Purpose: To gain better control of their powers and to become the next generation of X-Men.
First Appearance: Generation Next #1
Known Members: Know-It-All
Known Former Members: Colossus (leader), Shadowcat, Chamber, Husk, Skin, Vincente, Mondo
Known Bases of Operations: Rocky Mountains
Known Allies: X-Men, Illyana Rasputin
Major Enemies: Sugar Man, Mikhail Rasputin, formerly Quietus
Profile: In an altered world where North America is ruled by the mutant despot Apocalypse, the X-Men would oppose his reign. As the X-Men fought against this tyranny, their leader Magneto had Colossus and Shadowcat recruit and train what young mutants they could find. From an old castle in the Rocky Mountains, these new mutants, dubbed Generation Next, were taught rigorously in life-and-death scenarios. These sessions would come dangerously close to the real thing and were timed by the mutant called Know-It-All. These young mutants used their abilities to help the X-Men in the war against Apocalypse, and fought his rule to the very end.
History: Some time before their final mission, Colossus, Shadowcat and Skin of Generation Next rescued the mutant Chamber from the Horsemen Mikhail Rasputin and his soldiers that resembled the altered human Mangle. Later on, in a training session, Generation Next was visited by Magneto. He had Know-It-All hack in Apocalypse's database and list any mutants capable of time-travel. The only one they found that wasn't dead or missing was Colossus's sister Illyana Rasputin, whom he though had died years ago. Magneto had Generation Next go to the Seattle Core, where Illyana was being held, and free her.
To break into the Seattle Core, Generation Next would spilt into four groups. Chamber and Skin posed as workers, Husk and Vincente were disguised as the chief administrator Quietus, Mondo would merge through the structures, and their teachers entered through the rear entrance. Know-It-All kept in touch telepathically and would inform them of each other's current status. Mondo soon found Illyana, but at the same time, the other students were caught by the Sugar Man. Colossus and Shadowcat intervened, but were too late to stop the Sugar Man from murdering Mondo and mortally wounding Vincente. Generation Next then tried to find a way out, as a riot erupted between the prisoners and the mutant guards. Colossus and Shadowcat managed to escape with Illyana, but the rest of Generation Next were killed in the ensuing bloodshed.
Reaching the X-Men's base in Westchester, the remains of Generation Next regrouped with the X-Men and other corresponding teams. From there they made one final assault on Apocalypse's citadel. Colossus questioned Magneto's plan to restore the preceding reality, and how it could endanger his sister. Minutes before their timeline was replaced, Shadowcat was killed when Colossus went into a frenzy and jeopardized the mission. Following Shadowcat's death, she was avenged by Gambit, who took Colossus's life.
