Jamie Madrox was a mutant with ability to create duplicates of himself upon any form of impact. Madrox was altered by Sinister and the Beast so he could make more duplicates than his natural limit. This alteration left the original Madrox in a crippled emotional state while his duplicates were subverted into the Madri, a religious sect devoted to Apocalypse. The Madri duplicates fought Magneto and the X-Ternals as they broke into Apocalpyse's Stellar observatory. The X-Ternals were able to fight off and defeat the Madri.
When Quicksilver, Banshee and Storm came to rescue the stranger Bishop, Quicksilver and Banshee encounter the original Jamie Madrox. Madrox was hoping that they would killed so they defeat the Madri and end his suffering. Quicksilver saw him as an unwilling participant in helping the Madri and wouldn't kill him. After Quicksilver and Madrox escaped, Madrox willed himself to death, which stopped his duplicates from overwhelming Storm and Bishop.
