Originally she could only generate light when in physical contact with her brother Northstar. However, Dr. Walter Langkowski's molecular restructuring of her body has enabled her to generate light on her own.
In our reality, Aurora was orphaned and seperated from her twin brother Northstar. She attempted suicide by throwing herself from the roof of a building, but instead of falling to her death, she discovered that she could fly at great speed. Years later, she was rescued by Wolverine while being mugged. Recognizing her power, he invited her to meet James Hudson of the Canadian government's Department H who was organizing a team of powerful agents. She accepted, was reunited with her brother, and joined the team Hudson created, Alpha Flight.

Aurora was part of Project Goliath, a mission headed by Wolverine for the capture of the Hulk. However, when Wolverine discovered that everyone on Project Goliath was going to die unless the Exiles intervened, Logan sent Beta through Gamma Flight to Australia to assist the Fantastic Four with the massive relocation of Namor and the Kingdom of Atlantis. The Hulk was eventually beaten by Thunderbird, an alternate version of this reality's Shaman.
