Tan will join artist Ron Garney for rotating story arcs on the series.

Recently described by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada as someone who "is going to set comics on fire", Tan told X-Fan that, as a self-confessed long-time X-fan, pencilling and inking Uncanny X-Men is a dream come true.

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0403/uxm_422.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0403/uxm_422t.jpg" align=right alt="Uncanny X-Men #422 preview"></a>"The moment I was told that I might do something for Uncanny I was literally jumping all over the place," Tan said. "It's just so hard to describe the feeling because I've only got just a few books under my belt and Uncanny X-Men is like... the best I can dream of working on! It's my favorite book since I started reading comics."

"But of course, the pressure is overwhelming!" he continued. "I'm a very paranoid person and every day I just keep on worrying about how people will recieve my work and if they are going to like it or not. I know I can't please everyone but I'm really conscious on wanting to please as many as I can and hopefully the majority. I keep on thinking about how people might compare me to past X-artists. Many are my idols. I admire their work tremendously and in a way {they have} inspired me to become a comic artist. But I guess there's nothing I can do about it but do my best and hopefully readers and creators alike will tell me what I need to improve and stuff. Manga influenced me a lot , though I try to be as diverse on my style as I can be so I really hope I can bring a unique feel to the book that will appeal to a wider range of audience. I'm really getting more comfortable on working on Uncanny since my first issue."

Tan's first X-work will actually be seen on a series of covers beginning with April's issue #422. The artist told X-Fan that he was approached by Marvel to do a series of "in-your-face" style images for six covers.

"The covers were done after {Senior X-Men Editor} Mike Marts asked for thumbnails of three characters - Wolverine, Iceman and Archangel - to be used for covers and so I presented around six samples to choose from. Luckily, Mike and the guys liked them all so that all six covers were pushed through. I worked very closely with Mike on stuff as thumbnails for approval and thoughts on everything were exchanged. Mike gave me a lot of room to play with and artists can't ask for anything better than that. They just wanted me to keep in mind that the covers will be 'in-your-face' type, not necessarily story related and just have fun with it. Most of the layouts I did were pretty much just wanting to do stuff that we don't really see much in comic covers nowadays. I have strong influences from Asian and European artists and that, in a way, helps me bring something different from what we usually see."

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0503/UNCANNY_XMEN_423.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0503/UNCANNY_XMEN_423t.jpg" align=right alt="Uncanny X-Men #423 preview"></a>"Brian Haberlin did a wonderful coloring job with the covers as he painstakingly went through all the reference and ideas of the color style that we had in mind and experimenting himself to come up with a cool approach to my artwork. The finished pieces definitely wouldn't look as good as they do right now without the great colors!"

Tan went on to tell X-Fan that he was "speechless" when asked by Marvel to create a new costume for Havok, his favorite X-Men character, and set about creating a look that retained certain elements from the character's classic costume whilst updating it with an anime sci-fi look.

"I was very fortunate enough to be able to design the new costume," Tan beamed. "Havok's probably my favorite X-character with Archangel and Iceman as a close two, and I was totally speechless when asked to redesign it. One thing that came to me was definitely give Havok a much more 'armageddon-capable'- look and have lots of anime sci-fi elements in his look... all that and still retain most of what,in my opinion, the cool elements of his old costume! :) The old costume-inspired stuff was something Marvel wanted me to revise on from three costume proposals I made. It's a mix and came out pretty nice. I'm very proud of it."

The artist gushed when asked what it's like working with writer Chuck Austen, saying that the stories are "wonderful stuff" and that, as still a relative newbie in the industry, he's learning a lot from the experience.

<a href="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0503/uxm_424.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/images/previews/0503/uxm_424t.jpg" align=right alt="Uncanny X-Men #424 preview"></a>"Chuck's writing, in a way, is influencing my storytelling, kinda like guiding me on it and it just keeps on helping me improve! I really hope I can stay on as a team with Chuck on the book for a very long time! (I'll be praying for that day and night! ) and I'm really excited for the next arc! Oh man, the guy's crazy!"

