Ember was a member of the Undead, a group of reanimated dead mutants in the future of 2099. The Undead were originally thought to be the reanimated corpses of members of the 20th Century X-Men.
It was eventually revealed that the Undead were not the X-Men, but were instead alpha-class mutants from circa 2040, reanimated by the Graverobber who sought revenge on Cerebra's father, Zail Haddad.
