Replacement Ideas for Reload
Rather than dwelling on the impending disappointment that is Reload, I thought we could look at the bright side of things… it could be worse. How could it be worse? Well…
X-MEN RECYCLED. The premise: No new writers, but all the existing writers swap books.
The possibilities:
New Mutants by Peter Milligan. The New Mutants become a techno-pop group called “E-Gene”. They become international symbols of mutant pride… until the tape they lip synch from skips during a performance for Her Majesty the Queen.
Weapon X by Chris Claremont. When Sauron, the winged Weapon X-er, decides to make Storm his bride, it threatens to expose the entire program, and Jackson and company are forced to take him down.
Emma Frost by Chuck Austen. As a young girl, Emma was forced to work in low-budget porn movies to make ends meet. In the present, she finds herself in the hot seat when her raunchy starring role in “Vatican Vixens 9”, where she plays a nymphomaniac nun, falls into the hands of religious groups.
X-MEN RECAST. The premise: All the writers are replaced by television show creators.
The possibilities:
Wolverine by Dick Wolf. Wolverine travels the countryside, avenging those who have been preyed upon and forgotten by society.
X-Statix by Norman Lear. The new owner of the X-Statix, Arnie Shelter, finds himself loved by Middle America (but at odds with the team) when he does an interview and expresses his distaste for “the colored guy, the dead broad, and the fuzzy fairy”.
Wolverine: The Protector by Dick Wolf. Wolverine travels the countryside, standing between cartels and those they would harm.
X-Men by Aaron Spelling. The X-Men hold an intervention to help Scott deal with his Vicodin addiction. Meanwhile, Emma is pregnant… but who’s the father?
Wolverine: The Searcher by Dick Wolf. Wolverine travels the countryside, looking for lost pets.
X-MEN REGURGITATED. The premise: The writers and titles don’t change, but they just “put their own spin” on old classics.
The possibilities:
Uncanny X-Men. On the day of Alex and Annie’s wedding, Annie begins to wonder if Alex is good enough for her. Will she call off the wedding? And who is that mystery man skulking about?
Exiles. Morph has to assemble an all-new team of Exiles when the originals all go missing on a mysterious island.
X-Treme X-Men. Beaten and broken from their recent clash with Bogan, Storm’s team knows they won’t survive the approaching Vargas. With little other choice, Storm leads her team through a mysterious portal to parts unknown…
X-MEN REVIEWED. The premise: Instead of writing more stories, the staff just fills the issues with what they imagine the reviews would have been had they written a story.
The possibilities:
Emma Frost by Karl Bollers. “A fantastic read… and that cover is one of the best pieces of artwork I’ve ever seen.” – Women’s Lib Monthly
X-Statix by Peter Milligan. “I haven’t read it… but I love it!” – Anglophile Society of America
Uncanny X-Men by Chuck Austen. “This is the greatest story in the history of Marvel comics, possibly the history of human civilization! Chuck Austen may be the Messiah himself!” – Joseph Quetzalcoatl, impartial reviewer
X-MEN RENTED. The premise: Every arc contains a guest appearance by characters Marvel rents the rights to for that story only.
The possibilities:
Exiles. The Exiles visit a strange world unlike any they have previously encountered. When the other Exiles are scattered across the globe, Nocturne hires some unusual detectives to help them: the Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Weapon X. Jackson has ordered the mass extermination of the Smurfs… will Chamber be able to smurf them in time?
Wolverine. It’s the battle Canadians everywhere have been waiting for: Wolverine vs. Dudley Do-Right! Who is the mightiest Canuck of them all, eh?
X-MEN REENACTED The premise: The X-Men do their own versions of famous movies.
The possibilities:
Uncanny X-Men. Warren and Paige must navigate their way down an East African river… right through the heart of a Church of Humanity stronghold.
Wolverine. Wolverine struggles to break the stranglehold corrupt union leaders have on the local longshoremen.
Emma Frost. A penniless Emma is forced into the seedy world of teenage prostitution, and finds an unlikely “friend” in a demented cab driver.
So you see, there are worse things than some non-action and a few ill-advised direction changes. And at the end of the day, isn’t just about anything worth living in a world of fifteen X-books?
Well, isn’t it?

