In the time where the Sentinels came to power, Magneto, the former ruler of Genosha, was the most wanted fugitive on the planet. While on the run, he learned of the Hellfire Club's plan to use a machine called the Cataclysm Engine to take the world for themselves. He also discovered that they plan to use his daughter, the Scarlet Witch's powers as its fuel source.
Knowing that he needed help to stop the Hellfire Club's intentions, Magneto sought out Wolverine and any X-Men that weren't killed or captured by the Sentinels. When he found Jubilee's group, she helped him find Wolverine in Moscow and in a feral state of mind. They took Wolverine to Emma Frost to be helped, but she wouldn't comply until Magneto himself asked her to. With Wolverine recovered, Magneto and the X-Men staged an assault on the Hoover Dam, where the Cataclysm Engine was located. After the engine was destroyed and the Scarlet Witch freed, Magneto went after the Hellfire Club's Black King, Shinobi Shaw. Magneto killed Shinobi despite his intangibility, then a piece of the dam fell on Magneto and crushed his legs.
Regardless of losing the use of his legs, Magneto accommodated his daughter's dying wish to let go of his bitter past and help the X-Men against the Sentinels. He would later be captured by the mutant-hunting behemoths and put in a camp along with the X-Men who were already there. Along with the captive X-Men, Magneto worked on a plan for Kate Pryde's consciousness to go back in time to her younger self and change the events that resulted in the world they live in. Following that plan, the X-Men set out to escape from the Sentinels and destroy their headquarters, the Baxter Building. Since he was confined to a wheelchair, Magneto stayed behind and sacrificed his life to cover the X-Men's escape.
