Stevie Hunter is giving Shan (Karma) a hair make-over while the other New Mutants are watching. Roberto (Sunspot) and Dani (Psyche) are making jokes, when suddenly Dani’s power interfaces with Shan’s memories. Now everyone sees how Shan’s mother and father were killed and how Shan suffered an even worse fate while she protected her younger siblings. Enraged she attacks Dani. Stopped by the others, she still wants Dani to suffer for what she did unintentionally. Stevie sends Dani and the others away, so she can comfort Shan.
Dani wanders around and gets lost in the big mansion. She arrives in the wing where the X-men live. There she looks at some photo’s of them and wonders what has happened to them, because Professor X never talks about them. In the attic she gives water to Storm’s plants, and asks herself if Shan is still mad at her. Suddenly a telepathic image of the Professor calls her to the Danger Room for the first training session.
In London Moira MacTaggert and Illyana Rasputin are visiting Gabrielle Haller to discuss the fate of her autistic son, who she believes is a very powerful mutant. Moira is her last hope. Moira is flattered, but explains that her work is theoretical in nature and that Charles Xavier is the man who can help her out. Gabrielle insists on leaving Charles out of this, because he is the boy’s father.
Professor X welcomes the New Mutants to the Danger Room. Roberto asks him if they are to become the new X-men. The Professor snaps at him, that this is not his intention and the X-men chapter of his life is ended, forever. He shows them the possibilities of the Danger Room, from a simple gymnasium mode to a very dangerous, hostile environment. Their first task is a simple one, cross the room to the exit. Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Sunspot and Karma fail the task. When it is Psyche’s turn, she panics and runs away, terrified.
Rahne (Wolfsbane) searches and finds Dani on her own, somewhere on the estate grounds. Rahne is very comforted by her wolf-powers, while Dani thinks that hers are a plague. The other New Mutants and Stevie Hunter are inviting them to go the city, but Dani refuses and stays behind on her own. The others are watched by a couple of agents in a car, who were instructed by Henry Peter Gyrich.
Dani returns to the mansion, where she activates the Danger Room for her specific scenario. She succeeds in her task of reaching the exit. She has passed the test. However, outside she’s zapped and when she comes by, she’s again in the Danger Room in the very hostile environment, the Professor showed before.

Dani runs for her life in the Danger Room, where she is chased by a big monster. Climbing atop of a mountain, she’s welcomed by a Brood Queen. The Queen tells her she is too dangerous and has to die. Dani falls down and crashes on the floor.
The other New Mutants are in Salem Center Mall, making acquaintances with some other local children. They are watched on computer screens by agents and staff of Project Wide-Awake. Henry Peter Gyrich and Sebastian Shaw (Black King) are planning on attacking the New Mutants with their new breed of Sentinels. In the Mall, Stevie Hunter is molested by Colonel Michael Rossi, who is warning her that the New Mutants are in grave danger.
The New Mutants are arrested by federal agents and asked to follow them. Michael Rossi and Stevie Hunter are ordering the agents to stand still. When the agents attack, the New Mutants enter the frail with their powers. Shortly thereafter, the agents have surrendered. As a counter action Project Wide-Awake releases his Sentinels on the mutants. First Michael Rossi is gassed unconscious; one of the Sentinels freezes Sam and flies away. Roberto tears a head of another one. Shan takes possession of Sam’s mind and flies higher than he would ever do consciously. The third Sentinel is targeting Shan, but before he can act, the Sentinel is distracted by Michael Rossi. Sam wakes up and “cannonballs” towards Earth with the Sentinel on his tail and lets him crash right on top of the other. Shan possesses the leader of the agents and forces him to confess to the local authorities.
When the New Mutants return to the Mansion they find a very scared Psyche in the Danger Room. Stevie is very suspicious when she hears Dani’s tale, and thinks the only one who could have passed the security system of the Danger Room is Charles Xavier. In his study an astral image of a young Brood Queen hoovers above Xavier.

Dani gets haunted by nightmares where a monster kills her friends. She gets attacked by the monster and stabs him. The New Mutants and Professor X, alarmed by her screaming, comfort her and she tries to sleep again. However when she looks at her knife, she sees real blood on it. She runs to the Professor to tell him, but overhears him talking to Moira MacTaggert on the phone. He tells Moira that Dani is suffering from psychopathic tendencies, extreme paranoia and schizophrenia. Disillusioned she falls down. On Muir Isle Moira MacTaggert strongly disagrees with Xavier. When she hangs up the phone she confides Sean (Banshee) in her thoughts; that all is not right with Professor X.
Dani reveals to Shan what Professor X thinks of her present condition. Shan possesses Roberto, Sam and Rahne to meet them in the boat house. When Dani tells them the same thing, Sam refuses to believe her. He opens the door and is shocked to see that the landscape has changed into something alien. Trough the seemingly unaffected underground tunnels they try to make their way back to the mansion. As they open the door, Dani gets captured by the Brood Queen. The others manage to free her from the Brood Queen’s gripe. When they look further into the tunnel, they see it has changed into something of organic matter. Dani is complaining she has a terrible headache. As they wander further, they are attacked again, but this time the Brood Queen takes Dani. Dani screams and passes out.
Dani wakes up and finds herself in a cocoon. The Brood Queen reveals to her that she and her friends are going to be implanted with royal eggs, so they all become Brood Queens. Dani’s headache is taking a turn for the worse. As the Brood Queen rants on, Dani finally comprehends that all the landscapes, monsters and such are created with her powers. As the other New Mutants find them, Dani yells to knock her out in stead of the Brood Queen. Sam knocks her out and everything turns back to normal. Later Roberto comforts Dani that they are a team and will always be there for one another. In the night sky they see a falling star…

