Jake O’Hare was a chauvinist hunter whose wife was pregnant and was looking forward to taking his son hunting and fishing. Deciding to stay in a bar with his buddies than be at his wife’s side, he received a phone call telling him that his wife had died in childbirth and his baby was a girl. Having convinced himself that the baby was going to be a boy, he was shocked but took to her instantly. He started to train in her to use guns and took her on fishing trips. When she was thirteen, Jake took Tulip on a hunting trip to shoot deer but he was accidentally shot while relieving himself. For many years Tulip developed a hatred of guns.
Tulip was sent to an expensive boarding school by her aunt where she met her best friend Amy Grinderbinder. When they went to a frat party, Amy was almost raped but Tulip saved her using a gun. After Amy’s dad died, they travelled across America until Tulip met Jesse Custer. Operating as a trio, they made their living stealing cars. Eventually Jesse was tracked down by his family and abducted. Thinking he left her, Tulip spent the next few years drinking until she became too ill and spent some time in hospital, borrowing money off a local hood named MacAvoy. Unable to pay the debt, Tulip agreed to repay him by performing hits.
She botched her first hit and escaped by hitching a lift with an Irish punk named Cassidy. Meanwhile Jesse had merged with Genesis and his church was destroyed, eradicating the population of Annville. After investigating, Tulip was reunited with Jesse but wanted to know why he left her. After an adventure involving the Saint of Killers and Sheriff Root, they travelled to New York where Tulip was almost killed by one of Cassidy’s friends who turned out to be a serial killer. He hammered a serrated hunting knife into her hand.
After healing from her injury, she and Jesse went to Dallas to settle the debt with MacAvoy. Before they could do anything Jody appeared and massacred everyone but Jesse and Tulip. He forced them to come with him to Angelville where they were tied up in a basement and Jesse told Tulip why he’d left her. The next morning Jody shot Tulip in the head. However she was brought back to life by God and told to tell Jesse to stop hounding him. While Jesse was killing the Angelville henchmen, Tulip shot T.C. and pushed Miss Marie out of her wheelchair which later caused her to be blown up when her oxygen tanks caught fire. After killing everyone in Angelville, Jesse and Tulip finally kissed.
After spending a few weeks healing in San Francisco they were reunited with Cassidy and got embroiled in his vengeance quest again Jesus DeSade. After infiltrating DeSade’s orgy, Tulip was kidnapped by Herr Starr after he realised she knew Jesse. She was saved when Cassidy claimed to be Jesse but was still taken away by Grail agents. She was rescued by Jesse almost instantly and they travelled to France to rescue Cassidy. After being attacked by Grail agents, Jesse left Tulip in a hotel room because he was worried about her getting hurt. They reunited a few days later in New York. Tulip handcuffed Jesse to a bed and left him there. She met up with Amy and later encountered Cassidy in a bar. He told her he loved her and tried to make her leave Jesse. Disgusted she left him and went back to the hotel, promising Jesse that if he ever left her behind again she‘d leave him forever.
After a dangerous encounter with a vampire cult, the trio travelled to Arizona where Herr Starr was waiting with the United States army. The army had a long battle with the Saint of Killers and Herr Starr dropped a nuclear bomb on him. Before the detonation Tulip had hijacked a plane and was trying to fly to safety. Unfortunately when the EMP hit Jesse was thrown from the plane, apparently to his death.
Catatonic with grief, Tulip eased the pain with Vodka and tranquillisers while being looked after by Cassidy. Cassidy fought off his urges for a month but eventually gave in to temptation and raped her while she was doped up. Jesse tracked them down but when he saw them kissing he felt betrayed and ran away to Salvation. For the next six months Tulip was used as little more than a sex toy until Cassidy forget to give her the pills. She shot him through a door into the sun and escaped. She went to Amy’s apartment and stayed with her before being reunited with Jesse. After a month Cassidy tracked them down and tried to take Tulip back. Cassidy agreed to meet Jesse in a final showdown at the Alamo.
Three months later, all sides converged on the Alamo. Herr Starr was ready to kill Jesse with an army and Tulip planned to fight them with a small arsenal. Fearing for her safety again, Jesse drugged her and left her. After she woke up, she killed almost every Grail soldier including Starr. Jesse was killed but resurrected by God and honouring her promise, Tulip left him. Jesse pursued her on a horse and astonished her by crying for the first time in twenty years. She abandoned her car and joined him on the horse. Together they rode off into the sunset.
Tulip is highly skilled in the use of firearms, having been trained from birth in their use. She’s proficient with most guns but favours a Colt 45 pistol.