That was a good read...But i don't really think Reloaded is a disappointment.Why?
Because we in't even seen if yet.
Sure we've got what we heard and the covers but that's all.Reloaded could BE a genuine hit!
So i can't really judge at the moment...

The Uncanny #444 preview looks stunning.
I am VERY excited about Reload, for every single title on there. Less than thrilled about Austen, but the artwork looks amazing, and I'll be willing to give him another chance (and counting). Other than that one thing though, I'm excited about all of it.

That was a funny article.
BUT--I think "Reload" will be great. Crappy name aside I'm looking forward to it. I couldn't resist looking at the preview of Uncanny #444 either. I thought it was terrific. I think we are all in for a treat.

LOL
While I really like Chris Claremonts writing I find your Weapon X remark great its brilliant and so so true so Chris but Joel was dead wrong.
Emma Frost by - I cna't even write it, its would be so bad - just like your solisitation for it.
LOL very funny and true stuff
However I think ReLoad is actaully pretty good.

Sadly, I became caught up in your opening statement regarding reload to enjoy the article. Chalk it up to my own up tightness I suppose. Though most people that know me wouldn't say I was conservative in most things. Also, Emma's "young girl" porn and "teenage prostitute" stories. Fixated a little too much.
You know, maybe I am being a little over critical. Maybe you caught me on a bad day. However, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I apologize if I lit some people up.

Heh, is the "demented" cab driver Emma meets? Dark Beast?
Still...strangest thing is some of these could occur in the books.

Mar 25, 2004, 05:01 pm
Funny article...but I have to agree with the other posters...we don't really know what Reload is going to be like. Sure, the spandex is back, and the books number in the bazillion range, but they could still be good. I'm willing to reserve judgement until the first arcs of all the books are done...who knows...even Chuck Austen could produce something good...(I'm delusional, aren't I?)
Elder Raven
Mar 25, 2004, 05:19 pm
Zeb Aslam and others check out THE ETERNAL by Chuck Austen. How does this relate many might ask? Well. Many often revile Austen's work and though I did not like what he had to say, I think he said it well. So maybe we should give him a chance on X-Men. Thus my segway.

I have to say I'm with you on this one, Joel!
Sure, as quite a few of you have pointed out, Reload hasn't actually happened yet, so it may seem a bit judgemental to call it a disappointment.
However, given the truly revolutionary changes that occured last time the X-titles were revamped, there's nothing going on here that strikes me as being of any real note. Claremont getting more X-titles: been there, done that. Ditto the costumes. Last time we were given a few new x-titles: Exiles, Weapon X, which are still going strong today. Can you really see some of the new launches making it into double figures? Heck, I'm still not even sure if District X is an ongoing or a limited series!
But yes, there are worse things! I mean, Marvel could cancel Captain Marvel and bring back Liefeld! Ha ha ha ha...wait, what?!

The Exiles meet the Aqua Teen Hunger Force?! That has to be the most brilliant idea I've ever heard!
I imagine the tallus mission would have something to do with destroying a madman named Carl... who after being torn into tiny pieces thanks to Frylock's toilet of death, has begun to absorb surrounding machinery in order to create wild Carl Sentinels!!!
Morrison should totally write Aqua Teen...
Oh, and great article. Indeed, from all indications Reload is looking to be a huge disappointment, but at least my wallet will be happier.

Thanks for the laughs! I'd be hoping that Chamber fails to save the Smurfs and that Harvey Birdman uses the Mighty Power of Attorney to get Weapon X off the hook. ;)
I'm not enthusiastic about the reload because I used to be able to hope to see Prof. X in "New", "Uncanny", "New Mutants", and "Mystique". Now that hope is gone.

lol. i could so see Austen doing an arc like that!
i'm feeling really numb about Reload, but i think any change will be an improvment on Uncanny at the moment.