"Philip is great because he can do both action and chillin'," Austen posted recently in his Austen Powers (http://x-mencomics.com/xfan/forums/showthread.php?postid=443512#post443512) discussion forum. "The opening pages of #425 are the sweetest pages I've ever seen on this book. It's a nice, quiet, romantic moment, and then a few pages later, he does some of the coolest action you'll see. Powerful stuff. And you've seen the covers. What's not to love about this guy?"

Tan is scheduled to pencil issues #425-426. The artist for issue #427 has yet to be determined, whilst issue #428 will be the last drawn by outgoing artist Sean Phillips. Tan will then draw the six-part "Draco" story arc from issues #429-434.

i'[m much more receptive to this gentleman's work than Kia's overtly manga work. i'm very happy for the change, actually. and Havok's redesign is spiff.

one itty bitty thing, though. check out Iceman's hand in the three character cover. dude, i didnt know Beast and Bobby had a love child. YEESH... ;)

Not bad !
I think Havoks costume is pretty cool : it's different and the same at the same time . I always loved his black costume and it's still black and I like it . And the art isn't bad and I'm sure it's only going to be better futhermore Tan will be in Uncanny X-Men .

And yes, that is the Havok cover that everyone's been talking about (as it's in the X-Men Encyclopedia which hit bookstores early).

Great work, Philip! Can't wait to see some interior art now!

Deffinately looking good... I love the new Havok design... doesn this mean an X=book is finally going to get a regular artist???? And what about Ron Garney?

We shall see, but for now, suffice to say this looks sweet

Tan seems like an excellent artist judging from his covers. Although, interiors can be a lot different. His style is a nice mix of manga and grit.

I am dropping with the end of 'Dominant Species' though. I will be getting the quarter issue and possibly Tan's first to check it out. Perhaps everything will be better by then considering the wedding.

Great covers!

Haven't read the last few issues of uncanny, is there any reason for Havok's new uniform? For instance to better control his power or something like that?

Anyway, hope the interiors are as strong as the covers.

i'm pissed off.
I think Phil Tans work is great, but why the hell has editorial decided to stick with Asamiyas costumes? I know it's kinda trivial, but i think they're ghastly and that no one else should be forced to draw them ever again.

It appears Tan has some talent for costume design (Havok looks killer, 'cept i think he'd look better without the headgear & cowl. love that he kept the classic feel!)
Why not let Tan have a go at brand new uniforms for the rest of the team? Or at least go back to the uniforms Sean Phillips was doing
The current rags are a joke. What is this..1985 or something? Plus, "superhero' costumes" are definetly "out" nowadays, and i'd like it kept that way.

I agree with Erwin. Tan is very much a manga Lenil Yui, which is great. Looking forward to some coloured interiors and...nightcrawler!

I was squirming at the prospect of seeing Garney again. This is excellent news!

i am usually worried about new artist as it seems to always take a few, if not half a year for them to settle in,(..... or maybe for us to settle to them)
but this guys art is great.

i like the new/old costume. it's how all new costumes should be designed- retaining some of the past but pushing it further, and i think that is how i could also describe chucks run on uncanny, so it can only be a good thing. i feel much more comfortable watching a series evolve than a quick sudden revamp. its more, i dunno, natural.

anyway, cant wait to see the rest.

Superhero costumes are only "out" in New X-Men, which is not the center of the comic world. Having said that, I too would prefer if Kia's costumes took a powder (cept for Northstar - that design rocks). I'm loving Tan's covers, his Havok costume is amazing, and I'd love to see him design costumes for the rest of the team. We probably won't see that happening, though. Que cera, cera.

Well, after looking at Havok's costume, wth the downplayed headgear, I guess the X-Men won't be getting clear cable reception anymore. ;)

All kidding aside, I think the art looks great, and Phillip sounds very enthusiastic, so I'm looking forward to his first issue!

And what happened to Ron Garney taking over?

My guess...Ron Garney is too cartoony, and they relized that the kids are most likely reading Ult. X-men. And that Tan is just a superior artist who probably wasn't available before.

I really hope Asamiya never returns. And he can take his costumes with him.

j/k. although in a sense they really are, as much as we'd hate to admit it.

