Brand Spankin' New Avatars Thread (Read 1st post before requests)

Yay! New, bigger, better avatars! Before you make a request, please read the following:

We reserve the right to accept or deny any requests from our sole discretion.

Limited numbers. Because they're now bigger, we are keeping our server space and bandwidth in mind. The avatar selection is not a character gallery, and we don't need every single character created in comic books in there. Therefore, we will be more selective in determining which characters get avatars and which don't. The more obscure the character you request in the bigger picture of things, the smaller the chance we will make one.

Functionality. Please do not request an avatar of a character just because you like the character and think s/he/it deserves one. Again, we are not building a gallery. Only request an avatar if you are going to use it. We will monitor. If you don't use what you request, not only will we delete the avatar, but your future requests may not be taken seriously.

Other media characters. Because many characters overlap between the comic book medium and others, we need to limit eligibility. Characters who originated in comics may have any media version for avatars (e.g. Batman, X-Men, Road to Perdition, Men in Black, etc.), while characters who were on TV/movies first will only get their comic counterparts for avatars (e.g. no TV Buffy/Angel, no movie Star Wars, etc.). Otherwise, the numbers will become too unwieldy.

No doubles. We will not add new, second avatars for characters who already have one available. One exception is significantly different states of characters -- e.g. Phoenix & Dark Phoenix, Goku & Super Goku, etc.

However, feel free to recommend updated images for existing characters' avatars.

Provide images. Although we don't require it, providing potential images for your requested avatars may speed up the avatar making process.

Old 50x50 custom avatars. You are more than welcome to keep your old custom avatars if you "earned" them with the old points system store or if you are a former staff member. However, we will not upgrade your custom avatars to the new 75x75 size just because you have a custom avatar. It is not a lifetime pass for custom avatars, and more importantly, it would be unfair for the posters who didn't have time or weren't around to build the points for custom avatars on the old system. If you want a 75x75 avatar, please select one from the available selection.

Alternatively, you may consider applying for staff (http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/showthread.php?t=31019), where you can upload custom avatars to whatever you want, as often as you want, for as long as you remain on staff.

Above all, please be patient. Avatars are an aesthetic and therefore not high on our priority work schedule. The corresponding staff will tend to your requests when they have free time away from more pressing work, so we kindly ask that you be patient with your requests.

My only complaint is that there either isn't a Madrox avatar anymore or he's impossible to find. I kinda like using it since, you know, my name is DigsyMadrox. I'm fine with using the ol' Nightcrawler if Madrox is too borderline right now, just thought I'd bring that up.

Thank you very much for letting me keep my custom "X-Men Evolution" Xavier avatar. The new "Ultimate Xavier" is nicer than the old, but the new 616 Xavier is UGLIER than the old. I know they're more recent pictures, but I don't understand updating to an UGLY picture. Most of the other X-Men avatars I saw seemed nice enough, but the Juggernaut one made him look like a homicidal maniac.

The 616 Magneto avatar is great, though!

Those are the three characters who make me want to buy back issues and current issues of comics I don't normally get. One out of three isn't good.

I like the new sizes, but certain choices are a bit strange- like thirteen Pokemon avatars!?!? They are cute ('specially the Charmander one, aaaw) but I've never seen a single person with a Pokemon one before....perhaps 12 of them could go to more Inhumans / Ex Machina / Supreme Power / Powers etc instead hmm.

I particularly like the Vertigo ones - I'm undecided on whether to go bigger or stay with my more personal faves.

i liked the points system so that you could do all sorts of stuff like change your name and status and get custom avatars.

you can't really have everyone uploading custom avatars as soon as they start, it'll just cause too much trouble, i think there needs to be that points system or something like it.

