Was his existence nothing but a dream? He believes he was a god who was sometimes a man, or perhaps he was a man who was sometimes a god. Either way, he had experienced much until he was … no more.
Recently a strange, mystical hammer fell from the heavens and landed in the desert. Many had come to claim the item and one by one they failed to even lift it. Eventually one man made the attempt and was engulfed in lightning. In the void, wearing a simple white tunic, Thor feels a summons and the man who had found the hammer is revealed as Donald Blake, a man who Thor believes should not exist. As a creation of Odin he should have ceased to exist along with all the gods of Asgard. Blake explains that when Odin and the power of the gods had been erased from existence he simply came into existence.
Blake continues to explain that if the gods had been erased from existence, then Thor should not exist even in the Void. The gods will continue to exist if man has a need for them. Thor’s time is not yet over, because if it is and Thor is not on Earth and the right time, mankind's end will be ensured.
With all the trials he has endured and with all he has lost, Thor is uncertain as to if he wants to return. Blake advises Thor that this is his choice to make if he wants to turn all he was, all he is, into nothing more than a lie. Regarding all and everyone he has lost, Blake tells Thor "If it is for mortals say the gods exist, then I say that they live on in the hearts and souls and minds of mortals. They only need to be found, and awakened." He also tells him "Where there is Thor, there is Asgard."
From the surrounding shadows emerge dozens of monstrous forms which attack the golden haired god. Thor fights valiantly against the impossible numbers until he manages to grasp Mjolnir, his mystical hammer. The misshapen creatures are scattered by a bolt of lighting, and as the dust settles, Thor stands revealed in his familiar vestments. He has decided that he wants to live again.
While walking along Route 66, Donald Blake happens upon a familiar looking walking stick. He stops to claim it before continuing along the desolate highway. Eventually he comes to a small town where he decides to rent a room. When asked for identification, he produces a blank card, but the woman at the desk accepts it as a valid New York driver’s license. Taking a key, he climbs the stairs to his room. He quietly sits on the edge of the bed, and then suddenly strikes his stick on the wooden floor. Outside the dark sky is split by a sudden bolt of lightning.

Donald Blake is enjoying a good breakfast in the diner of the small town he has recently chosen to call home. Word of his arrival has already spread through the tiny community and Bill, the Diner owner, gives him his breakfast for free as a welcome.
Once finished his morning meal, Blake heads out on the road stopping only when he finds a vast expanse of land with nothing for miles in any direction. He gently kneels and pauses for a moment before suddenly slams his walking stick into the ground to be reborn as Thor. "Where there is Thor, there is Asgard," he thinks and begins to spin his hammer. The rumbling of his effort is felt for miles around. A storm begins to form and quickly gathers strength over the course of a week to cover a huge area. Thor eventually stops and Asgard stands revealed in its entirety, but he is alone.
Local law enforcement comes to investigate the disturbance and the Sheriff informs Thor that he cannot simply build on land that is not his. Thor's solution is simple. With the power of his hammer, he raises the city and it's foundations a short distance above the ground. The confused Sheriff leaves with his deputy.
Alone in the darkness of the night, Thor broods alone and is interrupted by visitor the next morning. Sam Miller the owner of the land Thor has built on, or over, has come to offer to sell the land if the price is right. Thor leads him to the Treasury of Asgard and the man fills the bead of his pick-up truck with as much gold as he can carry. The townsfolk learn of the sale and decided to accept the idea of their strange new neighbour, Beth Spooner realizing that he must be lonely up there by himself.
"If it is for mortals say the gods exist, then I say that they live on in the hearts and souls and minds of mortals. They only need to be found, and awakened," he remembers and sets forth to search the world for his lost comrades.

Thor is inexplicably drawn to New Orleans as he starts his search for his fellow Agardians. He cannot understand why such destruction has been possible, nor can he understand why such destruction was not averted by the many heroes of the world.
