After a falling-out with his long-time criminal partner Black Tom Cassidy over his relationship with Assistant District Attorney Sachi Yama, the Juggernaut turned himself in and offered to make restitution for his past crimes by assisting the police in capturing super-villains such as the Wrecker.
Cain and Sachi were soon married and conceived a son, Zane. Cain joined the X-Men and on a mission to the "Crossroads Of Infinity", Cain stayed behind to ensure that his teammates returned home. Overwhelmed by an army of Darklings, Cain was taken prisoner by Nemesus who coveted the power of Cyttorak for himself. However, a slight miscalculation sent the power to Cain's son Zane, turning him into the hero known as J2.
The Juggernaut was eventually rescued from Nemesus' clutches by his son, assisted by Doc Magus and the original Defenders. Marko decided to retire, and allow his son to retain the power of Cyttorak as J2.