I'd say superhero costumes are also "out" in the Ultimate line, with the exeption of Spidey.

I understand how many could think that, but i don't believe it's too soon. Those costumes should 'ave never happened in the first place, this wouldn't be so much as a change as a revert.

I've always thought of Asamiyas costumes as uniquely his own, and for some reason I just never thought of them as sticking around afterwards. They're just not X-men, they're Asamiya.

Lets not leave the detriment of his run behind to foul Tans true potential. Drawn by any artist they would still look ridiculous, plus the style just dosn't suit the feel or themes of the book, which is becoming increasingly more 'realistic' and humanized/emotionally driven.

I would have guessed the Havok cover would be for #426, and a more 'Wedding-like'-cover for #425. At this point (and I say this 'cos I don't know how the wedding will go) I don't think the cover suits the story at all.
Normally I don't care much (anymore) for the covers to be related to the stories inside, but this is an exception... it's a wedding issue, a special story, and a special story deserves a special cover.

I'm certainly intrigued by this penciller. A lot of potencial there but I hope he tends more for the european style then the asian style. But what about Ron Garney :bawl: It was a dream come true when I heard he was taking over uncanny and then a couple of issues later this Asamya guy comes out of nowhere and now again there is someone else where he is supposed to be. What gives????

What's happening to Uncanny X-Men lattely? They can't keep a regular artist regular. IMO this is really taking a huge toll in my apreciation of Austen's stories. At least Asamya is gonne. If only the costumes were gonne with him. :sigh:

RE Havok's new costume: It looks really good except for the head piece. I don't remember what that jewel is supposed to help him with but the three "halos" should be gonne.
One of the things that caught my atention about this character when I first saw him was his pitch black costume with a sun shining in his chest. No matter where you saw him from you always saw the sun with it's halos. That was his power signature and it should be back IMO. If not the pitch black costume, at least the sun which is part of his power. I can't wait see how Philip Tan draws his power blasts.

OK, What was wrong with Asamiyas costumes????
I thgouht Husks was a little starnge but aside from that I thought they fit the characters perfectly. They werent too superheroey either.
My favourite Northstar +Nightcrawler costumes to date. Iceman looks coolo too. Its just his previous cotume but with a purple jacket+Xon the shoulder.
I think Angels costume suits him perfectly too. Hes an angel, he loves himself. His first costume he infact did dress up as an angel i thought. It adds a great narcisitic feeling about him.

Havok's new costume really looks good. I love how Tan combined my favorite element's of Havok's 1st and 3rd costumes, especially the glowing shoulderpieces and fingerless gloves. He just looks really badass, as well he should. I hope that Austen is really gonna let Alex show what he's made of. I think Tan's love for the characters really shines through. It's all top notch stuff. I may give Uncanny another try after all.

How about a piece of friggin' stability in the artwork here? The art is just as important as the story in setting up the overall mood for a book. Too much swapping of artists takes away from the feel of it, if you follow me. I like Tan's work here, but how longs he gonna be around. Three issues? Five? That's just not good enough.

They are? Wow, considering how good Jim Lee's Batman is doing you would have never guessed. Sorry but as someone else pointed out they're only "out" in New X-Men. They're still used by most comic companies, they're still used in the Marvel Universe, they're still used in the X-books, they're still used in Uncanny and in X-Treme and to a point they're still used in New X-Men aside from the main cast (and it also appears Wolverine is once again slipping on the spandex again). So, again, how are superhero costumes "out" these days? Now if Chuck Austen was a god he'd parody Morrison's Logan scene and throw a line with Logan slipping on that costume and remarking to Xavier how he cant believe he had him wearing that silly leather jacket (and pants).

Personally, I'm really glad to see Philip on Uncanny. Though their styles were good, Ron and Kia's artwork never connected the stories well with me and my tastes. Hopefully, with Philip's gritty yet at the same time clean art, this will change. And I also really like Havok's redesign. One could only hope and pray for a new design for Archangel, though, IMO. *le sigh*

I am glad Garney is staying on. He is good. The only weakness in the art is that they IMO have not found an inker that complements him. Someone like Dan Green or Scott Koblish go well with him . Thin line inkers make his pencils look somewhat flat.

