Purpose: The harvesting of mutant body parts for use in grafting onto humans.
First Appearance: X-Men 2001
Former Members: John Sublime (leader)
Bases of Operations: New York City, New York
Extent of Operations: Asia, United States
Known Associates: Formerly Ao Jun
Major Enemies: X-Men, X-Corporation (Hong Kong), Omega Gang
Profile: John Sublime, the head of the pharmaceutical business Sublime Pharm Solutions, came up with the philosophy that all humans should be mutants. From this idea he founded the Third Species Movement and it's enforcers, the U-Men, who considered themselves to be Homo Perfectus. The duty of the U-Men is to search and abduct mutants, and have them dissected to remove what organs that were the source of their powers grafted onto themselves. The U-Men wear special spacesuits, and breathe only pure oxygen, believing the rest of the world to be tainted and impure, and most of their weapons use scalpels as projectiles. In Hong Kong, the U-Men were planning to build a mutant organ farm from an old Chinese prison, but this operation was thwarted by the X-Men and Domino of the X-Corporation. Later on, the U-Men captured the X-Men Emma Frost and Cyclops and tried to invade the Xavier Institute for its mutant students. The X-Men again defeated the U-Men, and John Sublime was killed during a struggle against Emma Frost. Despite the loss of their founder, the U-Men continue to abduct wayward mutants, and use their body parts to graft unto themselves.
History: In Hong Kong, Asia, the U-Men had an illegal trade operation which involve mutant internal organs. Risque, the head of the X-Corporation in Hong Kong, was seeking information about the operation but was found and murdered by the U-Men. Also around this time, John Sublime, the leader and founder of the U-Men, was purchasing the Feng Tu prison facility from its jailer Ao Jun. The prison was to be made into a mutant organ farm and have its sole prisoner Xorn’s head removed. During their stay in Hong Kong, the U-Men captured a mutant girl that resembled a caterpillar and had her wings removed and grafted on to John Sublime’s back. The X-Men then arrived and with the help of the other X-Corporation member Domino, discovered the U-Men’s intentions in the area. The X-Men attacked and destroyed the prison the U-Men had bought and liberated its sole occupant Xorn. The U-Men’s plans in Hong Kong came to an end. [New X-Men 2001 Annual]
As the presence of the U-Men and the Third Species Movement became public knowledge, it also became an influence on others. This resulted in humans shooting mutants in hopes that they too would become U-Men. When Cyclops and Emma Frost went to see Sublime about this, he used the brain of the disembodied telepath Martha Johansson to render them inert. The U-Men then took them in to be dissected, and at the same time, other U-Men found a young mutant girl named Angel, and were about to remove her wings until Wolverine came and rescued her. Another team of U-Men was then sent to the Xavier Institute to turn it into an organ farm and have its students as “donors”. The U-Men’s plans did not come to be when Phoenix, accompanied by the Institute’s students, defeated the U-Men and forced them to retreat. Cyclops and Emma Frost were able to free themselves from Martha’s control and the U-Men and confronted John Sublime. When Emma Frost held Sublime over the window in his office, Martha used this opportunity of revenge and made Sublime free himself from Emma’s hold and he fell to what appeared to be his death. Despite what appeared, John Sublime did survive and continue to run the U-Men. [New X-Men #118-120]
The U-Men later had a funeral for one of their own, who died of blood poisoning from his lung grafts. During the funeral, when they were going to recycle the body parts of their fallen, the U-Men were attacked by the Omega Gang, a discontent group of mutant students from the Xavier Institute. The Omega Gang slaughtered the U-Men present and tortured the one remaining. Meanwhile there was another group of U-Men, who were spying on a group of students and their teacher Xorn. They then tried to murder the students, but Xorn, who was in fact Magneto, defeated the U-Men quickly and easily. [New X-Men #135-136]
Though still believed to be dead by the X-Men, John Sublime was alive and later became the target of assassination by the covert operations orgainization Weapon X. The new Weapon X agent Chamber was sent to murder Sublime, but was captured by the U-Men. Before they could perform their own experiment on the young mutant, the U-Men were attacked by Wild Child and Sauron, who were running amok and destroying their labs. Chamber was freed and confronted Sublime, and killed the U-Men founder soon after. [Weapon X (2nd series) #17-18]
