Orphaned as a child, Samuel Guthrie, along with his sisters Paige and Elizabeth, were discovered living in hills of Kentucky by the man named Sinister. Sinister offered the siblings a chance to join the forces of Apocalypse as part of the Elite Mutant Force. Samuel and Elizabeth accepted his offer, but Paige did not.
Samuel and Elizabeth eventually made it into the ranks of the EMF, which meant they were in charge of keeping order in Sinister’s breeding pens. Answering directly to the Havok, the Guthrie siblings were loyal to him, and considered his right hand team.
When Sinister disappeared, apparently betraying Apocalypse, a power struggle began between Havok and his brother Cyclops. Eventually, Havok caught his brother smuggling test subjects out of the pens, and ordered all the EMF to capture him. The Guthrie siblings began tracking Cyclops, who had joined forces with rebel mutant Jean Grey in order to liberate all the pens’ prisoners. The siblings located the rebel mutants, but were forced to fight against the Bedlam Brothers, fellow EMF members that had sided with Cyclops. During the fight, Terry Aaronson used his powers to cause Samuel to collide into the complexes' inner wall, defeating him.