I think Kia has potential, but he is still kinda rough right now.

now this is what *i* call *good* realistic art. It's impressive and something I can for sure live with. He looks very talented indeed.

Oh and costumes are cool... i figure if you don't like costumes you probably should read comicbooks about superheroes(?) Sure it might look silly on tv but in a comicbook costumes give it the individuality and cool style that I at least like to see. Although no need to get on my case I *do* understand why some people don't like the spandex costumes and the costumes in x-treme and uncanny.... but none the less that's my opinion.

I am truly amazed by Tan`s art. It`s really what this title has been needing. Dynamic, detailed, beautiful. His Havok is THE best design I`v seen for him, he looks pissed off!. Cool!! And his is the cover for ·425 or also known as the wedding issue. Weird!

Can`t wait for Tan.

I`m sorry but Garney should be off this title, `cause WHEN was the last regular issue he drew? AGES AGO!!!!

My guess...Ron Garney is too cartoony, and they relized that the kids are most likely reading Ult. X-men. And that Tan is just a superior artist who probably wasn't available before.

I agree about Garney being cartoony. IMO he would make a great companion to Adam Kubert on Ultimate X-men, and Dave Finch would make a better companion to Tan on Uncanny. That's how I'd do it anyways.

I really hope Asamiya never returns. And he can take his costumes with him.

I didn't really mind Asamiya, but his style didn't fit w/ the X-men IMO. He might be perfectly suited for something else, though. As for his costumes, I like them all except for Archangel's. The loincloth has got to go!

By the way, is Tan designing the new Juggernaut costume or is Asamiya? And has anyone seen what it looks like yet (besides the half-shot of him in the Bachalo-drawn Uncanny #421 cover)?

The covers are great, I can't wait to see what he does on the inside pages. I love Havok's costume, I just hope the "metal" on his arms isn't portrayed too bulky by other artists, as then he'll look cyborgish. Iceman looks so cool, I have a feeling he is going to portray Bobby quite nicely!

Havok's new costume is phenomenal!

if Kia is gone it looks like I can pick up Uncanny and enjoy Chuck's stories again. I love the idea of the stories but the artwork was just too much of a distraction. it really never meshed well in my opinion.

When was it officially mentioned that Kia left?

The new art looks good, but I could do without Havok's skincap. I've always hated that look on him. My favortie design of him would have to be the one he used when he was in the the Brotherhead.

Man, were saying everything Tan wants us to! (Good for the self-esteem, Im sure... ;) )But... it's all so true...

I think I might just have a new favorite artist. Not only is his art great, but he seems to be an awesome person. It's nice to know how comic book writers and artists really feel... being excited about a project is great.

I loved teh way Quesada drew Havok in X-Factor the best.

And does that mean Tan ISN'T the new penciller? They'll still be rotating art chores? Man... that sucks!! LIke I said before... Give us a little stability in the artwork man.

Hopefully, with Philip's gritty yet at the same time clean art, this will change. And I also really like Havok's redesign. One could only hope and pray for a new design for Archangel, though, IMO. *le sigh*

Are you sure about that? As I believe #427 is the Sean Phillips drawn Draco opener.

true. I know for a fact Sean has drawn 427 already, i own art from it (or will shortly) :) Draco is issues 427-433, 427 was originally sheduled as 415 standalone (which set the stage for the Draco arc set to come later) which is why it has been drawn for so long already, but a conflict of sheduling/stories had it forced back to 427, and it was included in the arc itself...

and agreed, i am very happy to see Tan on Uncanny, he has a cool style, i understand he is very good with storytelling, and the covers he's done so fare are great. love his Havok design :)

Appreciated Kia's art but I admit I am not a manga lover. The yugioh/pokemon art is nice, and it was cool to see Kia's version of the xmen, but I thought angel's costume and northstar's and iceman's goggles were a bit much. Kia's style was great but not for uncanny.
IMO Tan's art seems like a better fit for uncanny and I really hope he updates the team's costumes. Havok's looks awesome, and I am hoping he will get rid of Angel's skirt. Even though I prefer the more realistic uniforms a kickass costume is a kickass costume, just look at the Havok cover.