Strange how if anyone else posts spoof articles like this they're immediately removed, yet we're forced to suffer the reviewer's attempts at 'humor'.
Considering this is spoofing a group of titles not even released yet the whole exercise seems to be pretty pointless.
Still, if it gives you a sense of achievement 'ha ha.'

I'm gonna have to agree with Joel here and say that from what little we've seen of this reload I'm quite disappointed. There's nothing that I really can't wait for. This served it's purpose, while reading this I stopped thinking about how disappointing this reload seems to be and thought about how much worse, although I think some of those would be better, things could be.

I didn't see this article as funny at all. I saw this as a scene out of high school:
One kid teases another kid and all of people with no voice of their own chant for more teasing and clap and laugh.
What IS funny is how all of the people who are saying:
"Oh yeah, Reload is more of Marvel crap and it will be nothing"
MANY (not all) of those people do not even read the X-Titles on the regular.
Prove me wrong!!!
Tell me this:
How many of you pick up New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and X-Treme X-Men right now?
For everyone who doesn't pick them up...why WOULD you have any interest or faith in Reload anyways?!?:insane:

Joel certainly did. I picked up both X-treme and New X-Men regularly. I'm also pretty certain that just about everyone who liked the article does in fact read X-men; as I recognize their names from the general X-men discussion threads.

I dunno, I don't think this Joel fella should take it personally if people don't like his article, he seemed a little defensive. Constructive criticism is what builds a good writer. I don't take it personally. The same right that lets me complain when I feel the comics suck allows you guys to complain when you feel the column sucks. To use a tired phrase, it's all good.
I am kinda curious what I said or did that seemed defensive, though. My one and only response was just me being amused (and confused, truthfully) by the ability of a poster to seem offended at having not found me funny. Dissatisfied or bored or unamused... those reactions I can understand. Offended just flies right by me.

Okay, well. This is a forum, and everybody can post their opinions, so the "no voice of their own" argument falls flat.
Are you suggesting that columnists cant write stuff like this because it's not fair to the viewers who..are not..columnists for the site?
Seriously. I'm trying to grasp that logic. Must be beyond me.
(and if that's the case, Silver Bullet Comic Books, CBR, etc are all in deep trouble for posting their columns. Steven Grant, you're next buddy!!!)

Um, thats a little dismissive methinks. i can have a laugh with the best of em', i just didnt find this article funny at all. it struck me as a glorified "what if" yarn intended to get a few laughs. and while it appealed to some, it didnt raise a smile with me and i said so in my initial contribution. your post seems to suggest that im somehow in the wrong for not liking it?

To tell truth I know for a fact (sicne EVERYONE I KNOW tells me so) that I am THE silliest people out there. But I just don't like people who are not dedicated to the X-Men coming in and trying to dog.
That is like me hearing about a DC event, like the Superman/Batman/Supergirl event, and going on a tangent about how it will not work...yet, I don't SERIOUSLY follow those 3 or 4 titles to even know before I judge.
And of course this is above and beyond you Anthony...after all it is me, just a *edit* *edit* *edit*, after all.
Anyways, I just get sick and tired of internet folks judging without having done the research. And in this case, I do not believe that those who say "Reload will SUCK" have been BUYING EACH ISSUE FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS.

No, I didn't single anyone one out.
I didn't even know that you even replied in this topic, so once again: No.
But, as I have stated I don't see anyone saying:

For the record though...picking up New and X-Treme "regularly" is not picking up each issue;)

Just out of curiosity, how much do we have to have read to qualify as "dedicated to the X-Men"? What does that even mean? Am I not dedicated because I don't read EVERY issue of EVERY title? That's crap.
And if you want my credentials (since I wrote the column), I have read EVERY issue of New X-Men, X-Treme X-Men, Exiles, Weapon X and Wolverine. I read every issue of Uncanny X-Men until the end of the Draco and every issue of X-Statix until the end of Back from the Dead. I read the debut issues of Cable & Deadpool and Alpha Flight (which is all that has come out yet). I have read select issues of New Mutants and Emma Frost, and I read all of Cable/Soldier X, Deadpool/Agent X and the Brotherhood before they were cancelled.
Does any of that make me more or less qualified than anyone else to have an opinion?

