Raised in Maryville, Missouri, Punchy was only a small child when he discovered a buried puppet that granted him superpowers. When he was young, an escapee from an asylum murdered his sister, after whom he dresses the puppet.
As he grew older, his childhood friend Flora Hershfeld told him about the Seminary, where super-powered teens could be trained to become bona fide superheroes. Both sent in applications - Punchy was accepted, Flora was not. Because of his attitude problems and inability to focus in class, Punchy was kept from advancing classes, and forced to take the school year over.
In his make-up year, Punchy befriended his new room-mate, a shy jock called The Duke. He also developed a crush on his classmate Destra, and when he began receiving anonymous, romantic text messages, he believed they were from her.
Punchy later convinced The Duke to accompany him on a forbidden nighttime leave from school, but their plans were foiled when The Duke slept past their meeting point. Furious, Punchy crawled through the ventilation ducts into The Duke’s room and berated him, but upon deciding to leave, both found themselves too tired to even leave the room.
Soon later, Punchy convinced The Duke to confront Destra about the anonymous text messages. Destra refused to reply, but knowing the messages were from her friend Empty Vee, she set up a meeting between Punchy and Vee. Punchy met with Vee in the Seminary library, but upon finding the overweight Vee instead of Destra, he ridiculed the girl and walked out on her.
Later, at the school dance, Punchy met up with his role model, the senior-class prankster Sparky. Before being taken away by Sergeant Stomp, Sparky imparted some mischievous wisdom to Punchy. Taking his advice, Punchy attempted to bribe the custodians into helping him in his rambunctious schemes.
Soon afterwards, Punchy began reading an online journal and deduced that it was one of the Seminary students. As the journal began to reflect suicidal thoughts, Punchy became increasingly worried, and figured that it was the new student, Dead Kid Fred. After Destra publicly mocked Fred, Punchy interfered and began questioning Destra’s attitude. The Duke forced them apart before Destra could attack Punchy with her explosive fingernails.
Still concerned about Fred, Punchy eventually attempted to confront him, only to catch Fred in the midst of a suicide attempt. Fred soon left the school, leaving Punchy slightly distraught and even more confused.
Punchy, Destra, The Duke and Vee soon joined together to discover what happened when Sykes’ nullifier was shut off. As soon as his shield was down, all the students and teachers in the Seminary became locked in a type of psychodrama, where they began hallucinating macabre scenes. Some of these incidents were from Sykes’ past, and others were surreal.
Punchy visited a moment from Sykes’ past, where Sykes’ Uncle Alvin attempted to molest him. Punchy, reduced to a child and taking Sykes’ place, struggled against Alvin, and as he struggled he revealed that he’d secretly wanted Fred to commit suicide, so as to serve as a tragic, heroic backstory. While he was trying to get free, a yeti-like creature ran into the room and bashed Alvin’s head in, warning Punchy with two words: “Evil inside”.
In the real world, Kefong, the only person not affected, turned Sykes’ nullifier back on, and the Seminary students and staff returned to normal. Only Punchy, Destra, The Duke, Vee and Kefong recalled what they had seen.
As the school year ended, Punchy attempted to talk to the mute Sykes, but received no response. Punchy said his goodbyes to his friend The Duke, and left for Maryville again.
There, he met up with Flora again. Both teens ran off into the forest and had sex in the woods before two hillbilly neighbours, Jeb and Dew, interrupted them. Enraged at being caught, Flora bound Jeb and threatened to kill him. Punchy interfered, convincing Flora to let them go. After they'd left the intruders behind, Punchy offered to help sneak Flora into the Seminary.
Wandering home, he came across Destra, who had an unusual offer for him - she wished to discover what was in the Seminary's food. Punchy, still infatuated with her, agreed. After visiting one of her associates, who could give them the composition of the food but no valuable information, Destra and Punchy broke into the Devonshire company and attempted to get the information there. They were attacked by Sparky, and while they escaped with their lives, they did not retrieve any information.
Punchy soon returned to the Seminary, where he and Destra employe dthe aid of Kefong.
Punchy's powers come from his glove puppet. The puppet enables him to generate immense ammounts of concussive force as a glove shaped projectile. Punchy is also a relatively skilled athlete thanks to his continued years at the Seminary. His main skill is his immense level of mischief and cunning. Punchy is also very talented at persuasion.