As he surveys the extensive damage he is confronted by a local man. The man questions Thor’s presence in the city asking why he was not here when he was needed. Thor simply responds that he could not because he was dead. The man will not be put off by this response and still states that Thor should have done something. He tells Thor that if he could not save the past then he must save the future. The man walks away leaving Thor to ponders these strange words
Thor turns towards the electronic voice of Iron Man. Iron Man expresses his pleasure in learning that Thor is back, but Thor does not reply. Iron Man asks why he won’t respond considering their past friendship, but still Thor does not reply.
Iron Man gets to the point. He tells Thor that the placement of Asgard in the middle of the United States has not gone unnoticed and that it would be best located elsewhere. He also explains the recent changes regarding the super hero community; that either you work with the government or against the government. The sky is suddenly split with a bolt of lightning.
Thor acknowledges that there have certainly been changes. He mentioned that friends have recently been treated as enemies. He also points out that his very being has been violated to create a genetic aberration; an insult to his very existence. He loudly asks Iron Man if this is how friends treat each other. Lightning continues to strike the ground threateningly between them.
Iron Man attempts to tell his side of the story, but Thor stops him striking him with his mighty hammer. Regaining his feet, Iron Man hits Thor with a full repulsor blast to no effect, then attempts a full body tackle. Thor easily smashes Iron Man through a building and quite a distance across the city. Masking his obvious pain, Iron Man jokes that Thor has been working out. Thor clarifies that he currently is not holding back and hits Iron Man with a massive bolt of lightning. With all his systems down, Iron Man is helpless as Thor rips the faceplate from his armour to look at Tony Stark dace-to-face. Thor advises Tony to rethink how he gives orders to a god. He also tells him that anyone who comes to Asgard uninvited will have a display of true power. Thor explains that he has no time for their recent squabbles and he is currently neutral in such matters. He cautions Tony in giving Thor any reason to choose sides.
Shaken, Tony suggests a compromise. He suggests that Asgard should be treated as an embassy and not be considered United States territory placing anyone therein outside the regulations of the Superhuman Registration Act. Thor is satisfied with this decision and allows Tony to leave, but not without a few final words. He tells Tony that although he is currently occupied with more pressing matters, the discussion about the violation of his genetic code is not yet finished.
Thor approaches the man who had earlier confronted him. The man’s niece explains that the man has not been the same since the hurricane and that he does no mean what he says. He had been forced to watch as his loved ones were lost in the flooding. The man quietly tells Thor to get off his bridge so that he can go back to sleep.
Thor comes to a realization and touches the man’s face. Then, with the whirl of his hammer, he lifts the man into the air transforming him into his true form, that of Heimdall, guardian of the gods of Asgard.
Within S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Tony Stark stands looking at the shattered remains of his armour as he is informed that there are now two individuals occupying Asgard and requests further orders. Tony, battered and bruised, tells the man to leave the matter alone… for now.

The Hotel is visited by Dr. Ernest Lereaux of Doctor's Without Borders. He asks her to have Donald Blake join him, as his skills are very much needed in Africa.
They journey to the Umeme Mungu Refugee Camp in Dahran, Africa, where tribal warfare has killed millions over the last five years. Blake labours long and hard tending to the sick and dying. At the end of the day he takes a well earned break and is soon joined by Dr. Lereaux who explains the history of the region. The residents had begun their battles with machetes and rifles but have graduated to mortars and rockets, essentially killing each other faster; more efficiently. Blake asks if the U.N. is going to step in, but Lereaux does not know but in the meantime they do what they can. He then introduces their guards, Leo Kincaid, Rolf Mueller, and Trevor Newly when they are surprised by a girl running out from the forest. Blake notices that in spite of the heat she is wearing a heavy coat and attempts to shout a warning but it comes too late and the bomb she is wearing explodes. They are then assaulted by a group of armed Ngare. They are unprepared for the attack, but the guards act accordingly.
Painfully, Blake drags himself over to his walking stick, lightening splits the sky and thunder drowns out the gunfire. The fighting stops for a moment as the players look at the latest addition to the landscape, but only for a moment. Thor throws his hammer knocking many of the Ngare from their feet. A short distance away, some of the armed men train their weapons on unarmed men and children. They open fire, but the bullets impact against the form of the mighty Thor with no effect. Thor then sends these Ngare flying with another toss of his hammer. Those who do not receive his wrath directly run.