For the record though...picking up New and X-Treme "regularly" is not picking up each issue;) Some of us can’t afford to buy comics we don’t enjoy anymore. That’s why I had to drop UXM shortly after Joe Casey left. Beside I’m not helping the sales of books I hate and encouraging Marvel to keep employing writers I don’t like out of some weird “loyalty” to a comic. It’s “loyalty” like that that’s messing up the comics industry.

Leaving the hallowed halls of lurkerdom because of this honestly amusing result of fantastic article written by Joel Phillips.

Well good for you. Luckily for all of us. This is here is X-fan. Previously dedicated to all things X-men, and recently broadening its repertoire to include everything else in comics. Even Sonic the Hedgehog. (which i don't read, but i did love the game and the cartoon.) In other words, we internet people here are bonded by the fact that most of us actually do read all things X-men.

Anyways, I just get sick and tired of internet folks judging without having done the research. And in this case, I do not believe that those who say "Reload will SUCK" have been BUYING EACH ISSUE FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS.
I guess we all have pet peeves about certain things in life. Me, I don't like my roommate playing Britney spears music and dancing to it. And i would complain vehemently about it if he wasn't a 6 ft 200 pd gorilla.
But.
Wow, take a look around.
We're at X-fan. A place in which "internet folk" like Joel post reviews of books they have read.
Let's do some SAT analogies here.
Reviews = Judgement.
Books they have read = Research.
Granted Reload has yet to happen, so judging prematurely would open yourself up to attacks on your pessimism. Personally, though, I trust the staff here at X-fan to render a clear and informed Opinion about what they write about.
I just don't always believe it, since i read enough of the books to form my own opinion. I just happen to not write about it.
P.S. in case anyone wondering, by enough i mean everything. Exiles, Uncanny, New, X-treme, Weapon X, Ultimate. It's probably time i stop, until i get a job, but somethings are like drugs. Ah well.

Is it really realistic to condemn something even before it's begun? Not a single "Reload" issue has come out yet people are already heralding this as a failure? If the "real" world is as jaded as this, then you're welcome to it!
And I'm not kissing Joss' ass. I doubt he even reads this! I was just saying that most of his stuff that I have been exposed to, not only Buffy and Angel, but the amazing Firefly and his own foray into comics, Fray, I have really enjoyed. Therefore I am really looking foward to his take on my favourite franchise.
Whether Buffy or Angel never won any emmys does not change the fact that they were/are some of the best written television out there and it did not stop me enjoying the series at all. I watch things which I'm interested in and enjoy rather than those which will be rewarded by archaic award shows.
Besides, I heard that Welles and Tolkien were too busy to write Astonishing X-men, what with them being dead and all.

But the article was built on the premise that Reload, which as you poointed out is "upcomming", had already disappointed and failed. Some people (myself included) took exception to this negativity. Doesn't invalidate the rest of the article though! Some people didn't find it funny. I did!

Yeah, I think that finding the article not funny is fine and dandy. But Joel's just extending his cynicism about reloads in a satirical fashion. Normally, I don't agree with Joel's columns (no offense, Joel), but the actual article detailing his reload cynicism is well written and worth a read.
I also think it's fine and dandy to let Joel and co. know that his piece wasn't to your taste, but it almost sounds like people are demanding an apology or recantation, or something. But the very nature of satire, I think, is offensive on some level; if I wrote a satirical pessimistic diatribe about the upcoming Star Wars Episode III, I'd expect some feathers to be ruffled.
As for being a "fan," I think part of being a fan is voicing criticism as well as praise. Of course, "IT SUCKS" or something like that ... sucks, but Joel's already detailed his arguments previously in a well written article--this isn't an article, this is satire!