Haven't posted in a looooooooooong while. took this kind of news to make me want to post again. Wow! and definitely great! Good luck to my fellow Filipino on your stint with the X-men. Quite reminds me of Leinil Yu's art, though with a noticeable manga influence. While it doesn't hurt that he's Filipino, he's art is nonetheless very good, and hopefully, more people are drawn to read Uncanny X-men because of his art. Good luck Philip Tan!

A few things:

1) Havok looks MINT.

2) I didn't really hate Kia's work, but it was just too manga for me. Tan's work is undeniably great, and I look forward to everything he does.

3) As for the costumes, for all we know that cover with Archangel is for a Kia issue, so it would make sense to keep the costume the same for both exterior and interior of that issue. No one said Tan wouldn't modify it.

4) I can't wait to see Tan's rendition of Kurt. And how about Chamber (assuming he ever returns)?

5) Lastly, good luck to you Philip, I'm sure you'll do great.

I like manga. I'm disappointed that many of you can't get around your notions that manga is kiddie and all Pokemon. It's unfair to expect Annie to bust out a Poke-ball.
Manga has a kinetic energy that appeals to me. And most manga artists have a different style, but Kia IS one of the bests. I'm sorry to see him go.
Manga has influenced many of the most popular artists today. Anyone who has read Akira can see that the likes of Salvador Larroca, Brian Hitch and Frank Quitley paid some attention to it, and it influences our new friend Mr. Tan here. It's not something you can just ignore and claim that it's "kiddie."
And come on people. Angel's costume was the only one to REALLY change, and as far as I'm concerned, if they remove the loin-cloth, it's fine. Iceman's changed color and gained a shoulder guard. And if you like Havok's so much, you prolly don't have much of a problem with Northstars. Superhero costumes are NOT out. It's really that simple.

All that said, welcome aboard Philip! Your stuff looks good!
His style reminds me NOTHING of Lenil Yu. Not even in the slightest. Know who is reminds me of, especially in the Havok shot? Tom Raney. Like a more detailed Tom Raney.

Good stuff. Look forward to interiors.

When I said that it wasnt because I believe manga is for kids, I said it because his Annie literally looks like one of those nurses on Poke'mon.

This Havok cover has the word X-Fan Avatar written on it.

The new design is perfect, and I prefer the gray tones to the black ones from the old. also the other things Philip put in the costume give him a more modern look , powerful and menacing... And he resembles Bullseye (the comic one of course) in the colors and in the style of the face mask.

no need to talk again about the other covers! Fantasticas!

Arte fantastico, Philip Tan! Looks classy. gotta give you your propers on the new Havok look, and bringing back the "superhero" costume. Im tired of the leather uniform look. I read comic books for the fantasy superhero action and flashy costumes. OLD SCHOOL here. Bring it back, dude. Looking forward to Tan's X-Women depictions. Yeah! Kia was an amazing artist. He is one of japanese finest and I for one will stop buying Uncanny when he leaves. No offense, but he was the reason I started picking up Uncanny. Tan's artwork is great and hopefully people will accept his artwork more than they did Kia's.

As for all this "MANGA" hating going on...I seem to remember a certain Uncanny Artist Joe Mad who had everyone drooling on his run with the X-men...I didnt hear anyone comparing him to pokemon...so do I take offense to people downing Kia...heck yeah hes a damn fine artist and a lot more talented than most of todays artists as well as you guys who post on here... oh and if I hear one more person say "The artwork took away from the story" Ill throw up because that is BS!!!!

Well, as long as you enjoyed his art.

As for all this &quot;MANGA&quot; hating going on.

I'd say it's not about MANGA art in general, just his work on Uncanny.

Well, his art does look exceptional, in a VERY GOOD way. I like art-styles that are, how you're saying, "universal". He seems to use namely anime-approachs, yet with a worldwide blend into something beautiful.

Though, we will have to wait for this wedding. Garney's taking it with #421-424, Phillip Tan with #425 and #426. Sean Phillips will do his final issue for UXM on #427. Then Phillip Tan gets it for this "Draco" saga that's from #428-#434.
