At Muir Isle Tom Corsi and Sharon Friedlander are caught in an explosion, caused by David Haller, the mutant known as Legion. Physically they are okay, but their minds are completely gone. The next morning the Blackbird arrives and Moira MacTaggert informs Professor X about last evening’s events. In the Centre he gets re-acquainted with his former lover Gabrielle Haller, who asks him for help with her son. Professor X is unaware of the fact that David Haller is his son. Telepathically he reaches into David’s mind, where he stumbles upon a psi-wall and the face of a young Arab appears. Immediately after that, he gets hurled out of David’s mind. At night Wolfsbane visits her foster mother, Moira MacTaggert, in the lab. Both get caught into a similar explosion as the first one.

Everyone is catching up with Professor X and Jack Wayne. Finally they find the Arab, Jemail Karami (who is actually one of the terrorists reborn in David’s head). Mirage and Professor X strike at him with a psychic attack and learn that most of the things they’ve encountered in David’s head are illusions. As they enter the dome, they find broken crystals as well as repaired ones. Since only telepaths can repair these crystals, Professor X isn’t so sure of the bad intentions of Jemail. But before he can act, he gets struck down by an unknown force. Dani immediately takes action and works together with Jack Wayne and Jemail to restore order to David’s inner universe and helps returning everyone to their rightful bodies. The unknown force that has felled the Professor is the Beyonder (from Secret Wars).

The New Mutants are chasing Karma to Madripoor. Karma has turned evil and the New Mutants think that Professor X knew that Karma wasn’t dead. In Madripoor, Karma possesses all of them, except for Magik, Mirage and Warlock. Dani asks Illyana to teleport her to Karma’s other hideout in Cairo. They arrive in the far past of Cairo. There they get help from Ashake, an ancestor of Storm, who sends them to the future with a spell. Now they arrive in the far future, where they learn that the other New Mutants have become cruel, evil mutants. Luckily the next teleportation attempt of Magik brings them to the present. In their absence Warlock has found Storm, who has travelled through Africa.

The New Mutants are Karma’s slaves and she shows them off in her nightclub in Cairo. Through the mind link with Mirage, Wolfsbane breaks free from Karma’s possession. Later, the “free” New Mutants are attacked by the possessed New Mutants, and when Magik betrays them, nearly everybody is delivered to Karma. This is all part of Magik’s plan, but Warlock, the only other New Mutant still free, doesn’t believe her anymore, thanks to the lying S’ym.

Warlock attacks Magik, because he thinks she has switched sides. Magik succeeds in convincing Warlock that she has not defected. Through looking in a scrying pool and teleporting to the past, they realise that Amahl Farouk, a.k.a. Shadow King, has taken over Karma. Warlock disguises as Magik, and misleads Karma. Through this action Magik succeeds in teleporting all New Mutants and Storm to Limbo, freeing them of Karma’s possession. Together as a team, they fight Karma, and force the Shadow King to leave Karma’s body. However he possesses Cypher instead. The now free Karma fights him with her sheer willpower and succeeds in driving the Shadow King away to the Astral Plane. At the end Storm proposes a vacation to them all.

Magneto welcomes the New Mutants to the X-Mansion as their new headmaster. Since not all New Mutants react in a positive way on the news, Magneto sets up a Danger Room practice to blow off steam. Later that evening in Harry’s Hideout, the New Mutants discuss the events, only Dani is very quiet and sad. She still has to learn to cope with the fact that she is now a Valkyrie, a chooser of the slain. When she leaves alone, three guys are following and attacking her. Brightwind, her winged steed from Asgard, flies in and drives the men away. When Dani and Brightwind return to the mansion, Magneto searches the attackers and punishes them in a severe way. The other New Mutants have followed him and are impressed by his performance.

Sunspot is having a test in the Danger Room, assisted by Tom Corsi and Sharon Friedlander. Magneto challenges Sunspot by making the test much heavier, much to the dismay of Sharon who thinks this is unnecessary. Sunspot passes the test and angrily asks Magneto what reason there is for all this. He doesn’t want to become an X-man; he just wants to be left alone. Sharon and Magneto are discussing Sunspot’s state of mind. Magneto thinks that Sunspot’s alienation and despair is coming from the boy’s encounter with the Beyonder, a being that can do anything to anyone and anything. It seems that Magneto is right, because Roberto is crying in the locker room about his dead girlfriend and the Beyonder.

Kitty Pryde is waiting in the New York Public Library for her friend Illyana Rasputin (Magik). Illyana is running late but on her way in the subway, as suddenly the Beyonder comes looking for her specifically. He tells her that he brings her joy, the dawn of a new age. llyana explains she’s not interested, but the Beyonder grasps her soul sword and restores the natural order within her that once was and asks the same has to be done for him. The subway car with Illyana in it becomes airborne and takes course to Westchester. The Beyonder thinks that this is best, that they should be led along the path of glory by one of their own. Back at the library Illyana’s soul sword appears in front of Kitty Pryde. As she takes the sword, the eldritch armour and the beatrix medaillon appear on her. Also demons arise all over the place and Kitty has to fight them with the sword.

At the mansion the New Mutants are enjoying a swim in the pool. Also here a demon appears, but Warlock easily kills it. During the fight they lost track of Cannonball. In the sky Cannonball notices Illyana and the subway car. Illyana invites him in, takes his hand and teaches him what she has learned. As the subway car lands as well Cannonball as Magik explain that something wonderful has happened to them. They explain that the Beyonder just wants to help them; he is kind of overlord and overmind combined. Illyana explains she was evil, but the Beyonder has cured her; she’s now the girl she should have been; he didn’t brainwash her, but he showed her a small part of what he is and what they might be. She asks the others to take her hand and let her show them. As all the others refuse, Cannonball takes drastic measures and wants to drag Magma into the subway car. Luckily Warlock prevents this. Unfortunately Magik’s attention is now on Warlock, who she is trying to push in the subway. Suddenly a big, vile demon appears with Kitty Pryde hanging from its neck. The demon rants that Kitty was too inexperienced and with her lifesoul and one more the gateway shall at last be open. The demon is immune to the New Mutants’ powers. Then the demon forms the fourth blood stone out of the Guardian’s (Kitty Pryde) essence. Dani tries to reason with Illyana saying that Kitty is getting slaughtered by the demon and that Illyana has to do something. Illyana refused at first, but after some more convincing from Dani’s side, Illyana takes back her soul sword, her magic and all the evil that goes with it. She defeats the demon and sends him back to his own dimension, thus saving Kitty. As Kitty comes by she says to Illyana that she wasn’t worried, because she knew that Illyana would save the day.
