The Midnighter was part of the covert team created by Henry Bendix under a Stormwatch umbrella. This team was to be his personal black ops team; the group and its members never "existed" to Stormwatch. Only Bendix knew about them. Little is known about the Midnighter. But on his team's first mission, under the leadership of Apollo, the team was almost entirely annihilated. Only Apollo and The Midnighter survived, and spent the next five years in hiding from Bendix as he watched the Earth twenty-four hours a day. When Bendix died, the new Weatherman, Jackson King, discovered their existence. The new Weatherman didn't know what to make of them, stating "We don't know what they want with the Garden, but Bendix considered them rogue. That means they're utter saints or the worst devils you've ever met". Favor the latter." After helping Stormwatch secure the "Garden", the new Weatherman gave Midnighter and Apollo their lives back, and he and Apollo returned to make the world a better place with the Authority. Midnighter rarely talks to anyone in the group except for Apollo, but it seems he is slowly letting down his guard with the others. The Midnighter continues to be the world’s fiercest and most feared fighter, and rarely has he found his equal in a battle.

After the death of the Earth Creator, the Authority turned their sights on global evils to further their mandate of “A Finer World”. With such exploits as taking out dictators and armies, the Authority became world celebrities, loved by the masses but hated by those with power. During this time, Midnighter and the Authority stopped a coup d’etat of every major world capital by an evil genius and his “Marvels”; a rogue Doctor and his plans to unmake creation; and the worst loss the team has suffered, versus Seth and the replacement G-7 Authority. Midnighter was presumed dead after his fight with Seth, but had taken Jenny Quantum underground, biding his time until the chance to strike. Later, Seth inflicted massive injuries on Midnighter, tearing out one of his hearts, and it is not known if his healing abilities would have saved him if the Doctor had not helped.

Over the next year, Midnighter assisted the Authority in taking out a multiverse casino owner who wanted to use Earth as her personal playground for high stakes betting. Earth was also next in line for a worldwide strip mining of all its precious materials from a multi-reality corporation and charismatic cult figure. One of the hardest missions Midnighter had to face was versus Jenny Fractal, Jenny Quantum’s twin sister (who was separated at birth due to the America’s attempt to assassinate Jenny Quantum shortly after their birth). After Jenny Quantum was killed by Jenny Fractal, her spirit was kept in limbo by the Doctor and her predecessor, Jenny Sparks. Midnighter was sent back into the past to assassinate one of the Jenny babies.

With the U.S. government under the control of the Authority, the Midnighter found the daily meetings with politicians and committees increasingly frustrating, and was itching for a good fight. In Philadelphia, Paul Revere and his compatriots, the Sons of Liberty, started a new American Revolution. While the rest of the Authority responded to the crisis in Philadelphia, the Midnighter ended up in a future utopia under his fascist rule. With the help of the future Apollo, he learned that he was responsible for Jack Hawksmoor’s death and had the Engineer stripped of her nanotech and institutionalized. With the help of the future Apollo, Midnighter escaped back to the past to make sure this future would not come to pass, but not without getting a goodbye kiss. Paul Revere continued to hit major cities all over the United States, but after the destruction of the national capital inadvertently caused by Midnighter, he quit the team. He walked out on the team, his husband, and his adopted daughter Jenny Quantum.

Three years since the breakup of the Authority, Midnighter continued to fight for a “Finer World” even if on a much smaller scale. Everything changed when Apollo and a much older Jenny arrived; he learned that Bendix was alive. The Authority reunited to take on Bendix and Rose Tattoo, but Bendix had an ace up his sleeve: Midnighter. Midnighter's mind and body had been infected with nano-bots when he kissed “Apollo” in the future, which turned out to be an elaborate hoax just to break up the Authority. The Midnighter, Rose Tattoo, Bendix, and his revolutionaries delivered crushing blows to the team. However, The Engineer was able break Bendix’s hold on Midnighter, and he finally got the chance of a lifetime -- to square off with his “maker”, Henry Bendix.
