Death: Gambit
In the Danger Room, the X-Men are confronted with several of Spider-Man’s enemies. Just as the fight is about to begin, Wolverine asks who has written the, in his opinion, awful dialogues. After Storm admits that she wrote them, Nightcrawler confesses that he likes Storm’s stylized dialogue, but on his turn he wonders why they are fighting these creatures, seeing that they are not mutants. Marvel Girl reminds him that they are peacekeepers and that they have to be able to fight any kind of opponent. After Cyclops states that the exercise was Shadowcat’s idea, Iceman comments that she suggested it so that she can suck up to Spider-Man and tell him that she fought his enemies. But Shadowcat gets her revenge when she reveals that he goes on simultated dates with Rogue.
From up above, Angel and Professor X are watching the fight. When Angel asks the Professor if he can not help with anything else, the Professor tells him that he can not join the fight as his wings, which got seriously injured during Angel’s encounter with Mojo, have not healed yet. After Charles’ computer informs him of an incoming message from S.H.I.E.L.D., he asks Angel to leave.
When Nick Fury informs Charles of a prison escape, Charles immediately thinks of Magneto , but Nick is able to reassure Charles that it isn’t him. But Nick tells Charles that it was one of the others, who helped blow up the Brooklyn Bridge. While transferring the person to a detention facility, which could hold the Hulk, an incident took place. But Nick is in particulary worried about Rogue because she was the one who turned state’s evidence against the escaper. Therefor, Nick wants to send in a platoon to provide the Institute with additional security. At that point Charles has to admit that Rogue has left the X-Men, which infuriates Nick, because Charles was supposed to act as her guardian. But to top that, Charles has to confess that he has no idea where Rogue is.
Meanwhile at Fenris Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Rogue and Gambit are about to steal the Gem of Cyttorak. But Gambit is puzzled because Rogue is not interested in stealing the six million dollars in the vault as well. Although Rogue does not know what the Gem can do, she is certain that it is better if they took it out of the hands of the Von Struckers, who bought the Gem from an arms dealer called Black Tom Cassidy. On her way back to Gambit, the latter wants to know if Rogue is certain that she wants to spend her life by robbing the Von Struckers, realising that the two of them will never be able to dismantle the Von Struckers’ empire. But Rogue is certain, just as long as Gambit is at her side. At that point, Gambit has to admit that he feels guilty about him stealing her away from the X-Men, but Rogue wants to make up for all the awful stuff that she has done in the past, and that is something that she can not do while being with the X-Men.
After they change clothes, Rogue and Gambit head for the exit of the casino. When Gambit suggests to stick around and win some money from the Von Struckers, Rogue reveals that her father’s gambling cost her family their house, which was the reason why she ran away from home the first time around. Just as they are about to leave the casino, Gambit tells Rogue that they can visit her folks if she wants to, but it does not matter anymore to Rogue ever since she met Gambit.
Just as they step outside, the Juggernaut awaits them. When Gambit asks Rogue if she knows him, the Juggernaut explains to him that Rogue and he were partners until she left the Brotherhood of Mutants to join the X-Men. After Rogue tells him that she has left the X-Men, Gambit throws three charged cards at the Juggernaut but they do not hurt him. After the Juggernaut grabs and throws away Gambit, he lifts Rogue, making certain that he does not touch her bare skin. At that point, Rogue wants to know how he tracked her down. The Juggernaut reminds her that he retrieved his old helmet, which enables him to track down every person, who was ever branded by Weapon X.
When Rogue tells the Juggernaut that she does not want to hurt him, he laughs at her because he is convinced that she can not steal his powers as he is holding her by her gloves. But to his surprise, Rogue undoes one of her shoes, after which she makes contact with him with her foot. After a mere moment, the Juggernaut recovers and while he hits Rogue, he reminds her that his power is to be unstoppable. But having his powers, Rogue can take his punch and is even able to punch him against the doors of the casino. While the Juggernaut stands up again and starts to threaten the bystanders, Rogue wonders if Magneto has sent him to kill her. But instead of answering her, the Juggernaut declares his love for her. Meanwhile, Rogue has taken off one of her gloves, after which the Juggernaut grabs the bare hand. He wants her to remember the good times they had when they were partners. In their partnership, Rogue was the brains and he the muscle.
Just as Rogue passes out, after having absorbed too much of the Juggernaut, Gambit reappears and tells him to let her go before he kills her. When the Juggernaut tells Gambit that Rogue is only with him because he reminds her of the card shark her father was, Gambit informs him that he is done playing cards and throws the Gem of Cyttorak at him. After the charged Gem enters Juggernaut’s body and does something to him, the Juggernaut thanks Gambit for making him stronger. Now that Juggernaut feels invincible, he is convinced that nobody can come between him and Rogue. But just as he wants to pick her up, Gambit decides to continue to fight him. Using a bo staff, he jumps on top of the Juggernaut’s head. After a giant leap, the Juggernaut lands with a bang on his feet, which causes Gambit to fall off of him. But the Juggernaut does not realise, that Gambit had all the time that he needed to charge Juggernaut’s helmet. But after the helmet explodes, the Juggernaut is still unhurt which leaves Gambit no other choice than to use his cards again. When he throws them, it seems as though he misses his target, but the Juggernaut quickly comes to the realisation that Gambit was not aiming for him but for the building in construction behind him. After his cards hit the building on some crucial points, it starts to come down on them.
Rogue comes around just in time to see Gambit before everything falls on top of him. After the collapse Rogue uses her Juggernaut-powers to dig in the rubble as she knows that Gambit is still alive. When she finds him, he asks her if he got the Juggernaut. After she affirms this, she tells Gambit to hang on as help is about to arrive. But Gambit realises that he is about to die and begs his Marian to kiss him. As they share their last kiss, they are surrounded by pink air. After the kiss, Rogue holds the deceased Gambit in her arms.
Three days later, Bobby Drake receives a call from Rogue. Bobby, who knows that they found Gambit’s body in Vegas through the Professor, wants to know where she is. But Rogue only tells him that she is scared and tells him that this time it is not going away. Bobby notices that Rogue does not sound like herself anymore and wonders if she is okay. Rogue continues by telling him that she still can hear his voice as if he was standing right next to her. Just as Bobby asks her whose voice, Rogue tells him that her phone card is about to run out and says goodbye to him.
In the telephone booth, Rogue, who has Gambit’s eyes now, is holding a charged telephone card.
