READING ORDER:
House of M #1: With the Scarlet Witch's reality-altering powers and mental instability, Professor X gathers Doctor Strange, the Avengers, and the X-Men to discuss possible solutions. The group is divided between putting her down and finding another resolution. They arrive at the island state of Genosha to face her, only to find that she and her father Magneto are missing. With her telepathy, Emma Frost leads the group to what she believes is the Scarlet Witch. As they scour the abandoned building, all known reality is suddenly altered. Peter Parker wakes up married to Gwen Stacy and with a baby.
House of M #2: In the House of M reality, mutants and superpowered beings are the norm, while "normal" humans are now considered lesser. Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Emma Frost are a married couple. Carol Danvers is the most popular superhero in the world. Alison Blaire (Dazzler) is the host of a popular television talk show. Meanwhile, Luke Cage leads a human underground movement. James Howlett (Wolverine) wakes up to find himself an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in this reality, but with memories of the "real" world.
House of M #3: James Howlett (Wolverine) continues to have lapsing memories of the "real" world, causing him to find the truth behind what has happened. He runs from the custody of S.H.I.E.L.D. to find Professor X at his mansion, only to find a normal family has been living there for years. When a S.H.I.E.L.D. squad attempts to bring him in, the mutant known as Cloak teleports him to meet Luke Cage and his human underground movement.
House of M #4: Sentinels use a tracking device implanted within James Howlett (Wolverine) to find his location and Luke Cage's group. They escape through Cloak. James explains to the group that reality has been altered and that they need to set it straight. Cage introduces James to a girl named Layla Miller who mysteriously remembers the "real" world just as he does. Together, they find Emma Frost and help her remember it too.
House of M #5: With the help of Emma Frost, the mysterious girl named Layla Miller unlocks the memories of various heroes in order to restore their recollection of how reality is supposed to be before it changed. After an intensive meeting, the band of heroes decide to take the fight straight to Lord Magnus and the House of M to end it once and for all.
House of M #6: Emma uses her powers to sneak the heroes onto the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and also to take over its crew at the control room, whom she makes steer the Helicarrier to Genosha to find Xavier. The heroes rest and ponder their moves. Some argue that perhaps switching the world back isn’t their right, while others simply imply that they are happier in this world. Cage and Spider-Man both are dismayed at how the lives of Jessica Jones and Mary Jane have changed without them, but Spider-Man takes his pain harder than Cage. After arguing, Cyclops divides the group into three teams. Emma will take Cloak and Layla to find Xavier and awaken him. Dr. Strange will try to find Wanda and reason with her. The rest will keep the House of M occupied. The Helicarrier reaches Genosha where the gala has started, with guests including Storm, Namor, Genis-Marvell, Black Panther and Dr. Doom. The heroes attack with a Sentinel, and Cyclops blasts Magneto away, leaving Magnus’ fate unknown. As Wanda seemingly collapses, Rogue tries waking up Storm and Namor with the power she has from Layla, but fails. Elsewhere, Emma and her team find the memorial grave of Xavier, crushing Emma, who realizes it is over. However, Cloak inspects the dirt under the grave and finds no body or coffin. It is not over yet.
House of M #7: The heroes fight for all of reality in the palace of the House of M in Genosha. While her comrades fight on, Rogue absorbs the powers of Namor and Genis-Marvell, temporarily becoming a cosmically powered being. Lorna tells Pietro to get Wanda to safety, but Wanda falls to pieces. Pietro attacks the heroes, blaming them for this, but is stopped by Rogue. Strange finds the real Wanda in her tower, playing with her twins and oblivious to the fight outside. He begins to ask her questions and finds that she remembers the old world, though she is still not mentally intact. He raises the possibilities of Wanda creating Layla Miller to gather the heroes, and also of Wanda resurrecting her dead father prior to the House of M world, but Wanda either denies the allegations or doesn’t understand them. She then shows him what happened with a visual memory of hers and Strange finds that, while he and the others gathered to discuss Wanda’s fate, Quicksilver was in Genosha arguing with Magneto, who refused to stop the heroes. Quicksilver then coaxed Wanda into using her powers to take over Xavier and to make the perfect world for them, their father and all her loved ones. Before Strange can find out about Xavier’s location, Hawkeye arrives to kill Wanda, angry at how the person he loved so much could do this. Unable to take his accusations, Wanda seemingly erases him from reality. Meanwhile, Magneto finds Emma, Cloak and Layla, and Layla wakes up Magneto. Knowing the truth, Magneto attacks Quicksilver for doing this and kills his son. Wanda sees this and destroys her tower and resurrects her brother. She then yells at Magneto for ruining their lives by choosing mutants over his children. She then tells him that she gave him mutant supremacy and he is still evil and things still ended badly. Mutants are indeed freaks. To punish her father and to end the fighting for good, Wanda chants three words: No more mutants. The world then burns away in a white light.
House of M #8: The world seemingly returns back to normal, but under the exterior things are horribly wrong. Layla Miller wakes up home and finds things normal, but Spider-Man finds that Mary Jane has no clue what has happened. In fact, few people do remember, as it seems only those who were under the protection of Strange and Emma Frost remember what happened in Genosha. However, even that is not a correct assumption as even Spider-Woman and Nightcrawler do not remember anything. Strange tries to find Wanda, but cannot, and sulks in the misery of failing in preventing his sole duty as master of the mystic arts. Spider-Man demands Strange take the memories of his House of M life away, but Strange cannot and this infuriates Peter. Suddenly, their attention is called to the old Avengers Mansion, where the Avengers find a sign that Hawkeye is alive. Meanwhile, the entire world suddenly realizes that the world’s mutant population has been drastically lowered. The X-Men find most of their students have been de-powered, save for a few, and the team has suffered casualties as well ,as Iceman has also lost his powers. Emma uses Cerebra to scan the world and find that there are barely hundreds of mutants left, when there used to be around a million. She cannot find Xavier or Wanda, the latter being responsible for all of this, but she finds Magnus. The team finds Magneto powerless in Genosha, but even he has no clue where Wanda, Pietro or Xavier are. The team then leaves him in Genosha to live out the rest of his pathetic human life. As the Scarlet Witch starts her new seemingly happy life in an eastern European village, Hank Pym speaks to the world about the drastic ecological changes of the world suddenly losing so many mutants who for years warped energy and controlled the world’s forces. Where has the energy of so many energy-wielding mutants gone? Unbeknownst to the world, however, a massive energy force flares perilously close to the atmosphere in space, seemingly answering Pym’s question.
