How come my post count keeps going down? I know I had about 380-something and now it's down to 340-something. What gives??

Some of the mods have been deleting old threads, for the sake of housekeeping. Everybody's post counts go down as a result.

Oh OK, at least I know I'm not crazy. I was just looking forward to breaking the 400 mark and it felt as if someone pulled the rug out from under me. :hmmm:

It's the same reason. Posts get trimmed if they're in dead threads or are redundant.

Doesn't really matter anymore if some of the older threads are deleted. Back in the day it mattered since most members wanted to have high post counts to earn points for various stuff such as avatars (thats how I got mine), midi files on our profiles, etc.

If all my posts were still here I would have around 5,000.

It shouldn’t be about post count anyway folks. You shouldn’t post something unless you have something to contribute to a discussion. Post that are only one word (like “yeah” or “cool”) or contain one smilie, aren’t really acceptable. Why? Because it’s pointless and it’s looked at as being used only to boost post count. And we don’t really fancy that around here. Also, if a poster double or multi-posts, we edit the posts into one. That will (obviously) make post counts go down.

So only post when you have something to add. We know you all have good things to contribute – you’re comic book fans! So we know you’ve got opinions on everything from old storylines to how your favorite character is being written in a current title. And it’s much more fun to read an interesting opinion, idea or topic than to read a bunch of posts that only have one word in them.

BTW - not saying any of you guys have done that... just using an example.

You know, if you join the resources staff and post new bios and summaries those posts don't get deleted.

Plus there's a good chance you get the awesome "librarian" written under your name. Not many posters have that.

Although what do I know, I never paid much interest to my post account.

Yeah Dev, join us on Resources! You read the Authority, right? We could always use some of those bios. :)

And if you don't want to be 'Librarian', you can get a custom user title if you wish. ;)

Awww guys, I'm flattered ....... :chin: Hmmm I do love the Authority... And it would be cool having my own user title thingy!!

Say I did decide to join you lot in recourses who do I have to get friendly with, and what does it involve!! I wouldn't want to waste people's time by saying yes and then not being able to do what is required of me.

There's a thread in this subforum somewhere...for the most information on it if you're interested in categorizing the Authority especially, ask Jon.

The minimum for biographies is about 1-2 bios a month, but more are always welcome, and it's pretty lenient. I'm not sure about issue logs, I think you should ask Janne about that. :)

Devant, if you're interested in contributing to the Resources department, then i'd speak to Jon (Hancock). He's the editor of the Resources department. So any interest, or indeed submissions, would need to go through him. :)

I think a few series does just fine and when you get used to it you can add more stuff there. Or do an occasional back series summary. I do about half a dozen on-goings regularly now.

When I started I didn't know how to add the cover images or anything but Al and Jon helped me a lot then and I still learn something new almost daily. Dayton's a big help and we do a lot of team work with everything so you wouldn't have to worry about doing stuff alone. I think that I have improved drastically myself in the past few months since I started.

But the truth is that there aren't enough resourcists at the moment, at least in the Marvel department and I believe the situation is the same in other departments.

I'm only a biographer. I'm working on cataloguing the Intimates now. :) :punchy:

I needed Jon to hold my hand for the first several of my bios! Devant, if you join, don't worry. Everyone's very good about helping other people with their bios/summaries and the like. :D

I think I'm the only one covering Wildstorm. We're very understaffed there.

Magic Rabbit...dare I ask...I completely understand and agree with your point about not posting simply to increase counts...but what exactly are post counts for now-a-days?

If you think I'm chatty online, you'd probably lose your mind in a conversation with me in real life. :P

Hardly. Your post count really doesn't matter in the slightest. Surely it's better to make contributions with decent posts as opposed to having a steadily increasing number next to your name?

Lame? Uh, okay. I would think however, that it would be common sense to understand that if you posted 10 times in a thread that has been inactive for 6 weeks, and said thread was deleted due to lack of activity, those 10 posts would go the way of the thread – into oblivion. However there is a timeframe to consider: accumulation of posts is established after specific time periods. This takes quite some time – anywhere from months to years. After all, this is a free site, so there isn’t any ornate visitor database set up and the only ID marker used here are cookies.

Magic Rabbit...dare I ask...I completely understand and agree with your point about not posting simply to increase counts...but what exactly are post counts for now-a-days?

At the moment, post counts only go towards title changes: Metahuman, Mutant, Newtype, etc. At some point it the CXF store may come back into play (they whole points system where you could buy perks like custom title changes, custom avatars, larger PM space, and so forth). But I don’t know when/if that’s going to come around again. So when Steve says your post count really has no meaning, at present this is very, very true. That may change if we get the store back, but we may never get the store back. So for now, we should all just look at post count as simply a number under your avatar nothing more.