First Appearance: Peter Bristow
Shan witnesses that Stevie Hunter receives vague threatening telephone calls. The other New Mutants are playing in the snow outside of the mansion. They get summoned by Professor Xavier to come into the mansion. En route they speak to Lilandra, Xavier’s girlfriend. Professor X explains to the New Mutants that the decision he has made to open the doors of the school, had been done under false pretensions, as he was severely influenced by the Brood Queen. Considering everything that’s happened, he leaves them a choice to stay or leave. They all decide to stay at the Mansion and as his students. Shan tells them that Stevie Hunter is harassed by telephone by an unknown person. The New Mutants decide to help her trace the stalker, with the guidance of Professor X.
In Stevie’s apartment they place a phone tracer that can track any incoming call to its source. When the stalker rings again, Stevie and the New Mutants follow the trail to the Spring Mixer Dance, for which they were also invited. There are a lot of people inside, so they decide that Dani stays in touch with Rahne through their psychic animal rapport. Outside, Rahne (in her wolf form) sees somebody’s skin heat pattern change the moment Stevie and the New Mutants walk in. Dani turns immediately to Peter Bristow, another pupil of Stevie. Peter Bristow flees in a car, followed by the New Mutants. After nearly killing some innocent bystanders, he gets captured. Stevie asks him why he hates her so much, that he is stalking her. Dani uses her power to show Peter’s greatest desire, e.g. kissing Stevie Hunter, and when she reaches deeper looking for reasons, she finds that his parents are punishing hum with a whip. Peter jumps towards Dani, trying to attack her for what she just did, but Shan possesses him in time. They all see scars on his back, some from years old, and Peter yells at Stevie that she does not love him. His parents have told him that if you love someone, you need to punish him. As Stevie did not, he wanted to pay her back. Peter Bristow is transferred to the Child Welfare Bureau.

Due to excruciating pain in his limbs, Professor X has lost contact with the New Mutants, who are away on a well deserved trip to the Fair. Present at the fair is also half of Team America. Roberto is trying to score some autographs of R.R. Reddy, Cowboy and El Lobo; the last one is not too eager to provide this and behaves kind of arrogant. From a distance Viper is observing Team America with a pair of binoculars. In the middle of Team America’s stunt show, something blows up in their faces. Some goons come running towards them. The New Mutants don’t hesitate and attack the goons. Team America is entering the fight on their motor cycles. The goons are getting the worst of it. From above Viper and the Silver Samurai, the actual leaders of the goons, are watching the fight and are disappointed that their attack has not flushed out the Dark Rider, who is the guardian angel of Team America. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Dark Rider appears on a motor cycle and heads straight for the Silver Samurai. With the utmost ease the Silver Samurai defeats the Black Rider, by letting the bike crash, leaving him unconscious on the ground. The Silver Samurai sees it’s a girl in the Black Rider-suit, it is Danielle Moonstar. Roberto and Rahne come running towards them, but are too late, because the Silver Samurai activates his teleportation ring and is gone, with Dani.
Dani Moonstar awakes in a room with a motor bike in it; she remembers nothing after Team America being attacked. Big wheels with spikes are rolling with enormous speed towards her; she’s barely able to dodge them. As one of the wheels turns, she nearly gets killed. Suddenly the Silver Samurai enters the room and asks her to follow. Viper is questioning her about her being the Dark Rider, while now she isn’t even able to ride a motor cycle. She asks what her connection is to Team America. Dani is not able to answer Viper’s questions.
Professor X, Lilandra and Michael Rossi are doing some research on what happened, helped by the info from the New Mutants. After using Cerebro, Professor X seems to have found something. In Washington, Viper and the Silver Samurai are blackmailing Team America into stealing a certain object from an impregnable fortress in the Sierra Madre Mountains or they will kill Dani. After Viper has left, Professor X comes knocking on their door. He tells them that Team America are mutants, or better a Projecting Gestalt. It means that in moments of extreme danger, anyone of them can project the combined abilities of the team onto another, creating an entity known as the Black Rider. This has now happened to Dani. Professor X offers to help Team America before someone else gets hurt in the process. The New Mutants feel betrayed, because Professor X will not directly save Dani, and they decide to rescue her on their own.

Death: Karma
The New Mutants are ambushing Karma’s uncle, General Nguyen Ngoc Coy. Easily they overthrow his body guards and Karma possesses him. She releases him when he’s on top of the building and pressures him to reveal Viper’s hiding place. The General calls Karma’s bluff and refuses to tell her anything. He agrees to provide some information if Karma will service him for one year, regardless. Karma accepts.
Team America is in New Mexico, starting with Viper’s mission to steal a crystal from AIM laboratories. R.U. Reddy en El Lobo are racing each other, resulting in the fall of El Lobo. A furious astral image of Professor X is appearing and screams in their minds that they’re foolish men who are playing games at the expense of the life of a young girl. Honcho agrees with the Professor and also gets angry with R.U. Reddy and El Lobo. Midway between Team America and the New Mutants, Professor X shares his concerns with Lilandra. He is not able to switch his thoughts and help quickly between Team America and the New Mutants, leaving the latter nearly unsupervised.
Team America is in Black Mesa, El Lobo and R.U. Reddy have blazed the trail for the others and have earned a rest. Wrench and Honcho are going inside AIM laboratories to steal the crystal. After knocking down some AIM guards and switching clothes, they are going straight for the crystal. As Wrench grabs it, the building explodes and Professor X is struck down by a savage psychic attack.
In Big Sur, Karma leads the rescue of Dani. A strange voice is talking in her head, and it is not Professor X, but someone far more vicious. The first guards the New Mutants encounter are very easily defeated. In Dani’s cell, some guards are trying to eliminate her; she attacks them with their greatest fear and escapes. She finds Wolfsbane on her path, bleeding on the ground; she is slain by the Silver Samurai, who is aiming at her now.
The members of Team America are fleeing on their motor cycles, chased by AIM. Team America knows they will not escape them as sooner or later they are caught. Then El Lobo is calling on the Black Rider to aid them. He has now become the Black Rider and defeats the AIM guards. He lands on the back of Cowboy’s motor cycle, as more AIM guards arrive. The both of them decide to stay and fight, leaving the other members a chance to escape.
As the Silver Samurai is going for the killing blow on Dani, Cannonball and Sunspot are rescuing her by blasting him away. The Silver Samurai activates his ring and teleports away. Viper and Karma are fighting; Karma nearly succeeds in possessing her, as the Silver Samurai comes in, oversees the situation and strikes down Viper. The villains both teleport away.
In the Blackbird, at Colorado River, the escaped members of Team America are reviving Professor X and Lilandra, who were still unconscious of the psychic attack. Honcho asks the Professor where his team mates are. He assures him that they are underway. In Big Sur the New Mutants reunite with their team mate Psyche. When Professor X mentally contacts the New Mutants, Karma sees his face changing and hears another psychic entity telling her that she will be his forever. The Silver Samurai blows up the building, seemingly killing off the New Mutants. The only casualty will be Karma (off panel).