I think that once a person gets to a certain number of posts (100, or 500, or 1000, or 2000) that they can upload their own custom avatars themselves, or link the avatar to an external storage site like Zonzorp suggested (maybe there should be a small waiting period so that mods can approve of the custom avatar uploaded)

but i don't think that comixfan staff should be the only ones to have custom avatars, some members like myself have been here longer or posted many more times than some moderators.
and having a tiny custom avatar now where most people have big avatars seems somehow demeaning, i want to have a 75x75 custom avatar. I've already made it...

there should be a petition to do that, but with something like the points/posting status system in mind.

While I love the larger avatars, I would like a slightly larger variety. Be that from off-site linking or custom avatar uploading is not an issue with me. And had I the choice, I'd return to 50x50 with my old Bella Donna avatar. However! The larger avatars are much more clear and aesthetically pleasing, if not as fangirl/boyish as the larger variety avatars.

So I suppose I'm torn.

On a side note, I'm not a huge fan of the current Juggernaut avatar. Is it possible to get either of these instead (already sized, like the previous Black Tom avatar)?

Apparently, it does increase loading time...or suck up bandwidth here...or something, I'm not a tech person. I wanted to remote-link to an avatar just over 20 Kb, and even I can't do that.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but staff members put in a lot of work for free, hence a few perks like having a custom avatar. I agree that having a store points system would be nice, but I have no authority to re-start something like that, merely suggest it. We've talked about it.

If you really want the store system back, let Eric know. He's the only one who can implement those hacks. However, I'm not certain if this latest vB we upgraded to has one developed for it yet.

It's likely that not every request will be granted, but I'm still going through them and pondering all of them :) And keep in mind what Al said about avatars/requests that don't get used.

But remember: we're not adding ones just because people like the character, we're adding ones people actually use -- because these have larger file sizes and we can't have the big collection we used to. So which would you rather have for now?

I'm going to use the Madrox one,definitely, I just made the Wolfsbane ones for others who might want to use them.

Alright I would like to request a Lifeguard avatar. She had been my avatar for sometime before the change, and I love the character. I know she's B-list but she will be appearing in X-Men Then End so she will be returning to comics

I think I tend to like more abstract avatars, like Gambit's cards or a close-up of Psylocke that look cool but don't actually convey the character clearly...which is a problem for avatars. D'oh.

I'm all for using a pic from the "Madrox" series, since that's the coolest he's ever looked, but I think that unless there are, well, multiples of him in the pic, he looks like a regular dude. But I just want a Madrox avatar and I'll know it's him, so whatever is fine by me.

I don't mind swapping them, because plenty of people have complained and gotten what they wanted :LOL: I can even make the avatar if you get me the cover/scan of what you want (post the URL or email it to me -- rook1@sympatico.ca).

The actual avatar can't be larger than 75x75 pixels (and 19.5 Kb, but a single-frame avatar won't be that large).

Hey guys and gals, Yeah as Devant predicted i do like the first Magma avartar the best :D, i'm a big Josh Middleton fan, and i have used that avatar before on this site. It is hard finding decent head shots of her, hopefully she will turn up as a regular in a title soon so theres more to choose from, and the picture will resemble her better :).

Oh no I wanted to use the Magma avatar, I love Amara and it's such a pretty avatar. But I guess if do then the Lifeguard one is gone :( Although I think the user Lifeguard is using it as well.

I just did a check and yes that user is using the Lifeguard avatar so Heather is safe for now. I don't want to lose the Magma avatar so I will use her now.

But with the new system someone requests an avatar and if it's ok by the mods it gets put up. I was the only one with the Lifeguard avatar for a while. Most people make them. It's just taking a pic, cropping a portion of it, and then resizing it to 75x75.

I quite like the pic of her at the end of the last issue when she stand on the desk….If anyone can help me out :D...Or at least suggest some sites where i can copy paste it from………..Please :D

I've seen this. It's probably to make the list more tidy. I've got the Midnighter right now but if I went on to the Authority folder, Midnighter wouldn't be there. Same thing with all of the others.

The avatar disappears from the listing, but it's still there under "your current avatar." If you select another avatar, your former one will reappear under its proper listing.
