure, he thinks that he has killed the people in the library. The only thing that he does know, is that he was reading a book and that he was broadcasting it to his friend. When Gavin looked up after a while, he found himself in space. When Carol asks him to explain the broadcasting part, Gavin explains that people can see the stuff, that he is imagining while he reads a book out loud.

While Ms. Marvel tries to keep ahead of the Swarm, she notices that some things aren’t normal. She figures out that Gavin only makes those things real that are written in the book, the rest he leaves untouched. At that moment, Ms. Marvel wonders what would happen if Gavin started imagining things himself. When Ms. Marvel continues about what happens in her book, Gavin is surprised that she has read it. After Ms. Marvel reveals that she is the author of the book, she finally realises that she can’t be affected by Gavin’s power because she wrote it.

After Gavin reminds Carol that he hasn’t got the book in his hands anymore and therefor can’t read from it, she tells Gavin to try to remember the book. He remembers that Binary realized that the Swarm was a disease and that Binary went supernova to destroy it. Just before Ms. Marvel is being swallowed by the Swarm, she reminds Gavin that Binary isn’t there at the moment. Just in time, Gavin starts to imagine and to broadcast again, transforming Ms. Marvel into Binary. Now that Binary is part of the story again, Ms. Marvel starts to power up and tells Gavin that he has to imagine and to broadcast how Binary burns away the Swarm for good.

After the Swarm gets defeated, Ms. Marvel finds herself in the library, where she finally meets Gavin and his friend Rich, who didn’t get killed during the entire event. After the boys and Carol have checked on everybody else in the library, they leave the place. Once outside Ms. Marvel tells Gavin that she can’t let him walk away but that she wants to help him, although she doesn’t now how. After Gavin tells Ms. Marvel that he isn’t a mutant, she asks him how he can do the things he does. But just as he wants to answer her, agents of A.I.M. arrive at the spot to capture Gavin, but he doesn’t want his story to end badly. Gavin reveals that A.I.M. has experimented on him for about a month, after which he was able to escape. After Gavin broadcasts the A.I.M.-agents immediately to jail, he lets Ms. Marvel know how his power works exactly. Gavin explains to Carol that he just has to open up his mind and that the pictures then come to him. Before today, Gavin needed to read a book out loud to use his power, but now, thanks to Ms. Marvel, he knows that he can control it by just imagining things, which makes him alot stronger. Carol warns him that his power is very dangerous. When Carol starts to talk about a dear friend, who had similar powers, Gavin is suprised that Carol knew Wanda Maximoff. On her turn, Ms. Marvel is surprised of Gavin’s knowledge of what Wanda did to the world but apparantly A.I.M. knows everything about Wanda and is trying to make more Wandas, of which Gavin is one of them. When Carol asks him if there are more of him, Gavin informs her that he thinks that he is the only one that is still alive after receiving a pretty rough surgery.

Before Ms. Marvel gets the chance to talk some more, Gavin broadcasts her back to the diner, where she and Wonder Man were planning on grabbing a bite to eat. When Simon what happened after he blacked-out, Carol, asks Carol, who is in a state of panic after Gavin suddenly broadcasted her away, answers him that she either really helped or really screwed up. Scared about what happened, Carol looks for comfort in Simon’s arms.