After the explosion, only Karma is missing, presumed dead. The New Mutants are devastated and have searched for days. Standing at the seaside, Roberto takes Shan’s apparent death very hard. Professor X has asked the other New Mutants to summon him. Back at the camp, the X-men are helping out with the search party for Karma. Roberto asks the Professor if there is any news about Shan. The Professor response is negative, but he replies that a visitor has arrived for Sunspot. It is his mother who invites him and the other New Mutants to join her on an expedition to the Amazon River. Subsequently Roberto and the Professor have a big argument about the New Mutants’ staying or leaving the scene. Roberto blames the Professor for being too occupied at the time with Team America, in stead of helping them rescue Dani. Roberto leaves in anger with the threat of quitting the New Mutants. Professor X believes that Karma is still alive and her disappearance has something to do with the very powerful psychic presence he sensed. He wants to have the New Mutants out of harm’s way and deliberately does not inform the New Mutants about the fact that Karma is probably still alive somewhere…
The New Mutants are leaving with Nina DaCosta (Roberto’s mother) to Rio de Janeiro. They arrive in one of the largest, most elegant mansions at Ipanema, owned by Emmanuel DaCosta (Roberto’s father). At 20:00 hours the New Mutants are dining with Roberto’s parents in the palace. Uncomfortably they witness the bickering at each other of Sunspot’s parents. The next morning they attend the carnival in Rio. First they stop at a costumes shop, where they all search for a costume that’s suits well with their personality. When Nina DaCosta is called away by the owner of the shop, she gets kidnapped by some Hellfire Club goons. As the New Mutants try to save her, they are beaten by Axe. Wolfsbane sees how easily her team mates are defeated, and she runs away.
As the other New Mutants regroup, Dani receives a mind call from Rahne, who is following Axe and the other Hellfire Club kidnappers. The other New Mutants follow Rahne through the girls’ psychic rapport. Rahne mentions that Roberto’s mother is not in danger, but still the New Mutants decide to take action Magnum P.I.-style. First Wolfsbane gives a big wolf’s howl outside; this is getting on the nerves of the Hellfire Club goons. They are searching the place, but are taken out one by one by Psyche and her lively illusions of their greatest terrors. Sunspot manages to rescue his mother by defeating Axe, this time. A couple of days later Nina DaCosta and the New Mutants are departing for the Amazon jungle, only to be watched by Emmanuel DaCosta and Sebastian Shaw (the Black King of the Hellfire Club).

The New Mutants are accompanying Nina DaCosta on an expedition to the Amazon Jungle. Having some downtime in the jungle, they accidentally stumble upon a group of Native women, the Amazons. After a quick fight, started by the latter, they capture one of them. Castro, a boat crew member, who is a secret operative of the Hellfire Club and works for Sunspot’s father, is beating the girl up. As Wolfsbane finds out what he’s doing, she gets knocked unconscious. When she comes by, she sees that the boat is floating off stream towards a big waterfall. A crash cannot be prevented. In the water, the captured Amazon girl seems to be White in stead of Indian, and she speaks fluent English. On shore, they are taken prisoner by a Roman Legion to become slaves of Imperial Rome.

The New Mutants and Amara Aquilla have been taken prisoner by Roman Legionnaires in the middle of the Amazon Jungle. They are brought to Nova Roma, a hidden city in the Andes, where time has stood still on ancient Rome. Sunspot and Cannonball are brought to the Gladiators, where they are drugged and prepared for battle in the Arena. Psyche, Wolfsbane and Amara are brought to the House of Women, also drugged and made beautiful to be sold at the Slave Market. In the Arena, the boys win all battles easily, thanks to their mutant powers and the forced drug. When they turn on each other, the girls come to their aid with their mutant powers. People are shouting that they are children of Selene, the Black Priestess. Senator Gallio convinces the audience that the New Mutants are children of Gods and therefore have to be glorified.

After their success in the arena, the New Mutants are hailed in as gods by the people of Nova Roma. During the procession Senator Marcus Gallio is giving evil looks in the direction of Senator Lucius Aquilla, not going unnoticed by Sam. The New Mutants are staying in the palace of Senator Marcus Gallio. They are pampered in comfort and luxury, served by slaves. After supper Senator Marcus Gallio reveals to the New Mutants his relationship with Amara’s father, Senator Lucius Aquilla, which is not very good, because Aquilla is Plebian, while he himself is Patrician. Rahne intends to think his story is true, while Sam does not believe a word of it. Roberto is wandering away, thinking of the three women he lost in a short time, first his girlfriend Juliana Sandoval, later Shan (Karma) and now his mother, probably drowned in the Amazon. As he looks through the window, he thinks he sees his mother as a captive; he runs outside but is stopped by the palace guards, who will not let him pass. It seems that they are prisoners of Senator Gallio now. At night Dani escapes to investigate, but she is drugged and taken away by forces unknown. Rahne and Roberto, awaiting Dani’s return, are ambushed by Castro, who fires a gun at them. The bullet hits Roberto, who falls through the window, only to be rescued by Sam. Rahne catches the assassin Castro. After being questioned by Senator Gallio he spills out that Senator Aquilla has sent him to kill the New Mutants.
In an underground cave Psyche wakes up and finds herself imprisoned, together with Amara Aquilla and another girl. Guards are leading them to the sanctuary of The Cult of Fire, where they are to be sacrificed. Selene (wife of Marcus Gallio), as the Cult’s Black Priestess, materializes and summons the unnamed girl. The unnamed girl is thrown into a lava pit by Selene, who absorbs her life energy. Selene reveals that she is a goddess, who has walked this earth since the dawn of history.
The other New Mutants and Senator Gallio’s troops are invading the estate of Amara’s father Lucius Aquilla. Sam is having doubts because this attack is a little too convenient and he takes Sunspot out of the battle. He shares his concerns with Roberto and they are just in time to rescue Senator Aquilla from certain death. They stand up against the troops of Senator Gallio, telling them that Aquilla is their prisoner. Much to the chagrin of Senator Gallio, who threatens Senator Aquilla in Latin, believing that Roberto and Sam cannot speak the language. Roberto does speak Latin and knows the whole truth now, realising they have made a terrible mistake. In the cave Amara stands above the lava on a board, while Dani tries to break free of Selene’s spell. In the fight that follows Amara is thrown into the pool of lava by Selene. Without a sound Amara disappears in the lava. Suddenly Nova Roma is struck by an earthquake. In the cave Amara is reborn from the lava and towers high above Selene, wanting to have vengeance.

