When the war between man and mutant was in it’s earliest stages, the Summers family attempted to flee to Canada by way of airplane. Their plane was intercepted by a Shi’ar cruiser, and badly damaged. In an attempt to save his two sons, Chris Summers strapped them into the plane’s only parachute and pushed them from the burning aircraft. The boys survived, but the oldest son, Scott, received head injuries during the rough landing. The injuries were not serious, but they would keep Scott from controlling his mutant ability to project concussive optic blasts, which would manifest themselves years later.

Now orphans, Scott and his brother Alex were soon taken in by the Horsemen of Apocalypse named Sinister. In the years to come, Sinister would become a father figure to the boys, and Scott, now using the code name Cyclops, would become his favorite of the two.

The two mutants rose to the rank of Prelate while working in Sinister’s Breeding Pens, and eventually were assigned to enforce security inside the Pens. It was while working in the Pens that Scott met the rebel mutant Jean Grey. Grey had been captured after her team, the rebel X-Men, had been defeated in a battle with Apocalypse’s forces. As a prisoner in the Breeding Pens, Grey soon become the objective of Cyclops’ love, and drove the Prelate to make a desperate decision. Cyclops had decided to free the woman from the Breeding Pens, but unfortunately the X-Man known as Weapon X also had plans of freeing Grey. Weapon X broke into the Pens and fought his way to his captured teammate. Once he had located her they began their escape, but unfortunately they had to go through Cyclops to escape. A battle erupted between the two mutants and when it was over Weapon X had lost his left hand and Cyclops had lost his left eye. Cyclops had been wounded, but Grey was able to escape without Cyclops’ treachery being discovered.

It was shortly after this that the Elite Mutant Force was ordered by Sinister to track down another escapee from the Pens. The EMF quickly was on the escapee’s trail, but many of the squad were injured or killed in the pursuit. Eventually, following the trail of destruction left by the escapee, Cyclops and Havok were able to track him to the Ghost Lands. It was here that the two sibling mutants made a horrifying discovery: the escapee was their own father, Chris Summers. Summers explained to Prelates that both him and their mother had been brought aboard the Shi’ar ship, and subjected to experiment after experiment. Summers then revealed that Katherine Summers died during the experiments, and Chris became affiliated with another group of prisoners. They eventually escaped the Shi’ar’s control and Summers made his way home to Earth.

Now reunited, the Summers’ family was soon forced to deal with another terrible secret. During his time in the Shi’ar cruiser Chris Summer’s had been infected by a parasitic alien known as the Brood. Summers’ was normally able to keep the Brood in check, but he slowly lost control, culminating in him attacking his children. Seeing that his father was beyond help, Cyclops was forced to unleash a deadly optic blast. The Summers’ brothers were forced to deal with the death of the father for a second time, and Havok didn’t take it well. Havok blamed Cyclops for what happened to their father which would become a bone of contention between the two for years to come.

After the experience with his father Cyclops began to realize the depths of despair and degradation that were present in the Pens, and decided to do something about it. Secretly Cyclops began smuggling prisoners out of the pens. Through sophisticated technology and planning, Cyclops was able to keep his identity secret from everyone, including the rescued prisoners. Things were working good until Sinister initiated his own agenda. Sinister betrayed Apocalypse, and went missing, leaving Cyclops in charge of the Pens. Havok saw Cyclops’ promotion as a slight towards himself, and began heavy surveillance on his older brother. During this time Havok learned about his brother’s secret smuggling operation, and formulated a plan to take over the Pens for himself.

Havok captured the rebel Jean Grey and brought her to the Pens. He then ordered Cyclops to execute her in order to prove his loyalty to Apocalypse. When Cyclops refused he to was captured, and the two mutants were to be used as fodder for McCoy’s twisted experiments. The two mutants were able to escape from their captor just in time to learn that Apocalypse ordered the Pens destroyed and all it’s prisoners along with it.

Unable to watch as thousands were slaughtered, Cyclops and his new partner Jean Grey began freeing the prisoners, and led them on an escape from the Pens. During the escape Cyclops and Grey were once again confronted by Havok, and forced into combat. During the battle Cyclops defeated his brother, and the escape was successful.

The mutants would not have long to enjoy their newfound freedom, as Jean Grey soon discovered that the Human High Council had unleashed the full might of their nuclear armament. Grey began using her telekinesis in an attempt to keep the bombs from falling. Unfortunately Havok, who had secretly joined in with the rest of the Pen escapees, unleashed a blast of his power towards Grey, fatally wounding her. Realizing that the bombs would now come crashing down upon them, Cyclops snapped. Preparing to unleash a powerful optic blast, Cyclops was struck down by Havok’s energy blast, which killed the one eyed mutant.
