It has not been long since Mary Jane has left Peter’s apartment and ever since he has been trying to figure out if he is the real Peter Parker or a clone created by the Jackal. Unable to come to terms with his uncertainty he changes to Spider-Man and swings out over the town to visit the lab of Doctor Connors. He is unaware that he is being watched over a view-screen by someone who has been monitoring areas frequented by Spider-Man. He is about to start some experimentation to determine his identity when he is suddenly joined by Curt Connors. Connors offers to help and learns about the clone incident. Connors has some ideas as to how to figure out if he is the original or a clone and proceeds to conduct various procedures. After several hours the tests sap much of Spider-Man’s strength and he eventually falls asleep in Connor’s office.

Spider-Man is later woken up by someone calling for him and is surprised when he finds the Vulture on a neighboring rooftop calling him out to battle. Spider-Man jumps across to engage the Vulture but loses his grip in his weakened state. Manages to swing back up and onto the back of the Vulture forcing him into a wall where he mysteriously explodes leaving behind only feathers and smoke.

Still reeling from the outcome of his battle, Spider-Man is taken by surprise by a large fist of sand and falls painfully to the roof. Spider-Man fights briefly with the Sandman and eventually defeats him by dropping a water tower on him, but in the same way the Vulture was defeated the Sandman also explodes without a trace.

Spider-Man tries to return to Connors’ lab but is suddenly attacked by the Kingpin. After a short battle, Spider-Man lands a strong punch on the Kingpin and then he also explodes leaving only a wisp of smoke.

While standing in the alley trying to make sense of these attacks, Spencer Smyth then arrives in his recently repaired Spider-Slayer. Smythe grasp Spider-Man in the Slayer’s coils and begins to smash him against the walls of the alley. He explains that he had created the previous three opponents to tire Spider-Man and had equipped them with acid capsules so that they would self destruct if defeated. In his weakened condition, Spider-Man feels defeated but as he begins to think about Mary Jane and his love for her. His response is not a simple memory, but an emotional one and he realizes that he must be the real Peter Parker. A clone could not have been programmed to respond in such a way. With his strength momentarily renewed at this revelation, Spider-Man breaks free of the tentacle. He rips open the cockpit of the Slayer and renders Smythe unconscious with a single punch.

Spider-Man returns to the lab to find Connors asleep at his desk with the results of the test in front of him. He quietly takes to folder and rips it up realizing he no longer needs to read the results.

The "Spider-Slayer 'Vulture' Mark IV(a)", "Spider-Slayer 'Sandman' Mark IV(b)", and "Spider-Slayer 'Kingpin' Mark IV(c)" are possibly not truely Spider-Slayers as they were actually designed to fail and have been give sub-designations following the Spider-Slayer Mark IV.