Death: Senator Marcus Gallio
Amara is reborn from her fall into the lava, she rises out of it and attacks Selene with her new mutant powers, determined to stop her reign of terror. During her counter attack Selene reveals she can bring all things inanimate to life; two stone monsters attack Amara and she falls down. Selene turns her attention to Dani, who lies on the ground. Dani is shocked because of what happened to Amara and believes that Amara was as surprised as she was. Selene has grown old because of the fighting, it costs her her youth. She tells Dani this is easily rectified and with her powers she brings her loyal disciples to death, one after one falling into the hot lava. Their life forces restore Selene’s youth. She enthrals Dani with her powers, trying to make Dani her apprentice. Dani is no match for Selene’s years of practice, but still finds the strength to stand up against her. Luckily Amara shows up again and covers Selene in burning lava. Dani runs away from the heath that Amara is generating, but she doesn’t succeed and falls back. With her powers she reveals what Amara is most afraid of; killing Dani with her new powers. As the two girls try to help each other, Selene attacks Amara again and drains her life energy.
Meanwhile Amara’s father and his guards are captives of Senator Gallio. The two senators argue with each other over Rome, but Senator Aquilla is silenced and taken away by a centurion. Roberto thinks he sees his mother among the prisoners. Disguised as a guard, he enters the prison to find his mother in chains, with Castro by her side. Castro seems to be operating for The Hellfire Club. He strikes Castro down. From his mother, Sunspot finds out more details of what’s really going on in Nova Roma. His mother acknowledges also that his father has ties into all of this. The two of them are teaming up with Aquilla’s men and the Amazones to start an assault on the palace of Senator Gallio. In the palace Senator Gallio is celebrating his victory over Senator Aquilla, who kneels before him, evidently heavily whipped and tortured. Rahne and Sam are both having severe doubts about the Senator. Suddenly Amara appears through the floor in her mutant form. She tells that the earth has given her her life back, but she is still too weak to defend her father. Sunspot and his mother, accompanied by Aquilla’s legionnaires and the Amazons are entering the palace, causing heavy fighting. Sam and Rahne soon side with them. In the final fight in the palace, Senator Aquilla kills Senator Gallio in a duel.
The New Mutants learn from Amara, that Psyche is in the hands of Selene, who is trying to make Dani her apprentice. The New Mutants together with Amara go and search for Dani. They are covered in stone, but manage to break out of it. They find Dani hanging at some sort of altar, where she is clearly to become changed into an image of Selene. The New Mutants battle fiercely for the life of Dani, and in the end their combined efforts do the trick. Selene gets buried into a pool of lava, hidden under piles of rock. When the battle is over, Amara asks the others what’s to become of her, will she be like them or like Selene?

Emmanuel DaCosta enters his office to find his son Roberto waiting for him in his chair. Roberto confronts his father with everything what’s happened to him, his mother, the New Mutants and the citizens of Nova Roma in the Amazonian Jungle. They have a discussion about his father being poor when he was young, on the contrary to Roberto who never had a poor day in his life. The temperaments of the two men heat up and Roberto asks if his father even cares about him, what if the attempt at his life from the assassin Castro had succeeded? His father doesn’t appreciate his tone and raises his hand. That’s when Roberto changes into Sunspot and threatens his father that he and the New Mutants will do everything to prevent him from exploiting the land of Nova Roma. His father says that if Roberto leaves his office now, he will not have a son anymore. Roberto leaves with the remark that from now on he is half an orphan. Emmanuel calls Sebastian Shaw and accepts his invitation to join the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club.
Dani and Amara are at the beach, enjoying the sun, the sea and the sights. Amara thinks of her leaving Nova Roma. When she had refused to leave her father, her power had acted up triggered from her emotions. Her father had comforted her and both agreed it was better for her to join the New Mutants back to Westchester, where people were better equipped to help her. At the beach a few fellows are harassing Amara, one even steals a kiss. The Nova Roman gets so furious that she loses control of her powers and a small volcano appears, erupting lava. In the confusion among the beach guests Dani and Amara lose each other.
Rahne is in a church, praying for forgiveness for what almost happened to Amara and her father. Because Sam is in love and Dani spends quite some time with Amara, she’s afraid that her friends love her more when she is Wolfsbane than when she is just Rahne. Suddenly Sam comes running in, shouting they need her wolf powers, because Amara is missing. Amara is lost in Rio de Janeiro. Not used to the city life, she runs around uncontrollably, leaving small volcanos and small tremors of earthquakes in her wake. The New Mutants are following her close, but haven’t found her yet. Since she is not used to the strong direct sun, she passes out on the street, due to sunstroke. Some street children find her and bring her to Flor, their sister. That’s where the New Mutants finally locate her. In her delirium Amara is building up for a major earthquake and a volcano is already appearing in the harbour. The New Mutants know there is no time to lose. Sam and Roberto fly away and fetch a truck full of ice to cool her off and save Rio.

