First Appearance: Ultimate X-Men #46
Last Appearance: Ultimate X-Men #81
Cause of Death: Presumably, he suffocated himself with his shirt sleeve
Major Enemies: X-Men
Eyes: red irises; when he uses his hypnotic power the entire eye turns red
Hair: black
Other distinguishing features: Tattoos covering the left side of his chest and his entire left arm. Tattoo on his right arm that spells the word "Sinister".
On his forehead between his eyes, he has a red rhomb, which at times starts to glow.

The stammering Essex was a man who tried to become one of the horsemen of the mysterious Apocalypse. His devotion for his 'Lord Apocalypse' went that far that he had a resembling dummy of Apocalypse. To complete his transformation into a horseman of Apocalypse, Essex had to deliver ten innocent mutant souls. On one night, he successfully collected four souls out of five, first paralyzing them with his hypnotic power and then shooting them. His fifth intended victim, Jean-Paul Beaubier, who would come to be known as "Northstar", survived because of his super-quick reflexes. The bullet entered his lung instead of his heart, after which Jean-Paul ended up in a coma. But just before the bullet hit Northstar, Northstar saw a tattoo on the killer’s arm, which spelled the word ‘Sinister’. The man revealed, just before he shot Northstar, that he wanted to be referred to as Mister Sinister.

At the hospital, after Marvel Girl entered Northstar’s mind and stood by him, Northstar was able to come out of his coma by reliving the previous night. Because Marvel Girl witnessed the events of the previous night, she was able to get an image of Mister Sinister, which she transferred into the minds of the other X-Men. When the X-Men went in search of Mister Sinister, Professor X allowed only the senior X-Men, with the exception of Iceman, to leave the Institute. By the time the X-Men found out Mister Sinister’s address, Mister Sinister was already in front of the Xavier Institute, where he planned to kill his other six innocent mutants.

Because Mister Sinister was invisible to cameras he was able to sneak into the Institute undetected. Mister Sinister hypnotized the professor, after which he pushed the professor down the stairs. Unfortunately for Mister Sinister, Iceman appeared after which a hunt between Mister Sinister and the younger X-Men took place. In the end, it was Rogue who defeated Mister Sinister. Storm arrived just in time to prevent Rogue from their would-be murderer. S.H.I.E.L.D. took Mister Sinister to the Triskelion.

On one occasion during his imprisonment, Mister Sinister received a visit from the mysterious Apocalypse, who told him that he was no longer one of his horsemen.

During Magneto’s escape from the Triskelion, Magneto destroyed its security and opened the prison cells, including the one of Mister Sinister but Mister Sinister chose to remain seated.

Sinister was recently found dead, apparently having suffocated himself with his shirt sleave. However, having once stated "For those who serve Lord Apocalypse death is only part of evolution" it is uncertain if he will stay dead for long.

Mister Sinister had the power to hypnotize people. His victims were unable to move, but they remained aware of what was happening to them.
When Mister Sinister fired a gun, he never missed his target.
Mister Sinister also had the ability to pass cameras without being registered by them.
It is unclear if these were Mister Sinister's own powers or if they were given to him by Apocalypse.
