Yes, it is. But the events that led to this can be found in the Legion Quest four-parter in Uncanny X-Men #320, 321 and X-Men #40, 41.

All of the current x-titles of that time were renamed and re-numbered for 4 issues. Like, Uncanny X-Men became Amazing X-Men for 4 issues and they were numbered 1 through 4...(New) X-Men became Astonishing X-Men...Cable became X-Man...X-Factor became Factor X...X-Force became Gambit and the X-Ternals...Wolverine became Weapon X...Generation X became Generation Next...and Excalibur became X-Calibre...and that's it, I think. Oh yeah, and there was X-Men Chronicles which ran 2 issues and had a couple stories of AoA's past. There was also Tales from the Age of Apocalypse that had 2 issues. And X-Universe, which also ran 2 issues and kinda showed what the "heroes" like the FF and the Avengers where up to in the AoA. I'f you're looking for trades, there are a few that collects pretty much every AoA title. Check out "Dawn of the Age of Apocalypse" and "Twilight of the Age of Apocalypse" TPB's.

Actually, I think you have it backwards. Amazing X-Men was (New) X-Men and Astonishing was Uncanny. Not that it makes much difference, except that the Amazing stories came after the Astonishing ones, so the Uncanny team shows up in Amazing #4 talking about the events that happened in Astonishing #4.
