The powerful psychic known as Master Zhao was once leader of a team of X-Men who fought during the Corporate Wars. Thought killed in the Los Angeles firestorm, Zhao survived and returned years later to lead a new generation of mutants.
The long Corporate Wars had drained Zhao's energy, and so the mutant Master of the Mindfire secluded himself in a laboratory in an attempt to synthesize a psycho-active amplifier that would restore his power. However, the amplifier caused Zhao to go insane and, believing his X-Men had betrayed him, he killed them all.
Zhao sought to mentally control Xi'an and his team of X-Men, but after Xi'an surrendered to his dark side he fought and eventually mindwiped Zhao.
It was discovered that Zhao had accelerated the development of his latest X-Men's powers to the point where it was killing them, so they were placed into cryogenic stasis by Cerebra of the X-Men 2099.
Zhao's mindless body was later used by Xi'an when the former X-Men leader had joined the sadistic Theater of Pain to power the Mindfire Machine.
