Henry Bendix was the founder of Stormwatch, the United Nations superhuman intervention team. Bendix was also certifiably insane; developing a long-term plan to control and dominate the world, a plan that reached the brink of success.
The following biographical details come partly from information supplied by Bendix himself and may be untrustworthy. Some details are speculative; an attempt to reconcile all the details.
Bendix was born in Mississippi, in America. He was a child of fantastic intellect, developing an ability to contact some of the creatures that lived in other dimensions. The spider-creature told him that he was being prepared for a destiny, but again it’s hard to be certain of the truth of the matter. What is clear is that Bendix was probing into alternate realities a long time before Stormwatch became aware of the Bleed. Bendix killed his first person – his father – when he cheated on his stepmother, taking the first steps before becoming the first Weatherman. Bendix apparently also designed Apollo and Midnighter at this point.
Bendix would eventually develop a method of linking his mind into a tank and numerous other vehicles, taking a role in Team One, along with Jackson King’s father and others. After Team One broke up, Bendix acted as an independent agent for the US, including raiding a Russian bunker. During the mission, he met Rose Tattoo and fell in love with her. Bendix might have given her an island to practice her arts; she left the Changers around that time.
Eventually, Bendix would convince the United Nations Special Security Council to form Stormwatch, a proactive attempt to control the growing number of super-powered beings. Bendix relaxed into his role – at times surrendering the post to Jackson King and Christine Trelane – until the world almost came to an end. As Bendix described it later, Stormwatch had become a political football, fighting on the wrong side.
Under Bendix’s new style of management , Stormwatch was reorganised. Most of the team was summarily fired, only nine would remain on the active list. Bendix treated the new team as his personal enforcers, punishing both Gamorra and America for actions that threatened world peace. Bendix also created a secret team – including Apollo and Midnighter – and simply abandoned them when they failed in their first mission. Apollo and Midnighter went rogue; Bendix hunted for them, but failed to find them.
Bendix claimed that he approached by a parallel version of himself at this point. His double offered him a Carrier in exchange for taking his place in the Stormwatch team. That possible double ended up trying to destroy the Changers and would be forced from Skywatch by Jenny Sparks. Later, Jenny would track him down and kill him while he worked for IO.
The original Bendix went exploring among the multiverse, apparently encountering duplicates of The Authority during his travels. Eventually, he ended up aiding Jackson King to save the universe from the effects of the Authority’s regular shifting through the bleed, apparently vanishing after then. He claimed at the time that his ‘death’ at the hands of Jenny Sparks was the final stage of his leap into ‘imaginary space’, and that he’d tipped Jenny off to his location.
He returned to Earth in the wake of the Authority’s coup against President Patrick Kent and started a complex plan to defeat the Authority and break-up the team. Tricking Midnighter into believing that the Authority was heading for disaster, he succeeded in his aim and slowly infiltrated the hidden framework of the world government. He also located the reincarnation of Rose Tattoo, taking her as his lover.
Unfortunately for Bendix, Jenny Quantum discovered that the Doctor hadn’t died naturally and convinced the remains of the Authority to start hunting for Bendix. Taking the offensive, Bendix teleported onto the carrier, where he began an epic confrontation. After a long and deadly battle, Bendix was apparently killed by the Midnighter.
Bendix apparently has no powers other than his mind, although he showed some powers recently. He is a formidable tactician and strategist. It is possible that he exists still in imaginary space, waiting to launch a second attempt to take the Earth. He may also have cloned himself.
Author’s note: Bendix is such a perfect villain because he is human, a warped version of Lex Luthor. Despite lacking godlike power, Bendix can still defeat people far more powerful than he is, simply by outthinking them. As such, he is the perfect counterpoise to The Authority, providing a worthy substitute for Ben Santini and the anticipated Stormwatch: TA/Authority dual.
