Born with the mutant ability to create sonic screams, the Irish mutant Sean Cassidy took the code name Banshee and joined with the rebel mutants named the X-Men. After spending a short time in retirement, Banshee was called back into active duty as the X-Men’s second-in-command.
Banshee was among the X-Men that were sent to Maine in order to assist the Human High Council’s Sentinel Airlift. During the Airlift, the Banshee was to use his sonic scream to scramble the Sentinel’s electronic brains allowing X-Men leader Quicksilver to install a information disc that would allow the X-Men a level of invisibility to the mutant hunting machines. Things did not go as planned however, as the X-Men were attacked by both the Brotherhood and the Madri. After quickly defeating the Brotherhood, Banshee went off in pursuit off the Madri, who were now fleeing the battle.
Banshee arrived at the Madri ship only to discover they had been murdered at the hands of their leader, the newest Horseman of Apocalypse, Abyss. The two mutants engaged in a brief battle at which time Banshee discovered that Abyss was holding a young child hostage inside the void of his body. Wanting to challenge Quicksilver, Abyss ordered Banshee return to the X-Men and retrieve the mutant speedster of he would kill the child. Banshee complied, and returned to the X-Men, who were once again assisting the Sentinel Air Lift.
Upon returning to their Westchester headquarters, the X-Men discovered that their founder Magneto and the time lost mutant Bishop had been captured by Apocalypse. After learning that Bishop, who was instrumental in their plan to undo the Age of Apocalypse, had been taken to the Church of the Madri in Quebec, Banshee, along with Storm and Quicksilver, formulated a plan to recapture him.
Storming the Madri stronghold, Banshee and Quicksilver set out to stop the Madri once and for all, while Storm was to locate and rescue Bishop. Banshee and Quicksilver located the mutant Jamie Madrox, who was forced to use his mutant duplication power to fuel the Madri ranks. As the three mutants prepared for their escape, they were once again attacked by the Horseman named Abyss. It was during this battle that Banshee realized that the X-Men’s plan was more important than any one individual. In order to stop Abyss once and for, Banshee sacrificed himself by plunging into the Horseman’s void of a body, where his sonic screams caused Abyss to explode.
