Jay rallies the remaining New Mutants to stop the Hellions and Sofia, who are mounting Kevin's rescue from FBI custody. Josh tells Wolfsbane of the goings-on, who refuses to help, but subsequently informs Dani, Emma and Cyclops. The Hellions and New Mutants battle until the faculty arrives, while Evangeline Whedon presents Agent Pierce's findings of accidental death, and gets the charges against Kevin dismissed. Kevin and Jay trade squads, David and Sofia become co-leaders of the New Mutants, and Josh and Rahne rekindle their romance.

In the House of M, there is unbridled peace, or so it seems. At the New Mutants Leadership Institute, headmistress Karma leads graduation when a team of human suicide bombers attacks. The headmistress is unable to deal with the attackers as they are immune to telepathy, and her students attempt to fend them off to no avail, as the majority of them have had no battle training.

Luckily, the Hellions squad of S.H.I.E.L.D. trainees arrives, lead by none other than Danielle Moonstar. They make quick work of the bombers, taking as many as possible into custody, with Moonstar and her team verbally sparring with their NMLI counterparts, before heading back to the heli-carrier. Elsewhere, Prodigy of the Institute and Surge of the Hellions steal a few kisses, and discuss their respective positions.

Later, on the S.H.I.E.L.D. heli-carrier, Agent Moonstar receives new orders care of Mystique, which force Dani to bring in a new member. Illyana Rasputin, a young teleporter called Magik, is introduced to the team to temporarily replace the Surge, whose father is a target of the upcoming mission. Magik gives the doubtful Julian a fright before receiving his vote of confidence, and Surge learns the facts surrounding the team's next outing.

Back at the Institute, Karma offers resident psychologist, Dr. Garrison's, services to any students who were traumatized by the day's attacks, and the kids discuss the likelihood of their participation, with Jubilee and Dust opting for a little 'mall therapy' instead. Surge returns to Prodigy's room at the Institute and explains her situation to her boyfriend, who tries to comfort her, and whose help she wants to beat the Hellions to her father.

Later, Wallflower and Mercury, whom David have asked for assistance, refuse to avoid trouble, but promise to keep the secret. In Tokyo, Japan, the Hellions arrive courtesy of Magik, interrupting an attack on a Project Genesis scientist, and preparing to battle the aggressors. Meanwhile, Laurie apparently tells her father everything about David and Noriko's plans, running into the telpathic Quentin Quire as she leaves his office. Quentin reads Laurie's mind, learning all her secrets and prompting Wallflower to use her pheromone powers to kill him, because, as Laurie explains, "S.H.I.E.L.D. likes its secret agents to be secret..."

The Hellions battle terrorists in Japan, while agents Foley and Ford torture Cameron Hodge of the Human Resistence Movement for information, until Surge comes to his aid. Surge kills the man at his request, as Magik scares information out of the guns-for-hire that leads the Hellions to Emperor Sunfire. Utilizing the information Hodge gave her, Surge has Prodigy research 'Project Genesis,' and, together, they collect a team to check it out. Back at the NMLI, Tag discovers Quentin Quire's body, much to his dismay, as the New Mutants enter the Human Resistence Movement's headquaters in search of Surge's father.