Stevie Hunter is giving Shan (Karma) a hair make-over while the other New Mutants are watching. Roberto (Sunspot) and Dani (Psyche) are making jokes, when suddenly Dani’s power interfaces with Shan’s memories. Now everyone sees how Shan’s mother and father were killed and how Shan suffered an even worse fate while she protected her younger siblings. Enraged she attacks Dani. Stopped by the others, she still wants Dani to suffer for what she did unintentionally. Stevie sends Dani and the others away, so she can comfort Shan.
Dani wanders around and gets lost in the big mansion. She arrives in the wing where the X-men live. There she looks at some photo’s of them and wonders what has happened to them, because Professor X never talks about them. In the attic she gives water to Storm’s plants, and asks herself if Shan is still mad at her. Suddenly a telepathic image of the Professor calls her to the Danger Room for the first training session.
In London Moira MacTaggert and Illyana Rasputin are visiting Gabrielle Haller to discuss the fate of her autistic son, who she believes is a very powerful mutant. Moira is her last hope. Moira is flattered, but explains that her work is theoretical in nature and that Charles Xavier is the man who can help her out. Gabrielle insists on leaving Charles out of this, because he is the boy’s father.
Professor X welcomes the New Mutants to the Danger Room. Roberto asks him if they are to become the new X-men. The Professor snaps at him, that this is not his intention and the X-men chapter of his life is ended, forever. He shows them the possibilities of the Danger Room, from a simple gymnasium mode to a very dangerous, hostile environment. Their first task is a simple one, cross the room to the exit. Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Sunspot and Karma fail the task. When it is Psyche’s turn, she panics and runs away, terrified.
Rahne (Wolfsbane) searches and finds Dani on her own, somewhere on the estate grounds. Rahne is very comforted by her wolf-powers, while Dani thinks that hers are a plague. The other New Mutants and Stevie Hunter are inviting them to go the city, but Dani refuses and stays behind on her own. The others are watched by a couple of agents in a car, who were instructed by Henry Peter Gyrich.
Dani returns to the mansion, where she activates the Danger Room for her specific scenario. She succeeds in her task of reaching the exit. She has passed the test. However, outside she’s zapped and when she comes by, she’s again in the Danger Room in the very hostile environment, the Professor showed before.

Dani runs for her life in the Danger Room, where she is chased by a big monster. Climbing atop of a mountain, she’s welcomed by a Brood Queen. The Queen tells her she is too dangerous and has to die. Dani falls down and crashes on the floor.
The other New Mutants are in Salem Center Mall, making acquaintances with some other local children. They are watched on computer screens by agents and staff of Project Wide-Awake. Henry Peter Gyrich and Sebastian Shaw (Black King) are planning on attacking the New Mutants with their new breed of Sentinels. In the Mall, Stevie Hunter is molested by Colonel Michael Rossi, who is warning her that the New Mutants are in grave danger.
The New Mutants are arrested by federal agents and asked to follow them. Michael Rossi and Stevie Hunter are ordering the agents to stand still. When the agents attack, the New Mutants enter the frail with their powers. Shortly thereafter, the agents have surrendered. As a counter action Project Wide-Awake releases his Sentinels on the mutants. First Michael Rossi is gassed unconscious; one of the Sentinels freezes Sam and flies away. Roberto tears a head of another one. Shan takes possession of Sam’s mind and flies higher than he would ever do consciously. The third Sentinel is targeting Shan, but before he can act, the Sentinel is distracted by Michael Rossi. Sam wakes up and “cannonballs” towards Earth with the Sentinel on his tail and lets him crash right on top of the other. Shan possesses the leader of the agents and forces him to confess to the local authorities.
When the New Mutants return to the Mansion they find a very scared Psyche in the Danger Room. Stevie is very suspicious when she hears Dani’s tale, and thinks the only one who could have passed the security system of the Danger Room is Charles Xavier. In his study an astral image of a young Brood Queen hoovers above Xavier.

Dani gets haunted by nightmares where a monster kills her friends. She gets attacked by the monster and stabs him. The New Mutants and Professor X, alarmed by her screaming, comfort her and she tries to sleep again. However when she looks at her knife, she sees real blood on it. She runs to the Professor to tell him, but overhears him talking to Moira MacTaggert on the phone. He tells Moira that Dani is suffering from psychopathic tendencies, extreme paranoia and schizophrenia. Disillusioned she falls down. On Muir Isle Moira MacTaggert strongly disagrees with Xavier. When she hangs up the phone she confides Sean (Banshee) in her thoughts; that all is not right with Professor X.
Dani reveals to Shan what Professor X thinks of her present condition. Shan possesses Roberto, Sam and Rahne to meet them in the boat house. When Dani tells them the same thing, Sam refuses to believe her. He opens the door and is shocked to see that the landscape has changed into something alien. Trough the seemingly unaffected underground tunnels they try to make their way back to the mansion. As they open the door, Dani gets captured by the Brood Queen. The others manage to free her from the Brood Queen’s gripe. When they look further into the tunnel, they see it has changed into something of organic matter. Dani is complaining she has a terrible headache. As they wander further, they are attacked again, but this time the Brood Queen takes Dani. Dani screams and passes out.
Dani wakes up and finds herself in a cocoon. The Brood Queen reveals to her that she and her friends are going to be implanted with royal eggs, so they all become Brood Queens. Dani’s headache is taking a turn for the worse. As the Brood Queen rants on, Dani finally comprehends that all the landscapes, monsters and such are created with her powers. As the other New Mutants find them, Dani yells to knock her out in stead of the Brood Queen. Sam knocks her out and everything turns back to normal. Later Roberto comforts Dani that they are a team and will always be there for one another. In the night sky they see a falling star…

