Aliases: The Jade Rat
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Dark brown
First Appearance: Way of the Rat #1
Planet of Origin: Han-Jin
Species: Human
Place of Birth: Zhumar
Known Relatives: Old Mother Po Po (adopted mother)
Allegiance: Himself; formerly, the Thieves' Guild
Occupation/Role: Thief
Skills: Proficient in a rough-and-ready street style of Shaolin kung fu, accomplished acrobatic, master thief and criminal
Powers: None
Weapons: Ring of Staffs (ring provides wearer with instant mastery over combat techniques employing the staff); formerly, Book of the Hell of the Hungry Dragons (scroll depicts damned souls devoured by the worms of the afterlife, full abilities unknown), Ring of Blades (ring provides wearer with instant mastery over combat techniques employing blades and edged weapons)
Previously:
Born of uncertain parentage and raised by the Thieves' Guild, Boon Sai Hong was a master criminal and accomplished acrobat. His fighting techniques served him well in street fights and drunken brawls within the city of Zhumar, a walled fortress on the Empire’s frontier, the last outpost of the Empire where civilization and barbarism clashed.
Now:
On one regrettable night in his criminal career, Boon Sai Hong stole two ancient artifacts from an old librarian; the Ring of Staffs, which gave its wearer instant mastery over any staffed weapon, and the Book of the Hell of The Hungry Dragons, a scroll depicting the damned souls devoured by the worms of the afterlife. His true target, the mysterious Phoenix Heart, was nowhere to be found. With the ring, Boon became a martial force to be reckoned with. Boon suffered humiliation at the hands (and feet) of a talking monkey, but still denied the task that fate had handed him. Boon discovered he was a hunted man. He was pursued by Judge X’ain, appointed by the Emperor to be the unquestioned overlord of Zhumar. The Thieves’ Guild also wanted Boon’s head for violating the oath given to their brotherhood to share and share alike. Princess Zheng Mai Lo, daughter of the Emperor, also sought the Ring and the Book and another artifact not stolen by Boon: the fabled Phoenix Heart. As Boon's pursuers closed in on him, the Silken Ghost, a mysterious lady warrior, revealed herself and saved his life. Po Po, the mysterious talking monkey, revealed more of the secrets and significance of the stolen artifacts, stressing to the young thief the importance of not allowing the Ring of Staffs, the Book of Hell, and the still-unrecovered Phoenix Heart to fall into the hands of their many enemies. The Silken Ghost then gave Boon twelve hours to come up with the Phoenix Heart or suffer her wrath. All that became irrelevant when Bhuto Khan began his siege of the city using his hordes of archers and swordsmen, and the biggest cannon in the world, The Mouth of God. Boon searched for the mystical Phoenix Heart, instead stumbling across the Judge's assassins. In trying to escape from them, Boon set in motion a series of events that ended with the destruction of a section of Zhumar’s defensive walls. He then faced the wrath of the barbarian hordes with only Po Po and the Silken Ghost by his side. Boon battled Bhuto Khan single-handed to decide the fate of the city of Zhumar. Bhuto Khan revealed his possession of the fabled Ring of Blades, which provided him mastery over any edged weapons. Despite this, Boon still proved victorious in defeating Bhuto Khan and turning away his warrior horde. In so doing he won the fabled Ring of Blades; a brother to the ring he stole. This new ring brought him mastery over bladed weapons as well as the enmity of the mysterious Silken Ghost, who claimed ownership of the ring. But it won him fame as the hero of Zhumar. [Way of the Rat #1-6]
Boon Sai Hong became an honored guest in the house of Judge X'ain, who kept the young hero entertained with feasts and games of chance. In one of the latter, the Judge won the mysterious Book of the Hell of The Hungry Dragons from a too-clever-by-half Boon. However, such a prize was not enough. The Judge wanted the other sacred objects stolen by Boon even if he had to pry them from the young thief's dead hands. Boon used the Ring of Blades for the first time to devastating effect. But this paled in comparison to the devastation done by the Emperor Dragon, a dragon loosed upon the streets of Zhumar at the hand of Judge X'ain and the Book of the Hell of The Hungry Dragons. The stunt cost Judge X'ain his life. With the help of Princess Zheng, the Silken Ghost, and Po Po, Boon fought the dragon. But one dragon became many, as Boon's attempts to save Zhumar from destruction only served to make matters worse. The city was saved but at the cost of many lives; among them Princess Zheng Mai Lo who was drawn into the scroll wherein lies the Hell of the Hungry Dragons. [Way of the Rat #7-12]
