Apocalypse was born nearly five thousand years ago in Egypt as a member of the Akkaba clan. Even as an infant, he inspired fear. Ugly and malformed, he was abandoned by the tribe to die in the harsh desert sun. The baby was found by a roving band of desert nomads whose leader, Baal, recognized the potential power in the child. He named him En Sabah Nur, meaning "The First One", and raised him as his own son. Nur was raised by the nomads, who thought him strong to be able to survive the desert as an child, and enforced the idea that "the strong will survive" - an idea that would shape Apocalypse's actions throughout time.

Apocalypse uses technology developed by the Celestials to "regenerate" for long periods of time, becoming more powerful upon each awakening. It was during one of his regenerating sessions that Apocalypse’s technology detected the battle between the time lost mutant Legion and the young Magneto. Realizing that the Age of Wonder was upon him, Apocalypse began gathering mutants for his army in the upcoming war between mutant and human--a war that he was going to initiate.

Apocalypse made the first move in the war, sending his Horsemen on an attack on the United States’ Cape Citadel missile base. Their goal was to gain control over the base’s nuclear missile cache, which were then to be launched, destroying the weak and forcing the strong to survive. From his Celestial Ship, Apocalypse watched as his Horsemen stormed the base, and began their takeover of the missiles launch controls. Just when victory was in his grasp, the young mutants known as the X-Men arrived, who then challenged the Horsemen. The Horsemen were defeated by the X-Men, and Apocalypse was forced to retreat when Magneto, the X-Men’s leader, damaged the Celestial Ship. Apocalypse had lost the battle, but in the years to come he would win the war, eventually conquering North America.

As absolute ruler of North America Apocalypse engineered culling to systematically decimate the human population, which led to the deaths of millions of humans. Eventually, under threat of nuclear war, Apocalypse signed the Kelly Pact with the Human High Council based in Europe. The Kelly Pact was to end the culling in North America, and Apocalypse apparently brought and end to the culling. In truth however, the culling were only suspended, to later be restarted under the guidance of Apocalypse’s own son Holocaust.

During the culling of the city of Chicago, the X-Men Blink and Sunfire were forced to flee from Apocalypse’s Infinite force. The Infinite Delgado was able to follow the two X-Men through Blink’s portal which led to the X-Men’s headquarters. Delgado was killed when Blink’s portal was closed on him, but not before the location of the X-Men’s headquarters was relayed to Apocalypse. Apocalypse used this information to personally lead an attack on the X-Men’s Westchester headquarters in the hopes that he could crush his enemies once and for all. Encountering both Magneto and the time lost mutant Bishop, Apocalypse was able to defeat them both in unarmed combat. Magneto was brought to Apocalypse’s citadel in order to endure torture at the High Lord’s hands and Bishop was sent to the Madri temple in Quebec in order for the Madri to telepathically learn the mutant’s secrets. It was at this time that Apocalypse learned the nature of Magneto’s plans, which centered around the use of the Nexus of Realities--the M’Kraan Crystal.

Apocalypse’s forces were able to seize the Crystal from Gambit and the X-Ternals, whom Magneto had sent into space to retrieve it. Apocalypse had the Crystal transported to his citadel in order to act as a trap to the lure the X-Men to him, where he could destroy them personally. The X-Men arrived shortly, and were met immediately with Apocalypse’s elite forces. Victory would have been Apocalypse’ had it not been for the timely and unexpected arrival of the telepathic/telekinetic powerhouse Nate Grey. Grey was able to knock Apocalypse off balance enough for Magneto to rejoin his X-Men, in order for them to carry out the final phase of their plan. Apocalypse was not alone however, and Holocaust quickly joined the battle, eventually forcing Grey away from the High Lord.

Seeing the tides of the battle shift in the X-Men’s favor, Apocalypse quickly developed a plan to use the M’Kraan Crystal to escape this reality by entering another one. However, Apocalypse was quickly attacked by the combined powers of both Nate Grey and Magneto. Grey was able to steal the Crystal shard that Apocalypse had been carrying, and was once again forced to fight against the Horseman Holocaust. Apocalypse quickly attempted to take advantage of the situation by attacking Magneto head on. Much to Apocalypse’s surprise Magneto did not fight back. To Apocalypse’s horror he soon learned why, as Magneto used his control over the magnetic spectrum to tear the High Lord apart, ending the Age of Apocalypse.
