Jean-Paul Beaubier is the son of the Canadian ambassador for the United States. Jean-Paul Beaubier went to the Stuyvesant High School in New York City. In his sophomore year Jean-Paul realised that he is gay. When he came out of the closet, his mother wanted him to go to Harvey Milk, which is a special school where gay kids can get an education without being harassed. But Jean-Paul refused to go there because he didn’t want to segregate himself from the rest of society. When his school organized a track and field invitational, Jean-Paul ran the mile just under three minutes, after which he got kicked off the team because people thought he was on steroids. (Ultimate X-Men #46)
The next day, Jean-Paul meets Angel and Nightcrawler of the X-Men. At first, he refers to them as being freaks, but after Nightcrawler reminded him of his achievement of the other day, Jean-Paul came to realise that he too is a mutant. When Angel and Nightcrawler invited him to the Xavier Institute, Jean-Paul wanted to be left alone. He refused the invitation because his father, who knows Nick Fury, warned Jean-Paul for their little cult. (Ultimate X-Men #46)
Later that evening, when Jean-Paul was walking around in New York, a man called him. And although Jean-Paul intended to continue his stroll, he made the error to look at the guy’s eyes. Using his hypnotic power, the stranger made Jean-Paul stand against the wall. Before Jean-Paul got shot in the lung by the stranger, Jean-Paul noticed a tattoo on the man’s arm, which spelled ‘Sinister’. (Ultimate X-Men #46)
The next day, Marvel Girl entered Jean-Paul’s mind and told him that he got lucky, because the bullet, that was aimed for his heart, ended up in his lung, thanks to his slick reflexes. Unfortunately, Jean-Paul ended up in a coma. To come out of the coma, Marvel Girl explained to him that he could only do that if he confronted his attacker again by reliving the previous evening. With the help of Marvel Girl, Jean-Paul was able to regain consciousness. At that moment, Jean-Paul met Peter, who staid with him the entire night, for the very first time. (Ultimate X-Men #47)
Later on, Jean-Paul transferred schools and ended up at Emma Frost’s Academy of Tomorrow in Chicago. After Jean-Paul passed the Advanced Leadership Workshop, he was allowed to use his powers in off-campus community service missions. On one of those missions, it seemed as though Polaris had lost control over her powers. In the incident, several civilians got killed, after which Polaris was brought to the Triskelion. In order to break her out of the place, Havok asked their friends for help.
To get from Chicago to New York, Havok and his friends used a car. Just as they arrived in New York, a large part of the X-Men, who found out Alex’ plan to break out his girlfriend, awaited their arrival. In the fight that followed, Jean-Paul was able to knock out Shadowcat. In the end the X-Men were defeated. Because their car got trashed in the fight with the X-Men, Northstar had to carry Havok to the Triskelion, which is entirely surrounded by water. But just as they were about to run over the water, they had to face the Ultimates and what was left of the X-Men. After Jean-Paul tricked Iceman in icing Captain America, the X-Men and the Ultimates started to fight amongst themselves. Although Jean-Paul tried to convince Colossus to help them, Havok decided to end it quickly and defeated Colossus and the rest of the Ultimates. Even though Northstar was getting exhausted, he managed to run, while again carrying Havok, over the water and via the outside walls of the Triskelion up to the rooftop. There they encountered Magneto, who tied Northstar with steal plates. Eventually the X-Men defeated Magneto and Northstar was freed by Shadowcat. (Ultimate X-Men #61-65)
After the events at the Triskelion, Northstar and Colossus kept contact by phone. Eventually Northstar asked Colossus to go to Homecoming with him and Colossus accepted. On their first date, things went wrong when the Brotherhood crashed the party. Upon the arrival of the X-Men, Mastermind tricked the students of the Academy of Tomorrow into believing that the X-Men were the Brotherhood. In the battle that followed, Colossus had to knock Northstar unconscious. After the Brotherhood was defeated, Northstar and Colossus agreed that they had a hell of a first date. (Ultimate X-Men #69-71)
The next time Northstar and Colossus saw eachother in the flesh, was at Charles Xavier’s funeral. (Ultimate X-Men #79)
Northstar has the ability to run very fast. At a track and field invitational at his former school, Jean-Paul was able to run the mile just under three minutes and was listed in the X-Men’s files as a Level Six speedster. The next time the X-Men encountered him, Northstar was able to run a lot faster, but it was never stated how fast exactly, although it was assumed that he could not go faster than lightning.
Northstar is also able to run over water or vertically up the walls of a building, even when carrying someone.