Shan witnesses that Stevie Hunter receives vague threatening telephone calls. The other New Mutants are playing in the snow outside of the mansion. They get summoned by Professor Xavier to come into the mansion. En route they speak to Lilandra, Xavier’s girlfriend. Professor X explains to the New Mutants that the decision he has made to open the doors of the school, had been done under false pretensions, as he was severely influenced by the Brood Queen. Considering everything that’s happened, he leaves them a choice to stay or leave. They all decide to stay at the Mansion and as his students. Shan tells them that Stevie Hunter is harassed by telephone by an unknown person. The New Mutants decide to help her trace the stalker, with the guidance of Professor X.
In Stevie’s apartment they place a phone tracer that can track any incoming call to its source. When the stalker rings again, Stevie and the New Mutants follow the trail to the Spring Mixer Dance, for which they were also invited. There are a lot of people inside, so they decide that Dani stays in touch with Rahne through their psychic animal rapport. Outside, Rahne (in her wolf form) sees somebody’s skin heat pattern change the moment Stevie and the New Mutants walk in. Dani turns immediately to Peter Bristow, another pupil of Stevie. Peter Bristow flees in a car, followed by the New Mutants. After nearly killing some innocent bystanders, he gets captured. Stevie asks him why he hates her so much, that he is stalking her. Dani uses her power to show Peter’s greatest desire, e.g. kissing Stevie Hunter, and when she reaches deeper looking for reasons, she finds that his parents are punishing hum with a whip. Peter jumps towards Dani, trying to attack her for what she just did, but Shan possesses him in time. They all see scars on his back, some from years old, and Peter yells at Stevie that she does not love him. His parents have told him that if you love someone, you need to punish him. As Stevie did not, he wanted to pay her back. Peter Bristow is transferred to the Child Welfare Bureau.

Due to excruciating pain in his limbs, Professor X has lost contact with the New Mutants, who are away on a well deserved trip to the Fair. Present at the fair is also half of Team America. Roberto is trying to score some autographs of R.R. Reddy, Cowboy and El Lobo; the last one is not too eager to provide this and behaves kind of arrogant. From a distance Viper is observing Team America with a pair of binoculars. In the middle of Team America’s stunt show, something blows up in their faces. Some goons come running towards them. The New Mutants don’t hesitate and attack the goons. Team America is entering the fight on their motor cycles. The goons are getting the worst of it. From above Viper and the Silver Samurai, the actual leaders of the goons, are watching the fight and are disappointed that their attack has not flushed out the Dark Rider, who is the guardian angel of Team America. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Dark Rider appears on a motor cycle and heads straight for the Silver Samurai. With the utmost ease the Silver Samurai defeats the Black Rider, by letting the bike crash, leaving him unconscious on the ground. The Silver Samurai sees it’s a girl in the Black Rider-suit, it is Danielle Moonstar. Roberto and Rahne come running towards them, but are too late, because the Silver Samurai activates his teleportation ring and is gone, with Dani.
Dani Moonstar awakes in a room with a motor bike in it; she remembers nothing after Team America being attacked. Big wheels with spikes are rolling with enormous speed towards her; she’s barely able to dodge them. As one of the wheels turns, she nearly gets killed. Suddenly the Silver Samurai enters the room and asks her to follow. Viper is questioning her about her being the Dark Rider, while now she isn’t even able to ride a motor cycle. She asks what her connection is to Team America. Dani is not able to answer Viper’s questions.
Professor X, Lilandra and Michael Rossi are doing some research on what happened, helped by the info from the New Mutants. After using Cerebro, Professor X seems to have found something. In Washington, Viper and the Silver Samurai are blackmailing Team America into stealing a certain object from an impregnable fortress in the Sierra Madre Mountains or they will kill Dani. After Viper has left, Professor X comes knocking on their door. He tells them that Team America are mutants, or better a Projecting Gestalt. It means that in moments of extreme danger, anyone of them can project the combined abilities of the team onto another, creating an entity known as the Black Rider. This has now happened to Dani. Professor X offers to help Team America before someone else gets hurt in the process. The New Mutants feel betrayed, because Professor X will not directly save Dani, and they decide to rescue her on their own.

The New Mutants are ambushing Karma’s uncle, General Nguyen Ngoc Coy. Easily they overthrow his body guards and Karma possesses him. She releases him when he’s on top of the building and pressures him to reveal Viper’s hiding place. The General calls Karma’s bluff and refuses to tell her anything. He agrees to provide some information if Karma will service him for one year, regardless. Karma accepts.
Team America is in New Mexico, starting with Viper’s mission to steal a crystal from AIM laboratories. R.U. Reddy en El Lobo are racing each other, resulting in the fall of El Lobo. A furious astral image of Professor X is appearing and screams in their minds that they’re foolish men who are playing games at the expense of the life of a young girl. Honcho agrees with the Professor and also gets angry with R.U. Reddy and El Lobo. Midway between Team America and the New Mutants, Professor X shares his concerns with Lilandra. He is not able to switch his thoughts and help quickly between Team America and the New Mutants, leaving the latter nearly unsupervised.
Team America is in Black Mesa, El Lobo and R.U. Reddy have blazed the trail for the others and have earned a rest. Wrench and Honcho are going inside AIM laboratories to steal the crystal. After knocking down some AIM guards and switching clothes, they are going straight for the crystal. As Wrench grabs it, the building explodes and Professor X is struck down by a savage psychic attack.
In Big Sur, Karma leads the rescue of Dani. A strange voice is talking in her head, and it is not Professor X, but someone far more vicious. The first guards the New Mutants encounter are very easily defeated. In Dani’s cell, some guards are trying to eliminate her; she attacks them with their greatest fear and escapes. She finds Wolfsbane on her path, bleeding on the ground; she is slain by the Silver Samurai, who is aiming at her now.
The members of Team America are fleeing on their motor cycles, chased by AIM. Team America knows they will not escape them as sooner or later they are caught. Then El Lobo is calling on the Black Rider to aid them. He has now become the Black Rider and defeats the AIM guards. He lands on the back of Cowboy’s motor cycle, as more AIM guards arrive. The both of them decide to stay and fight, leaving the other members a chance to escape.
As the Silver Samurai is going for the killing blow on Dani, Cannonball and Sunspot are rescuing her by blasting him away. The Silver Samurai activates his ring and teleports away. Viper and Karma are fighting; Karma nearly succeeds in possessing her, as the Silver Samurai comes in, oversees the situation and strikes down Viper. The villains both teleport away.
In the Blackbird, at Colorado River, the escaped members of Team America are reviving Professor X and Lilandra, who were still unconscious of the psychic attack. Honcho asks the Professor where his team mates are. He assures him that they are underway. In Big Sur the New Mutants reunite with their team mate Psyche. When Professor X mentally contacts the New Mutants, Karma sees his face changing and hears another psychic entity telling her that she will be his forever. The Silver Samurai blows up the building, seemingly killing off the New Mutants. The only casualty will be Karma (off panel).