Thor then talks to the three guards, asking how they all joined at the same time in spite of coming from different parts of the world. He asks the meaning of the words Umeme Mungu and learns that they mean "Lighting God." He now understands and a spin of his hammer, the guards stand revealed as Hogan the Grim, Fandral the Dashing, and Volstagg of the Warriors Three.
Thor attempts to rally his comrades to chase down those who are escaping, but Ibo Abua, the leader of the Mangetu Tribe, tells them that there is not point in it. They will return, but if they are stopped their families will return instead. If they are all killed, then the answer is still genocide. Regardless of action, Africa must deal with its own problems.
Thor does think of a possible solution. He has Ibo Abua lead him to the area that divides their people, then smashes the ground with his hammer opening a chasm between the two territories. It may not be a permanent solution, but the Mangetu now have time to prepare for the return of the Ngare.
Thor takes his newly found companions to his new Asgard. Heimdall has noticed that Thor is being selective in the Asgardians he has been reviving, but this may not be the best course of action to take. He asks all-seeing Heimdall to use his power to locate the lost Asgardians more swiftly.

Thor receives an invitation attend the neighbouring town meeting. He is also asked to have his friends join him.
Thor learns that no only has Heimdall had no luck in locating Lady Sif, but the number of Asgardians he has been able to see has been inexplicably dwindling over the last few days. He directs Thor to a specific area in the desert between Nevada and New Mexico to investigate. In a restricted government area, Thor discovers an underground bunker of sorts serving a prison for dozens of people. Thor promises to help them, and one dark-haired woman in a white dress exclaims that she knows him and asks for help.
There is a resounding booming heard from across the room and in strides the Destroyer. The instantly begin to battle as the dark haired woman watches in awe. As the battle progresses, Thor frees the mortals below in the hopes that some may actually be lost gods waiting to be transformed. Thor eventually defeats the construct releasing the essence of Balder the Brave which had been animating it.
Thor wonders why the mortals have not come to the surface and moves to investigate. He learns that they are all simply mortals except for the woman in white hiding in the corner. To his shock, Thor learns that the woman is not Sif but actually Loki now in the form of a female god. Loki explains that his strange transformation is like because of being half frost giant. Loki also explains that his past will not affect his current situation; that he will no longer plan and scheme against his half-brother.
After Thor has left, Loki speaks to a hidden individual of how Thor has been avoiding the return of specific Asgardians which have caused him trouble in the past. In awakening Loki, Thor has begun what he has been trying to avoid. The hidden figure is revealed to be Doctor Doom, who agrees to help Loki in his plan.
That evening, Beth Spooner is glad to have Volstagg and some of his Asgardian brethren join the town meeting.

Donald Blake enjoys a nice breakfast and learns of the recent town meeting. Along with the regular townsfolk, the invited Asgardians also attended, but did not quite understand the events. Volstagg was particularly puzzled by the discussion of upgrading particular homes from a septic system to a sewer system, much to the mayor's discomfort.
Stranded due to a flat tire, a man and his son are having difficulties as their jack is broken. After trekking across the state to hunt wild boar, Hogun helps by lifting the truck long enough to allow the man to change the tire. He then hoists the two wild boar onto his shoulders, declining the offer of a ride.
Back at the diner, Bill Junior tells how he recently met a beautiful Asgardian named Kelda. The two engaged in small talk, Bill of his linage explaining his name, Kelda of her home in the Golden Realm. As she leaves she offers an open invitation for Bill to visit her in Asgard. Blake suggests that Bill is in love, but he refuses to seek romance out of his class; "A bird can love a fish, but where would they build a house together?" . Blake convinces him that nothing is impossible by simple answering "On the edge of the river."