Who's offended or annoyed? Not me, I found the whole article dull and just wonder the point of posting something like this in a prominent position on the opening page as if it's something to get excited about while posts from other people that are genuinely amusing are removed by admin almost as soon as they appear in case someone considers them 'bashing'.
Considering the whole thing is just a case of bashing an entire group of titles that aren't even out yet, I wonder the point. Nope, no-one forced me to read it in its entirety but if you stick a column up there with the important news like you think it's special, don;t complain if someone does read it and then isn't immediately sucked into the joke.
Maybe Joel needs what Marvel comics seem to need at the moment. An editor.

And of course this is above and beyond you Anthony...after all it is me, just a *edit* *edit* *edit*, after all.
Quit it. I asked a serious question, I dont require your snarky response.

Ummm... guess that would be me.
Seriously, Angelophile, I think you're taking this a bit far. You didn't like it, it didn't work for you, you're not feeling the love, we get that. You've said that. It's your right to feel that way, it's your right to say that. We all understand that.
However... your main problem seems to be the fact this was on the front page "with the important news like you think it's special" while "amusing" posts are removed by admins?
Joel is a COLUMNIST. He's a ComiX-Fan staff member who WRITES COLUMNS. And we promote our columns on the front page, just like we do our press releases, news, and reviews. Joel has written, now, 24 installments of this column (and that's not counting his original My Turn piece), and has thus more than earned the right to be a COLUMNIST. His columns are syndicated from here worldwide, all across the web. He's earned his spot here, and he's earned the right to be published on the front page.
You're welcome to not like the column... heck, I don't care if you post repeatedly that you didn't like the column (despite my personal opinion that you're taking it a bit too seriously and missing the farce for what was intended). However, this continual insistence that Joel's column should be deleted as if it were an off-topic post just gets ridiculous.
But seriously, Angelophile, I want to make you an offer (and anybody else who happens to be reading this). If you believe you can do better, or write better, or just have something really cool to say... then do some research, write a few samples, send them to me to begin our rigourous initiation process, and then maybe you (like Joel) can be a columnist, too.
Now, please... enough said about that. Discussion on the column for what it is, for what you wish it was, for whether you liked it or disliked it or want to add to it, please.

Wow.
Since when did comic book fans become so uptight?
I thought the collumn was great. And the whole "premise that the 'Reload' will be disappointing" thing isn't at all what this collumn was about.
It's a cynical look at something that has been done time and again every so often in the x-franchise. I mean, let's look at the 'Reload' for what it is: An overhaul of the franchise to increase readership.
Remember the "New Direction?" What about the X-Men books circa 2000 and on? Or Onslaught? Heck, even X-Men #1 marked a turning point for the whole franchise in terms of looks and stories told.
I think everyone needs to do exactly what Joel has done, and take this whole thing with a grain of salt.

Taking something with a grain of salt is not putting it on blast and making fun of it for the purpose of making people laugh!
But like many have said everyone is MORE than allowed to have their own unique opinion. Joel's is just as good as mine!:)

I don't think so. I personally just said that there wan't a need to start the article on a negative note and then I got personally accused of kissing Joss Wheedon's ass! I couldn't believe it!

"I have been a loyal fan and picked up each isssue of the 3 cores for the past few years."
For the record though...picking up New and X-Treme "regularly" is not picking up each issue;)
omg. ok i just wanna say i do pick up EVERY issue of Uncanny, New, X-treme, Wolverine and Ultimate EVERY month and have done for the last 8 years of my life (with the exception of Ultimate if you wanna be technical about it since it hasn't been running for 8 years). I love the X-Men, thats why i still buy it month in and month out even when the writing in certain books (Uncanny) doesn't interest me at all... but none of this changes the fact that i remain dubious about the reload event.
great column Joel.