After the explosion, only Karma is missing, presumed dead. The New Mutants are devastated and have searched for days. Standing at the seaside, Roberto takes Shan’s apparent death very hard. Professor X has asked the other New Mutants to summon him. Back at the camp, the X-men are helping out with the search party for Karma. Roberto asks the Professor if there is any news about Shan. The Professor response is negative, but he replies that a visitor has arrived for Sunspot. It is his mother who invites him and the other New Mutants to join her on an expedition to the Amazon River. Subsequently Roberto and the Professor have a big argument about the New Mutants’ staying or leaving the scene. Roberto blames the Professor for being too occupied at the time with Team America, in stead of helping them rescue Dani. Roberto leaves in anger with the threat of quitting the New Mutants. Professor X believes that Karma is still alive and her disappearance has something to do with the very powerful psychic presence he sensed. He wants to have the New Mutants out of harm’s way and deliberately does not inform the New Mutants about the fact that Karma is probably still alive somewhere…
The New Mutants are leaving with Nina DaCosta (Roberto’s mother) to Rio de Janeiro. They arrive in one of the largest, most elegant mansions at Ipanema, owned by Emmanuel DaCosta (Roberto’s father). At 20:00 hours the New Mutants are dining with Roberto’s parents in the palace. Uncomfortably they witness the bickering at each other of Sunspot’s parents. The next morning they attend the carnival in Rio. First they stop at a costumes shop, where they all search for a costume that’s suits well with their personality. When Nina DaCosta is called away by the owner of the shop, she gets kidnapped by some Hellfire Club goons. As the New Mutants try to save her, they are beaten by Axe. Wolfsbane sees how easily her team mates are defeated, and she runs away.
As the other New Mutants regroup, Dani receives a mind call from Rahne, who is following Axe and the other Hellfire Club kidnappers. The other New Mutants follow Rahne through the girls’ psychic rapport. Rahne mentions that Roberto’s mother is not in danger, but still the New Mutants decide to take action Magnum P.I.-style. First Wolfsbane gives a big wolf’s howl outside; this is getting on the nerves of the Hellfire Club goons. They are searching the place, but are taken out one by one by Psyche and her lively illusions of their greatest terrors. Sunspot manages to rescue his mother by defeating Axe, this time. A couple of days later Nina DaCosta and the New Mutants are departing for the Amazon jungle, only to be watched by Emmanuel DaCosta and Sebastian Shaw (the Black King of the Hellfire Club).

The New Mutants are accompanying Nina DaCosta on an expedition to the Amazon Jungle. Having some downtime in the jungle, they accidentally stumble upon a group of Native women, the Amazons. After a quick fight, started by the latter, they capture one of them. Castro, a boat crew member, who is a secret operative of the Hellfire Club and works for Sunspot’s father, is beating the girl up. As Wolfsbane finds out what he’s doing, she gets knocked unconscious. When she comes by, she sees that the boat is floating off stream towards a big waterfall. A crash cannot be prevented. In the water, the captured Amazon girl seems to be White in stead of Indian, and she speaks fluent English. On shore, they are taken prisoner by a Roman Legion to become slaves of Imperial Rome.

The New Mutants and Amara Aquilla have been taken prisoner by Roman Legionnaires in the middle of the Amazon Jungle. They are brought to Nova Roma, a hidden city in the Andes, where time has stood still on ancient Rome. Sunspot and Cannonball are brought to the Gladiators, where they are drugged and prepared for battle in the Arena. Psyche, Wolfsbane and Amara are brought to the House of Women, also drugged and made beautiful to be sold at the Slave Market. In the Arena, the boys win all battles easily, thanks to their mutant powers and the forced drug. When they turn on each other, the girls come to their aid with their mutant powers. People are shouting that they are children of Selene, the Black Priestess. Senator Gallio convinces the audience that the New Mutants are children of Gods and therefore have to be glorified.

After their success in the arena, the New Mutants are hailed in as gods by the people of Nova Roma. During the procession Senator Marcus Gallio is giving evil looks in the direction of Senator Lucius Aquilla, not going unnoticed by Sam. The New Mutants are staying in the palace of Senator Marcus Gallio. They are pampered in comfort and luxury, served by slaves. After supper Senator Marcus Gallio reveals to the New Mutants his relationship with Amara’s father, Senator Lucius Aquilla, which is not very good, because Aquilla is Plebian, while he himself is Patrician. Rahne intends to think his story is true, while Sam does not believe a word of it. Roberto is wandering away, thinking of the three women he lost in a short time, first his girlfriend Juliana Sandoval, later Shan (Karma) and now his mother, probably drowned in the Amazon. As he looks through the window, he thinks he sees his mother as a captive; he runs outside but is stopped by the palace guards, who will not let him pass. It seems that they are prisoners of Senator Gallio now. At night Dani escapes to investigate, but she is drugged and taken away by forces unknown. Rahne and Roberto, awaiting Dani’s return, are ambushed by Castro, who fires a gun at them. The bullet hits Roberto, who falls through the window, only to be rescued by Sam. Rahne catches the assassin Castro. After being questioned by Senator Gallio he spills out that Senator Aquilla has sent him to kill the New Mutants.
In an underground cave Psyche wakes up and finds herself imprisoned, together with Amara Aquilla and another girl. Guards are leading them to the sanctuary of The Cult of Fire, where they are to be sacrificed. Selene (wife of Marcus Gallio), as the Cult’s Black Priestess, materializes and summons the unnamed girl. The unnamed girl is thrown into a lava pit by Selene, who absorbs her life energy. Selene reveals that she is a goddess, who has walked this earth since the dawn of history.
The other New Mutants and Senator Gallio’s troops are invading the estate of Amara’s father Lucius Aquilla. Sam is having doubts because this attack is a little too convenient and he takes Sunspot out of the battle. He shares his concerns with Roberto and they are just in time to rescue Senator Aquilla from certain death. They stand up against the troops of Senator Gallio, telling them that Aquilla is their prisoner. Much to the chagrin of Senator Gallio, who threatens Senator Aquilla in Latin, believing that Roberto and Sam cannot speak the language. Roberto does speak Latin and knows the whole truth now, realising they have made a terrible mistake. In the cave Amara stands above the lava on a board, while Dani tries to break free of Selene’s spell. In the fight that follows Amara is thrown into the pool of lava by Selene. Without a sound Amara disappears in the lava. Suddenly Nova Roma is struck by an earthquake. In the cave Amara is reborn from the lava and towers high above Selene, wanting to have vengeance.

