In 1916, young Proinsias (pronounced Francis) Cassidy lied about his age to join the army and fight the English in the Irish Uprising. His brother Billy joined him to make sure he lived. Eventually Billy overheard the generals planning a manoeuvre that would kill all the soldiers. Billy grabbed Proinsias and they escaped. They tried to go home but a creature appeared from a swamp and bit Proinsias. Billy shot at it and it ran away but Proinsias sank to the bottom of the swamp. The next day, Billy was gone and he started drifting around Ireland. Cassidy began to discover he was invulnerability against everything except sunlight and didn’t age.

Eventually someone recognised him in a pub and told him he was going to tell Billy. It happened again a few times until Proinsias decided it was time to leave. He travelled to America and started spending his evenings in a bar called McSorley’s. He ditched his ridiculous first name and started permanently calling himself Cassidy. He had a good life with his friends at the bar but had a darker one. He would beat his girlfriends and get them hooked on heroin, while using them to buy drugs for himself. After spending twenty years at McSorley’s, Cassidy left because he knew they’d work out what he was.

After a while, Cassidy travelled to New Orleans and finally met another vampire. Eccarius had read lots of books and watched lots of films about vampires and based himself on classic vampires. He had long blonde hair, wore red contact lenses and spoke in poetry. He also hung out with Les Enfants Du Sang, a cult of blood worshipping gothic wannabees. Cassidy brought him back down to Earth but it turned out he was a murderous fiend. Cassidy nailed him to a church and let him burn in the sun. While in New Orleans, Cassidy met a girl named Dee, who dated him for a while but he lost his temper and punched the side of her head, causing her to lose an eye.

A few years later, Cassidy was in Dallas when Tulip botched her first hit. He helped her escape and eventually ran into Jesse. They got in a bar fight which ended with Cassidy revealing he was a vampire. Jesse was horrified and called Cassidy an abomination. Hurt, Cassidy left them. After a bloody encounter with the Saint of Killers, Cassidy decided to help Jesse. He later drove his truck into the indestructible Saint. After this, Jesse and Cassidy became firm friends.

The next adventure took them to New York. Cassidy met up with his friend Si Coltrane, a reporter heavily into religious phenomena. He was investigating a serial killer called the Reaver-Cleaver. Unfortunately, Si turned out to be the killer and seriously injured Tulip. Cassidy decided to go to San Francisco rather than join Jesse and Tulip. While his friends were in Angelville, Cassidy mourned the death of his girlfriend who he’d known since the sixties. When he next saw Jesse, they went on a vengeance quest to find the people who supplied the heroin, she killed herself with. Unfortunately the Grail agents were looking for Jesse and to save Tulip, Cassidy managed to pass himself off as Jesse. He was taken to France and was instantly found out. He spent the next few days being shot to pieces by a disgruntled Mafia prince. While being shot, God visited him and told him to tell Jesse to stop searching for him. Jesse rescued Cassidy and they went to the top of the Empire State Building. There, Cassidy told Jesse about his vampirism and his journey to America.

Later, Cassidy was drinking in a bar and Tulip met him. He told her he loved and tried to make her leave Jesse. Disgusted, she left him and went back to Jesse. On the road, they met Arseface, who travelled with them for a while. The next quest sent the gang to New Orleans where Cassidy convinced an old friend to help them. Xavier was a voodoo priest and was going to possess Jesse with a snake so he could find out where God was. Unfortunately Les Enfants Du Sang had found Cassidy and were a lot more dangerous. Xavier’s girlfriend was killed and Cassidy was beheaded. Cassidy was reunited with Dee and was horrified to discover that she had been trying to curse him with voodoo.

The gang travelled to Monument Valley where Jesse planned to take a large amount of hallucinogenic drugs. Unfortunately Herr Starr attacked with an army and a nuclear bomb. Cassidy tried to help but was caught in the sun. Eventually they hijacked a plane but Jesse was thrown from it, apparently to his death. Tulip became near catatonic and took lots of tranquillisers with vodka. Cassidy looked after her for a month but gave into temptation and raped her. Over the next six months Cassidy used Tulip as little more than a sex toy.

Eventually Cassidy forgot to give Tulip her drugs and she escaped. She went to stay with Amy and was reunited with Jesse. During this time, Jesse investigated Cassidy’s sordid past. Cassidy spent a month tracking her and encountered Jesse. Jesse told Cassidy to meet him at the Alamo for a final showdown in three months.

Before his showdown, Cassidy made a deal with God. He knew that this was going to be the final battle and made God promise to resurrect Jesse as soon as Genesis left his body. Cassidy also made sure that he would live as well. Cassidy met Jesse at a bar and they had a long talk about his sins. They split up for a few hours before meeting at the Alamo. Jesse started the fight by punching Cassidy’s shades off, revealing strained, veiny eyes. This angered Cassidy and they had a long fight, which Jesse won. The fight lasted until dawn and Cassidy sacrificed himself to the sun. Herr Starr, who had been watching the fight, ordered a sniper to shoot Jesse. Tulip killed him immediately. The next day, Jesse was resurrected but because he had left Tulip behind again, she left. Jesse didn’t resist. However Cassidy had written letters to them that convinced them to get back together. They rode off into the sunset. Cassidy, meanwhile had been reborn as a human. Cured of any aging processes such as his heroin addiction, he was sixteen again. He drove away to a new life.

As a vampire, Cassidy possessed strength and speed on a near super-human level as well as an enhanced sense of smell. He was almost indestructible and the only thing that could kill him was the sun.
