Hyve's origin and purpose remain a mystery. The insects are totally non-communicative and have no single dominant consciousness. Hyve simply follows the new Brotherhood that is led by the former X-Men leader Cyclops and reacts instinctively. When Cyclops attacks the X-Mansion, contact with Plague turns the insects bright white and instantaneously kills the collective. Hyve is unable to withstand the conditions of the dimension which Nightcrawler teleports through.
