Hey, a new book being reviewed right here on ComiX-Fan! I know that only about 26 people in the whole world seem to read this book, but I figured we might as well honor it by putting out a review for it. So, the story so far: The HERO Dial Device, once in the posession of Robbie Reed, has been bounding around the DC Universe for a while now, finding its way to various owners, giving them superhuman powers, which can be very shocking, exciting, or comical (as in the previous arc, when blue collar construction guy Joe ended up as Electro-Lass.) The point is, the series is very versatile. One of these people is Jerry, who Robbie Reed has sought out, in order to safe guard the Dial against those who might be granted unusually great powers, and use them for evil instead of good. After all, just because you're given a new body and powers, it doesn't change your personality.

So Jerry and Robbie, in an interesting twist, reveal that those who use the device can retain access to their powers, if they are forced to. Which is good, because they wind up fighting the uber-powerful psycho in this issue, and boy is he powerful. Perhaps the greatest thing about the fight scene in this issue is that, unlike most superhero stories, the writer can invent powers as he goes along, so there's that element of surprise. The end of the issue is quite impressive. It's one of those really great moments where the hero uses his wits to really stick it to the bad guy, who otherwise obviously overpowered him. I think there's a Bible story that relates to, but I'm not going to offend anyone's religions by pointing it out. The point is, the ending of the issue is slam-bang good. And obviously, it leads into the next one very well.

There's also a bizarre cameo by Future Boy, the persona Reed used many years ago (and whose powers' residue has allowed him to undertake this mission,) which leaves Reed somewhat confused, and me, too. Will this play up more heavily in future issues? Or was it just a one-note gag about time travel? I guess only Pfeifer knows for sure.

The art is by Dale Eaglesham, whose work I didn't much appreciate on Green Lantern, but is much more impressive here. Perhaps it's the subject material, but each page is very busy with action and drama so it's hard not to really get caught up in it. This makes a very good issue, well drawn. It's also very brutal.

This book is one that everybody should try out. I know this magazine doesn't get a lot of credibility with Internet circles, but Wizard crowned it Book of the Year, or something, which at least tells you something about its quality. It is that rare mix of great premise, interesting characters, and the ability to surprise you that can really make a breakout book. Exiles had it, once upon a time, and this book definitely has that dynamic synergy that should produce a loyal readership.

I had heard about this book once it got retooled and I haven't dropped it since, it's a very cool look at the HERO device especially now that you could acess the powers you once had but for how long?