As his sits alone in his booth, Blake begins to converse with his other self envisioning Thor sitting across from him. Thor is displeased with how he has been tricked to revive Asgardians he would have avoided. Blake explains that it is likely inevitable and that he may have to revive all of the undesirables in order to revive those he truly misses. This includes Odin, who typically refuses to envision the future keeping Asgard in the past. Blake pays fro his breakfast, leaves the diner and walks back towards Asgard. Striking his walking stick against the ground, he is transformed once again into the God of Thunder. Using mighty Mjolnir, Thor flies into the stratosphere. He asks Blake to seek out Sif if his plan fails, then draws on all the power he can, surrounding the planet with lightning. The bolts strike all over the world seemingly restoring more lost Asgardians, including a large sinister looking man in dark fur and a horned helmet. Spent from the exertion, Thor plummets back to the ground where he lies motionless on the cracked earth.

Thor is brought back to Asgard by Balder and Hogun following his recent exertion. He orders his men to place him into Odinsleep in order to regain the power he has too quickly spent. Once sealed inside the stone coffin, Donald Blake suddenly materializes from nowhere. Leaving Asgard, Donald Blake purchases a plane ticket and goes in search of Jane Foster.
Thor finds himself in a world between life and death and is first met by Odin's ravens who accuse him of reviving all Asgardians but one. Thor stands by his actions stating that he was only capable of reviving those who fell during Ragnarok. The Ravens simply direct Thor to the light and sounds of battle on the horizon.
Thor is shocked by what he witnesses at the base of the cliff. Odin is locked in mortal battle with Surtur and appears to be losing. Reflexively Thor moves to his aid as Odin deals a fatal blow to the fire giant. Thor knells by the side of his father. Odin asks how Thor has come to the place of the dead. He tells Thor that it should no longer be the Odinsleep; it is not the Thorsleep.
Odin knows that Thor has not tried to bring him back, but does not blame him. He tells Thor his history. He tells of his father Bor and how he joined him in many battles until they finally came against the frost giants. Bor had been transformed into snow and before the wind blew him across the land he asked Odin to seek help in restoring him. Odin did not and simply pronounced his father to be dead. Many years later he had a son of his own; a son who had the same eyes as his father; a son who would be destined to follow in his footsteps.

The birth of Thor acted to remind Odin of is betrayal of his father Bor, haunting his every moment. The spirit of his dead father came to Odin telling him to take in the son of an enemy, who is yet to be killed, and raise him as his own. If this were to be done, Bor would no longer trouble Odin’s thoughts, but his destiny will remain unchanged.
Sometime later, Odin was battling the Frost Giants. The had all been killed when a young one ran forth calling for his dead father, then turned on the Asgardians in his grief. Odin ordered that he be spared and taken back to the golden realm and that he would raise him as his own. Unfortunately he did not know that the time that Bor’s promise of silence after this act was not one of forgiveness, but instead one of vengeance.
Odin also informs Thor that Surtur had infused part of his essence in this netherworld in the hopes of one day breaking free to the land of the living. Every day he tries, and every day Odin stands ready to stop him. Every day, Surtur his killed and Odin dies from his own wounds. Every day they are both revived to battle again… forever.
Thor offers to free Odin from his battles and return him to life, but Odin refuses. If he were to be freed, nothing would stand in Surtur way. As he says this, Surtur is again before them but this time he is attacked by both Odin and Thor. Beaten, Surtur retreats to heal his wounds. Odin tells Thor that it is time for him to return to the land of the living, and to not think of him with sadness. This afterlife of Odin’s, an eternal battle, is the closest thing to heaven as he would ever hope for.
Donald Blake has finally managed to find Jane Foster. She is working the oncology floor, doing her best to make the suffering comfortable. She takes a few moments to talk with Blake in the lunchroom. He learns that she had recently been divorced and will likely lose custody of her son. She has not had an easy time since Donald Blake had disappeared; realistically that he had never existed. With her dealings in the past with Asgard, her memory had not been altered. Don cannot help feeling guilty for her difficulties, but still tells Jane about his search for Sif. Realizing that he was not there to see her, but to find Sif, she slaps him hard across the face. She returns to her duties leaving him alone in the lunchroom.