Death: Senator Marcus Gallio
Amara is reborn from her fall into the lava, she rises out of it and attacks Selene with her new mutant powers, determined to stop her reign of terror. During her counter attack Selene reveals she can bring all things inanimate to life; two stone monsters attack Amara and she falls down. Selene turns her attention to Dani, who lies on the ground. Dani is shocked because of what happened to Amara and believes that Amara was as surprised as she was. Selene has grown old because of the fighting, it costs her her youth. She tells Dani this is easily rectified and with her powers she brings her loyal disciples to death, one after one falling into the hot lava. Their life forces restore Selene’s youth. She enthrals Dani with her powers, trying to make Dani her apprentice. Dani is no match for Selene’s years of practice, but still finds the strength to stand up against her. Luckily Amara shows up again and covers Selene in burning lava. Dani runs away from the heath that Amara is generating, but she doesn’t succeed and falls back. With her powers she reveals what Amara is most afraid of; killing Dani with her new powers. As the two girls try to help each other, Selene attacks Amara again and drains her life energy.
Meanwhile Amara’s father and his guards are captives of Senator Gallio. The two senators argue with each other over Rome, but Senator Aquilla is silenced and taken away by a centurion. Roberto thinks he sees his mother among the prisoners. Disguised as a guard, he enters the prison to find his mother in chains, with Castro by her side. Castro seems to be operating for The Hellfire Club. He strikes Castro down. From his mother, Sunspot finds out more details of what’s really going on in Nova Roma. His mother acknowledges also that his father has ties into all of this. The two of them are teaming up with Aquilla’s men and the Amazones to start an assault on the palace of Senator Gallio. In the palace Senator Gallio is celebrating his victory over Senator Aquilla, who kneels before him, evidently heavily whipped and tortured. Rahne and Sam are both having severe doubts about the Senator. Suddenly Amara appears through the floor in her mutant form. She tells that the earth has given her her life back, but she is still too weak to defend her father. Sunspot and his mother, accompanied by Aquilla’s legionnaires and the Amazons are entering the palace, causing heavy fighting. Sam and Rahne soon side with them. In the final fight in the palace, Senator Aquilla kills Senator Gallio in a duel.
The New Mutants learn from Amara, that Psyche is in the hands of Selene, who is trying to make Dani her apprentice. The New Mutants together with Amara go and search for Dani. They are covered in stone, but manage to break out of it. They find Dani hanging at some sort of altar, where she is clearly to become changed into an image of Selene. The New Mutants battle fiercely for the life of Dani, and in the end their combined efforts do the trick. Selene gets buried into a pool of lava, hidden under piles of rock. When the battle is over, Amara asks the others what’s to become of her, will she be like them or like Selene?

Emmanuel DaCosta enters his office to find his son Roberto waiting for him in his chair. Roberto confronts his father with everything what’s happened to him, his mother, the New Mutants and the citizens of Nova Roma in the Amazonian Jungle. They have a discussion about his father being poor when he was young, on the contrary to Roberto who never had a poor day in his life. The temperaments of the two men heat up and Roberto asks if his father even cares about him, what if the attempt at his life from the assassin Castro had succeeded? His father doesn’t appreciate his tone and raises his hand. That’s when Roberto changes into Sunspot and threatens his father that he and the New Mutants will do everything to prevent him from exploiting the land of Nova Roma. His father says that if Roberto leaves his office now, he will not have a son anymore. Roberto leaves with the remark that from now on he is half an orphan. Emmanuel calls Sebastian Shaw and accepts his invitation to join the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club.
Dani and Amara are at the beach, enjoying the sun, the sea and the sights. Amara thinks of her leaving Nova Roma. When she had refused to leave her father, her power had acted up triggered from her emotions. Her father had comforted her and both agreed it was better for her to join the New Mutants back to Westchester, where people were better equipped to help her. At the beach a few fellows are harassing Amara, one even steals a kiss. The Nova Roman gets so furious that she loses control of her powers and a small volcano appears, erupting lava. In the confusion among the beach guests Dani and Amara lose each other.
Rahne is in a church, praying for forgiveness for what almost happened to Amara and her father. Because Sam is in love and Dani spends quite some time with Amara, she’s afraid that her friends love her more when she is Wolfsbane than when she is just Rahne. Suddenly Sam comes running in, shouting they need her wolf powers, because Amara is missing. Amara is lost in Rio de Janeiro. Not used to the city life, she runs around uncontrollably, leaving small volcanos and small tremors of earthquakes in her wake. The New Mutants are following her close, but haven’t found her yet. Since she is not used to the strong direct sun, she passes out on the street, due to sunstroke. Some street children find her and bring her to Flor, their sister. That’s where the New Mutants finally locate her. In her delirium Amara is building up for a major earthquake and a volcano is already appearing in the harbour. The New Mutants know there is no time to lose. Sam and Roberto fly away and fetch a truck full of ice to cool her off and save Rio.
