Quick Rating: Great!
Story Title: ‘Power Play’
“You want to go find something to hit?”
Writer: David Fury
Director: James A. Contner
Cast: David Boreanaz, Alexis Denisof, J. August Richards, Amy Acker, James Marsters, Andy Hallett, and Mercedes McNab.
Guest Starring: Christian Kane, Adam Baldwin, Alec Newman , and Jenny Mollen.
Warning: Some Spoilers Ahead!
’Power Play’ is all about treachery and deception, even from the opening scene you know something isn’t right, not completely anyways.
For an episode about deception it is rather straightforward story wise. As Drogyn (played wonderfully by Alec Newman) returns to search out a most unlikely ally, Spike. What the keeper of the Deeper Well has to tell Angel Inc is not something they want to hear but something a few of them have already noticed. That Angel has gone evil again.
The audience was let in on the deceit before the characters, after all if Angel had truly turned, would he have given Nina the tickets for her, her niece and her sister to get out of town. But did he take it too far? It does appear that Drogyn is dead.
’Power Play’ introduces a secret organization called the Circle of the Black Thornn, a number of whose members we’ve seen before. They look to be the closest thing to the Senior Partners Angel Inc will get too which ties nicely in with the end of the episode.
Another interesting scene is the fight between Hamilton and Illyria as she tries to protect Drogyn from him. The fight did not last long, as Hamilton easily handles the Old One. And it brings up the question, just how powerful is he?
I thought the episode ended at the perfect moment, setting up the next episode and the dire situation the team finds themselves in. It is sure to be an epic ending to one of the best shows on television.
Recently I read an article about shows that were ending this season and the actors on them. When it came to David Boreanaz the one thing noted that stuck in my mind was “Untalented”. It’s true he may not be the best actor to ever appear in the Buffyverse or even on Angel, but when he is on, he is up there with the best. And when he is playing bad, he is real good. Though it may have only been a ruse in ’Power Play David still shines here. It’s all about the look, the attitude, and how he delivers his lines when he is portraying a villain.
I said in my review for last week’s episode that I adored the character of Nina. Jenny Mollen appears in two scenes in this episode and she plays well off of David B, they share chemistry too bad this may be the last time they share the screen together. It’ll be interesting to see if the next episode ends the way I believe it will, for Angel at least.
