The man known only as Forge was born with the mutant ability to create and understand the workings of machinery. When the mutant Apocalypse rose to power Forge joined forces with the rebel mutant Magneto. At some point in time Forge met with a traveler from the future named Nate Grey. This encounter would alter the course of Forge’s life forever.
Later, using information given to him by the future Nate Grey, Forge, along with his then ally Magneto, made their way to Niagara Falls. It was there that they met with another future version of Nate Grey, who had traveled through time in search of his time’s Sugar Man. Sugar Man was planning on releasing a deadly waterborne plague that would wipe out the Earth’s population. The trio of Forge, Magneto, and the future Nate Grey stormed Sugar Man’s base of operations and were eventually able to drive him back into his own time. Grey returned to his own time, and Forge gained a new ally in the form of Mastermind, who was rescued from Sugar Man’s lab. The cost was small, as Forge’s eye was injured in the battle, forcing him to wear a cybernetic eye from then on.
Years later, using more information from the future Nate Grey, Forge, and the band of saboteurs that he
formed located the present version of young Nate Grey, who had recently escaped from the Horseman
Sinister’s Breeding Pens. Knowing the full potential that Grey could achieve, Forge took the role of father
and mentor to the young mutant. Forge trained Grey in the use of his powers, but was weary of Grey using
his powers to their full extent because he come under the notice of Apocalypse.
Even though his group sabotaged many of Apocalypse’s operations and interests, they posed a traveling
theatre troupe. It was under this guise that they encountered a mysterious nomad named Essex. Essex was
accepted into the group, but Forge was mistrustful of the stranger, particularly with the interest he began
showing in Nate Grey. During an attack on an Apocalypse run factory Essex began ordering Grey to unleash the full extent of his powers, which led to disaster. Angry at Essex’s constant attempts to see Nate reach his full potential Forge had decided to order the nomad to part ways with the troupe. However, before Forge could fully confront Essex the troupe was attacked by a trio of assassins that were under orders by Apocalypse to capture or kill Nate Grey. Battle erupted between the two groups, and Forge was able to eliminate one of the assassins, Grizzly.
With the assassins defeated, Forge once again turned his attention towards Essex. Forge discovered Essex in a farm house that was on the property they were staying on. Much to Forge’s horror, Brute, a fellow troupe member, was slain, at Essex’s hand. Forge attacked Essex, and was quickly and brutally defeated. Suffering mortal wounds, Forge’s dying wish was for Nate Grey to find and join up with Magneto‘s forces.