Donald returns to the oncology wing and Jane apologizes to him for her earlier outburst. She asks a nurse to see to the calls of a nearby patient and continues to discuss Don’s search for Sif. She explains that since she had once been merged with the goddess, she can be certain that such a mergence does not currently exist. They part on friendlier terms.
In a nearby room, the elderly Mrs. Chambers is being tended to by the nurse from the hallway. She calms her, combing her hair then hold up a mirror for her to see herself. The reflection is that of Sif, and the nurse is revealed to be Loki in disguise.

Balder watches quietly as Thor leaves Asgard. Loki approaches him and attempts conversation, but Balder wants nothing to do with the trickster. Loki continues, noting that he has noticed Balder's discomfort in this new world. They come across Fandral, Volstagg and Hogun who quickly side with Balder stating that Thor has told them that their futures are all their own and that they can come and go as they wish. Loki points out that although this may be true, they rarely venture out. Loki reminds them that they have all been given a second chance and they should use it to its fullest as Thor would want. He mentions that has heard that frost giants have survived to this new world, if anyone in interested and returns to his room.
Balder is interested, and he follows Loki to get more information. He learns that they sighting was in the Rocky Mountains and offers to send Balder to the site through a door with a spell on it. He gives Balder a magic ring which will reopen the door to Asgard when Loki's name is whispered. Balder steps through the door onto a snowy terrain and He trudges forth until he discovers three frost giants about to kill a father and his son who's car has overheated on the side of the road. He quickly leaps in to the kill, dropping two of the giants. As he is about to be killed by the third he is rescued by Loki. Before the wounded behemoth can speak, Loki delivers a killing blow. The police arrive and take the Asgardians into custody
Back in Asgard, Volstagg asks Heimdall of recent events regarding the Avengers stating that he may wish to pursue a role as a super-hero. Their conversation is interrupted by a voice from below. Bill junior has come to visit Kelda bringing flowers. Bill is allowed to enter Asgard to visit with Kelda where he attempts to introduce some of the Asgardians to the game of basketball.
Thor collects Balder and Loki from the police department. It is doubtful that charges will be filed against the two, but such action will not be permitted again. They are released into Thor's custody and Loki returns them to the golden realm. Thor reminds that although Balder is encouraged to find his new place in this world, he must do so cautiously until he understands this new world. As they leave each other, Loki once again offers his opinion to Balder; that Thor tells them that they are free but under his conditions.
He recounts Balder's history; of how his father had been killed by frost giants and ever since he has been in a subservient role. Balder corrects Loki stating that he serves Thor as his King and as a friend. Loki then confirms that Balder's allegiance to Thor rests in his friendship, but his loyalty in Thor rest with Thor as the son of Odin. Loki then asks what would change if Balder's father had not been killed by frost giants, but instead was Odin and that Thor was his half brother placing him as an equal to Thor in ruling Asgard.

New Asgard has become a big tourist attraction in the small rural area. People search for the best vantage point to gaze at the new wonder, willing to pay five dollars to peer through a telescope to view the new home of the gods.
Loki has told Balder that he is Thor’s half brother, but Balder does not believe it. Loki simply tells Balder to ask Thor himself. Balder is astonished that Thor also knows this, but Loki explains that Thor probably believes that he is protecting Balder and explains the history of the situation.
Odin’s victory feasts had been legendary, lasting for weeks. Woman would compete openly for the affections of the gods, Odin most of all. Odin took interest in a woman named Frigga and she bore him a child. The birth of a son amongst the gods would typically be a time to rejoice, but Odin had been receiving dreams and visions of the future where the child, now grown to manhood, suffered in his final moments taking the fate of Asgard with him. He set forth to learn more of these visions eventually coming to an ancient death chamber. The spirit with would speak to Odin only if giving a warm beverage, and since Odin had brought nothing with him he made an offering of his own blood. He gave rise to a horror which continues to haunt Midgard to this day but he learned what he had been seeking. He learned that if Balder were to die at the beginning of Ragnarok it would herald the end of the gods, but he would be reborn to create a race of new gods, ensuring the continuance of Odin’s legacy. But if Balder were to die before Ragnarok had begun then the gods would not return, ending Odin’s linage. If this prophecy were to be revealed, then he would become the target of all of Odin’s enemies therefore his heritage had been kept a secret for his safety and the safety of all the gods. The question remains as to why Thor has chosen to keep Balder’s heritage a secret now that Ragnarok has past.
