The bizarre character study “Safeword” comes crashing to its conclusion with this issue, and in doing so has impressed me only further. Brian K. Vaughan has more than a couple tricks up his sleeve for this issue, including some candid character flashbacks to the moments intermediate of issues #1 & 2, and allusions to several issues after that. Brian captures the essence of his lead character in words that are very poetic, clever, and touching. It explains the entire bizarre ordeal between Yorick and 711 but doesn’t make light of it, and doesn’t seem implausible.
The art is some of the best I’ve seen in the book. The coloring and ink is used to a highly effective degree here, setting the tone perfectly for evil dungeon pools, flashbacks bathed in melancholy blue, and a moment of epiphany glowing, radiating white/off-white light. A panel representing Yorick’s moment of self-doubt really captures the essence of a man who now realizes that he is alone and isolated from anyone else of his kind, and trying to make the right decision. It’s almost heartbreaking.
Probably the best character issue of the series thus far, we finally get the full story on what Yorick thinks of his situation, what makes him tick, and what some people think of him. We also get the resolution to a subplot crafted with such sinister intention, such underhanded secrecy, that no-one would ever know it had been developing were it not for this issue. Vaughan truly is a master storyteller, and he clearly only surrounds himself who are likewise good.