Following his visit to Asgard, Bill cannot concentrate on the most menial of tasks. He is mind continually returns to the vision of Kelda. A patron of the Diner named Kyle compares Asgard to Las Vegas; beautiful on the outside but dangerous within. A place like that can kill regular people. Once Kyle has left, another patron of the diner offers Bill another point of view. He tells Bill that if someone does nothing, then he must still live with regret. The second man leaves and Bill simply looks out the window at the beauty of Asgard.
Thor confirms Loki’s story with Balder. He also explains that he had not yet told Balder because he had been waiting for the right time to do so. As more time passed, the task of telling Balder simply became more and more difficult. Now that the truth has been told, Loki simply suggests a celebration; a coronation of the new prince of Asgard. Thor agrees and the celebrations commence, crowning Balder as the new Prince of Asgard.
A small child gazes through a telescope at Asgard and is able to see Loki through a window. Strangely enough, Loki gazes back and appears to see the child watching her and smiles, scaring the poor child.

To aid in their battle against rising boredom, the citizens of Asgard engage in war games. Volstagg and the gold team proclaim their victory over the blue team to Balder their current liege. Balder announces the victor of the game and graciously awards both teams and endless supply of mead for their efforts.
Donald Blake meets Jane Foster for dinner. Jane tells Don how they nearly lost their elderly cancer patient Mrs. Chambers, but the woman has continued her brave fight for life. Unknown to Jane, the woman has been maintaining her strength by viewing her true image as the fair lady Sif in the silver hand mirror grasped firmly in her hand.
Loki discusses the current situation in Asgard with Balder. It was not long ago that the Asgardians were permitted to walk among human beings, but now they find themselves confined to their city in the sky. Their conversation is interrupted with news of a fight elsewhere in the city. Balder and Loki arrive to witness an Asgardian named Alarr receive a fatal blow from a spear; a blow which would previously not have been so serious. The recent rebirth of the gods on Midgard has made them far more vulnerable to harm. In spite of this tragedy, Loki suggests that if the Asgardians are permitted to simply continue their limited existence within the confines of the city, then perhaps their new lives truly have little worth.
As Don and Jane leave the restaurant, Don is momentarily distracted by a television report commemorating the anniversary of Captain America's death. He excuses himself in order to visit the memorial site of the fallen Avenger. At the feet of a statue of Captain America, Blake takes a moment to say a few words of admiration for the lost hero before striking the ground with his walking stick transforming into the mighty Thor.
Thor regards the memorial for a moment before turning away, holding his hammer aloft and crying "Avengers Assemble", shattering the night sky with lightning. He is about to claim failure for his effort when he is suddenly addressed by a blue, spectral figure with a star on its chest which has appeared at the base of the monument.
Captain America has been successfully summoned from beyond the grave by the god of thunder. He is please that Thor has been able to return from apparent death, but Thor is unhappy that Captain America has not been offered a warriors afterlife in Valhalla. Thor tells his friend that he plans to avenge his murder. Captain America tells his friend not to, but he does have another concern. The people of the United States have forgotten what he has stood for in life since his death. He has been able to witness growing media talk twisting his image for use in specific personal agendas. Thor wishes his former team mate peace in the afterlife and allows him to return from whence he came.
Thor flies into orbit, lands on a single newscast satellite and unleashes his lightning disrupting broadcast for a full minute; a moment of silence for a fallen warrior on the anniversary of his death.
In Asgard, Alarr is place on a funeral pyre as a solemn Balder looks on. Thor returns to Asgard and knows immediately that someone recently died; Balder tells Thor that they need to talk. Over to one side, Loki allows herself a slight smile.
